In the 50's, the CIA tried to assassinate Fidel Castro by slipping an exploding cigar into his private supply!

For years, Fidel Castro, ruled over Cuba as it's infamous dictator. Rumors flew about assassination plans by the United States.

In 1967, the Saturday Evening Post reported that one such plot involved giving Castro an exploding cigar. It was a well known fact that Castro loved smoking them.

The article in the Post said that when Castro visited the United Nations in 1966, a CIA officer approached the New York City police chief with the exploding cigar plan.

It was never confirmed as truth or myth though. Some even say the plot was made up by the CIA as an intentionally "silly" decoy.

Creativity : Icebreaker: Last One Standing

Icebreakers are little exercises that help relax tensions and loosen up a formal atmosphere in a meeting where you want to have creative ideas and group participation.

Everyone stands up and one person is chosen to start. This person asks a question like, "If you have a pet dog, sit down." Some people will sit down and some people will remain standing. The person then asks another question and more people sit down. When there is only one person left standing, it becomes his or her turn to lead the game. This is a fun way to get to know people and create a team atmosphere.

Memory : Underused Senses

Our senses of vision and hearing are used far more often than our other senses of taste, touch, and smell. This may be why there are common names for a lack of vision (blindness) and a lack of hearing (deafness), but not for a lack of the others. Humans used to rely on smell more than we do today. We used smells to track animals, navigate the oceans, and to tell if food was spoiled. With grocery stores, GPS devices, and refrigeration, people hardly know how to use their noses anymore.

Try to concentrate on your underused senses from time to time, especially if you want to remember something. The more senses you can bring to bear on the situation, the stronger associations you will create in your mind. Smell in particular has an important role in memory. Sometimes you only need a whiff of a smell to have a flood of old memories rush into your mind. This is because the olfactory system has a direct link to the hippocampus. Try to pay more attention to the smells that are around, it will help keep your mind in shape.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Disjunctive

dis-junc-tive

Neil Armstrong thought he had a 50/50 chance of making it back to Earth!

Neil Armstrong thought he had a 50/50 chance of making it back to Earth!

Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor.

Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong was an officer in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War.

Despite of being a brave man, Armstrong knew that anything could happen on the very first trip to the moon. Armstrong thought his prospects were only 50-50 of making it back to Earth.

And so did Collins, the pilot of Columbia and one of the world's most experienced aviators.

Despite of this prediction, he was able to make back alive and lived a happy and perfectly common life afterwards.

The Romans had a holiday where master and slave were reversed!

The Romans had a holiday where master and slave were reversed!

Today, festivals and holidays are often a time to let loose and suspend social norms. It is obviously not ok to dress like you would at Coachella in the real world. This was also the case in ancient Rome.

Saturnalia was a festival that took place in late December to celebrate the God Saturn. There was a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, a public banquet and lots of partying.

Certain social customs were also reversed. For example, masters provided table service for their slaves. And slaves were able to be disrespectful to their masters and not get in trouble for it.

Gambling was also permitted during this time. Saturnalia is likely the best known Roman holiday and was celebrated into the 4th and 5th century. Considering they fall around the same time of year, it could also have influenced Christmas.

A type of catfish lays its eggs among the eggs of another fish. The catfish babies then eat those eggs!

A type of catfish lays its eggs among the eggs of another fish. The catfish babies then eat those eggs!

Growing your young inside of you until they are ready to be born is tough enough. Ask any pregnant woman.

However, the poor Cichlid fish has a lot more to deal with. The Cuckoo Catfish is a small catfish that lives in Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Like all fish, the cuckoo lays eggs but with a twist.

The cichlid fish also lives in Lake Tanganyika. It lays it's eggs and then keeps them in it's mouth before they are ready to hatch.

The cuckoo fish waits for the cichlid to lay their eggs then hastily swoops in, eats some of the cichlid eggs and lays their own eggs where the cichlid eggs are.

Distressed, the cichlid scoops up both her remaining eggs and the cuckoo eggs in her mouth. The cuckoo eggs will then hatch inside the female cichlid's mouth and eat her eggs before they are released.

Andy Kaufman once took an entire audience into 24 buses and took them out for milk and cookies!

Andy Kaufman once took an entire audience into 24 buses and took them out for milk and cookies!

Andy Kaufman was an actor, entertainer and performance artist. While many thought of his as a comedian, he referred to himself as a "song-and-dance man" and disdained the traditional joke-telling of comedians. Kaufman preferred to play elaborate pranks.

During one of his shows, he had his "grandmother" sit in a chair on the side of the stage. At the end of the show, the "woman" took off her mask and revealed himself to be comedian and actor Robin Williams.

Another time, an elderly woman pretended to die onstage of a heart attack. Wearing a Native American headdress, Kaufman proceeded to "revive" here.

And after one show, Kaufman invited the audience to go out for milk and cookies with him. They piled into 24 buses to do so.

He also told all that were interested to meet him the next morning on the Staten Island Ferry. There, he continued his show.

The British electric grid has to prepare for the power surge of millions of kettles turning on during popular shows!

The British electric grid has to prepare for the power surge of millions of kettles turning on during popular shows!

The British love their tea. Perhaps a little too much. "TV Pickup" is a phenomenon that affects the British National Grid.

Since many Brits watch the same popular television shows and they also like to fire up their kettles during the same ad breaks in those television shows, the the electricity transmission network is in danger of overuse.

The National Grid devotes significant resources to predicting and preparing for these usage surges. They typically require an extra 200-400 megawatts.

Short term extra supply are found in pumped storage reservoirs. The largest pickup was on July 4, 1990 during a penalty shootout between England and Germany.
