There are more zeroes in a Googolplex than there are individual particles in the Universe!

There are more zeroes in a Googolplex than there are individual particles in the Universe!

Ladies and gentlemen, number nerds from around the world - prepare to be amazed. The googolplex was first proposed by Edward Kasner in 1938 as one, followed by writing zeroes until you get tired". But to explain what a Googolplex is, you have to understand what a Googol is.

A googol is the digit one followed by 100 zeroes. This number is commonly represented 10^100. It looks like this: 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00!

A googolplex on the other hand, is the number 10^Googol. It is commonly represented like this: 10^10^100. It's a lot of zeroes.

In fact, there are so many that if you were to try to count using particles of the universe, you would run out of particles before you reached a Googolplex!

To further explain how large a Googolplex is, Carl Sagan estimated that writing out every zero in a googolplex would be impossible, because it would take up more space than is available in the visible universe!

And yes, Google is named after Googol.

Today's Daily Brain Teaser (Oct 22, 2013)

A Poem By A.A. Milne

Can you figure out what A.A. Milne was referring to in this verse from his "When We Were Very Young" book?

She wore her yellow sun-bonnet,

She wore her greenest gown;

She turned to the south wind

And curtsied up and down.

She turned to the sunlight

And shook her yellow head,

And whispered to her neighbour:

"Winter is dead."

Creativity : Left and Right Brain

The brain is made up of a left hemisphere and a right hemisphere, which are connected in the middle by a bundle of nerves called the corpus callosum. Each side of the brain controls the opposite side of your body. When your left hand moves, it's the right side of your brain that is telling it to do so, and vice versa. Each side also processes information in different ways; the left side tends to be the rational side and the right side tends to be more intuitive or artistic. People are often dominant in one side or the other. Since the thinking process is improved when both hemispheres participate, strengthening your less dominant side is a good idea. If you are right-brained, you might try some logic brain teasers and if you are left-brained, you might try some of our Mentalrobics exercises for creativity.

Some additional characteristics of each hemisphere:

Left Hemisphere

Handles verbal tasks (reading, writing, talking)

Solves problems logically

Looks at differences

Prefers multiple choice tests

Likes to plan and structure information

Prefers analytical tasks

Right Hemisphere

Looks for patterns or similarities

Is fluid and spontaneous

Acts upon hunches or guesses

Handles visual tasks (like drawing)

Prefers open-ended questions

Synthesizes ideas

Handles aesthetic appreciation

Memory : Priming

Here is another technique for remembering people's names.

If you know that you are about to go into a situation where you may need to remember people's names, you can use a technique called "priming." To do this, you will need a list of the people who you might encounter. If you are going to a high school reunion, you could flip through your yearbook. If you are going to a company party, you could scan through the company directory. Studies show that if you have "primed" your memory with all the potential names, you will be much more likely to recall a particular name when you encounter that person at the event.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Ineluctable

in-e-luc-ta-ble

adj :: Not to be avoided, changed, or resisted.

The Law of War allows soldiers to wear enemy uniforms, but not to engage in combat while wearing it!

The Law of War allows soldiers to wear enemy uniforms, but not to engage in combat while wearing it!

The act of war is barbaric. Setting out to kill mass amounts of people goes against all that we know to be right. You would expect that such a divergence from humanity wouldn't have any rules.

There are, however, official laws of war. These are part of international public law and govern the justifications for and conduct of war.

One such rule has to do with uniforms, specifically the enemy's uniform. A soldier is allowed to impersonate their enemy by wearing their uniform (or perhaps they just need some proper clothing).

However, the soldier cannot fight while wearing his enemy's uniform. The soldier cannot take hostages while wearing this foreign uniform either. Seems like a fine line.

The Nazis passed a number of really strict animal protection laws!

The Nazis passed a number of really strict animal protection laws!

The Nazi Party in Germany are known for committing some truly horrifying acts, namely carryout the extermination of Jewish people during the Holocaust.

Considering their complete disregard for humanity, you may be surprised that they were very caring toward animals.

When they came to power in January 1933, they passed a number of anti-animal cruelty laws. These laws were detailed and carried with them severe penalties for breaking them.

This same year, they passed more laws concerning the slaughter of animals, and one of their targets was kosher slaughter. No surprise there.

Adolf Hitler himself said "in the new Reich, no more animal cruelty will be allowed." More laws were passed prohibiting hunting and regulating animal transportation.

