When the media stopped covering suicides in the 80s, the wave of suicides decreased!

In the 1980s, there were a string of teen suicides in the United States; some were part of suicide pacts.

The media decided to follow a series of strict guidelines when reporting these suicides so that no other troubled teens would copy the tragic acts.

For example, they did not use the word "suicide" in the headline, they didn't report the method of suicide, and they did not describe it as the act of an otherwise healthy person.

Some believe that the media should follow similar guidelines when reporting on shootings. Considering the number of shootings in recent years, this may not be a bad idea.

The media may want to consider not detailing the method of killing, taking down the killer's social media accounts, not releasing the killer's name right away and giving the victim's loved ones their space.
