Birthday Box for Mom--82 years young
This box is intended to be a present for my mother who will turn 82 on February 3. We will combine a birthday celebration with watching the Superbowl! The box is made from cherry. The top of the box is made from aspen (white), red oak (center six-pointed star), douglas fir and poplar (light brown). The bottom of the box, the bottom of the inset tray, and inside of the lid are lined with goat skin leather. The splines are walnut. The small inset tray is made from cherry. The finish is several layers of amber shellac. I made a small button on the front center of the lid of three pieces, poplar, aspen, and douglas fir, for visual interest. The hinges are brass and mortised into place. The box will hold two decks of playing cards from a specialty photography company. The backs of the two decks will have contrasting images of my mother’s farm which is quite pretty. The decks fit into the inset tray. The bottom section of the box holds dice and small ballpoint pens for keeping score of games played.