Hitler along with several Nazi officials became vegetarian - though not strictly. However, allegedly SS Officers earned their stripes by breaking the neck of a German shepherd dog in front of their officers.

A 17-year-old who hired hitmen to kill her parents almost got out of jail because interrogators didn't have parental consent!

A 17-year-old who hired hitmen to kill her parents almost got out of jail because interrogators didn't have parental consent!

The legal system stands proudly behind the protection of minors, especially when it comes identifying young offenders on the news.

Furthermore, police officers are required to have parental consent before interrogating a minor, whether they are a key witness to a crime or the prime suspect.

Tia Skinner and her legal team were aware of this rule, and tried to use it as a defence in the case against her as police officers did not have parental consent. So, what's the big deal?

Well, the 'big deal' is that Tia Skinner was put on trial for hiring two other teenagers to help kill her parents. She was responsible for her father dying, and for her mother receiving life threatening injuries.

Police couldn't ask permission from her parents to interview Tia Skinner because one of them was dead, and the other was in critical condition!

So, why did Tia Skinner try to kill both of her parents? They took away her cellphone, and refused to let her see her boyfriend of two weeks at the time - who was later hired to kill her parents.

Don't worry - Tia Skinner who was 17 at the time of the murder blames her actions on a bad temper. The judge gave her no sympathy, and was convicted of first degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to murder.

School buses don't have seat belts because they don't need them!

School buses don't have seat belts because they don't need them!

You've been on a school bus before, right? Did you ever feel like you were unsafe or a little unusual because nobody had a seatbelt except for the bus driver?

You, and many other people out there, might have been under the impression that school buses are giant metal death traps. They're not.

In reality school buses are one of the safest ways to travel - almost 40 percent more safe than driving in a regular vehicle.

Part of the safety of a school bus comes from the fact that buses are so much higher off the ground than other vehicles. This is great for the passengers of a school bus and nobody else.

The main reason buses are so safe, and don't need seatbelts is because the bus doesn't actually need seatbelts. Instead, compartmentalization provides enough safety for the business leaders of tomorrow.

Basically, the seats on a bus are placed so close together, and are so padded, that if a bus were to get into an accident - a person occupying a bus seat would hit the seat in front of them which acts exactly like an air bag!

The shooter in an infamous Vietnam execution photo opened a pizzeria in Virginia after the war!

General Nguyen Ngoc Loan of the South Vietnam Army was made internationally famous when Eddie Adams took a picture of the General executing a Viet Cong prisoner. The picture was broadcast all around the world as an anti-war symbol.

General Loan's reputation was tarnished, as many people viewed him as an evil person who brutishly killed an innocent man.

However, Eddie Adams says that General Loan was killing a man who was responsible for torturing American soldiers. Adams denied a Pulitzer Prize, as he felt incredibly for destroying General Loan's image. For the rest of his life, Adams defended General Loan time and time again.

As for Nguyen Ngoc Loan, he Vietnam around the time Saigon fell in 1975 and he moved to America. He opened up a small pizza restaurant in Burke, Virginia.

It wasn't long before someone recognized him, and he had to shut down the restaurant after receiving many threats. The last time Eddie Adams visited the restaurant, he saw the words "We know who you are f**ker" written on the bathroom walls. If you want to look at the picture, it's here. We gotta warn you it can be disturbing to some.

Blockbuster had the chance to buy Netflix for $50 MILLION in 2000!

Blockbuster had the chance to buy Netflix for $50 MILLION in 2000!

In 1998 Reed Hastings grew tired of having to pay the absurdly high late fees bestowed upon him by Blockbuster.

He didn't just complain, he thought of an alternative system to renting movies. Hastings dreamed big, worked hard, and Netflix was born.

In 2000, Reed Hastings approached Blockbuster to try and sell his company to them, however Blockbuster denied the offer saying there was no future in that business. Oops.

For four long years, Blockbuster ignored the fact that Netflix was on the up swing and rapidly growing in popularity. Finally, in 2004, Blockbuster tried getting in the market of home delivery. It was much too late, Netflix and Redbox were already dominating the market.

Today, blockbuster had to file for bankruptcy. Even during Blockbuster's dying days, the CEO arrogantly said ”I’ve been frankly confused by this fascination that everybody has with Netflix …

Netflix doesn’t really have or do anything that we can’t or don’t already do ourselves.” Essentially, he said that Netflix is worth no real threat.

In 2012, Netflix earned over $3,000,000,000 in revenue. Blockbuster could have made the best business move of all time - instead of the worst.
