Memory : The Link Method

The link method is a simple way to remember a list of items in order.

Suppose you have to do a few chores such as drop off the kids at school, go to the bank, and then do some grocery shopping. Try linking these items together in a little story: "I'm going to drop the kids off at the bank because they can crawl through the slot in the teller window and pick out the groceries from inside the vault."

The more unusual the story, the more likely you are to remember it!

With practice, it's possible to quickly remember at least a dozen items using this method, and it also gives you a chance to stretch your creativity by thinking up crazy stories.

In ancient Athens voters were allowed to banish thier politicians!

In ancient Athens voters were allowed to banish thier politicians!

Ostracism was a procedure under the Athenian democracy in which any citizen could be expelled from the city-state of Athens for ten years.

While some instances clearly expressed popular anger at the citizen, ostracism was often used preemptively. It was used as a way of neutralizing someone thought to be a threat to the state or potential tyrant.

Crucially, ostracism had no relation to the processes of justice. There was no charge or defense, and the exile was not in fact a penalty; it was simply a command from the Athenian people that one of their numbers be gone for ten years.

A modern use developed from the term is to describe informal exclusion from a group through social rejection, although the psychology of ostracism takes this further, where it has been defined as “Any behavior in which a group or individual excludes and ignores another group or individual”.

A town in Australia fined NASA for littering!

A town in Australia fined NASA for littering!

Esperance is a regional city in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. As funny as it might sound, this city was able to face off NASA and get some money out of them (well, not them exactly).

In 1979, pieces of the space station Skylab crashed onto Esperance after the craft broke up over the Indian Ocean. The municipality fined the United States $400 for littering. The fine was paid in April 2009, when radio show host Scott Barley of Highway Radio raised the funds from his morning show listeners, and paid the fine on behalf of NASA.

Iraq still uses a bomb detecting device that is totally fake.

The ADE-651 is a device marketed as a bomb detector. It is used widely in Iraq for that very purpose, and has generated millions of pounds in profits for it's developer, Jim McCormick, and his company ATSC.

There is, however, just one problem: The ADE-651 is literally a useless hunk of plastic, and does not detect bombs, or anything for that matter. The product was banned in 2010 and Jim McCormick was finally convicted of fraud in April 2013.

ATSC built and sold the ADE-651 detectors throughout 2008 and 2009, advertising them as the ultimate bomb detector.

The specific claims were that the device was powered by "the body's energy fields" and it detected bombs using special cards that had been through "the proprietary process of electro-static matching of the ionic charge and structure of the substance".

In addition to this magic, the detectors were claimed to be able to operate at great distances (5000 meters from an aircraft) and to get around all methods of bomb concealment.

Treasure chest / jewelry box

Treasure chest / jewelry box

This is from a couple of years ago. My daughters had gotten to the point where they would prefer cash for Christmas, but that’s just boring, so I always try to find something fun to do with it. My younger daughter and her boyfriend are into geocaching, so I made a fake geocaching.com web page with instructions to find it (in the woods behind the house). She also needed a jewelery box. Since it was a treasure to be found, it needed to be in a treasure chest, filled with gold dollar coins (had to go to three banks to get them all).

The box is made from 1/4” red oak, glued together with Titebond, no nails or screws. The curved top is actually six strips with the edges beveled as appropriate. 1/2” square pieces reinforce the corners of the box and serve as a support for the tray. Then several coats of clear shellac, red velvet lining, and brass hardware.

Christmas morning started with a tiny box containing the keys (“What’s this?”), then another box containing an envelope with the website address, where she had to solve a puzzle to get the GPS coordinates (a puzzle only she could solve so nobody else could decipher the coordinates), and finally a walk through the woods and across the hard frozen swamp to those coordinates to find the box (carefully hidden the night before in the roots of an old tree).

All in all a fun Christmas, and one she won’t soon forget!

1 out of every 86 adults in Louisiana is in jail—and the reason why will shock you!

1 out of every 86 adults in Louisiana is in jail—and the reason why will shock you!

There are a lot of people in jail in Louisiana—does this mean that the state has more criminals or is it something to do with it's laws and incarceration system? Apparently prison in Louisiana is a $182 million "industry" because many inmates are housed in for-profit facilities.

While several private prison companies are players in the market, the major players are rural sheriffs. With each inmate worth $24.39 a day in state money, sheriffs may just be incentivized to keep up the number of prisoners. In the past two decades, Louisiana's prison population has doubled. However, this is due to high crime rates too—New Orleans leads the nation in number of homicides.

With one in every 86 people in jail, Louisiana is the world's prison capital. It is 13 times China's prison rate and 20 times that of Germany.

The oldest woman ever once outlived a man waiting for her to die. This story is astounding!

The oldest woman ever once outlived a man waiting for her to die. This story is astounding!

Andre-Francois Raffray thought he was getting a good deal when he agreed to pay Jeanne Calment $500/month for her grand apartment. The specifics of the deal were this - Raffray must pay $500 a month to Calment until she died, and considering she was 90 years old at the time, seems like a steal.

However, Calment then went on to live another 32 years to be the oldest person at 122 years old. She outlived Raffray who died at 77 years old. His widow then had to pay Calment $500/month.

This "for life" arrangement is common in France. When the owner dies, the renter gets the apartment, no matter how much has been paid. Didn't work out very well for Raffray though.

South Africans call traffic lights "robots"—You'll never guess why!

South Africans call traffic lights "robots"—You'll never guess why!

Every language and every country has it's own slang. There are even huge differences between each U.S. State. South Africa is no different: it has dozens of words used to describe people, places and things that other English-speaking nations do not have.

Some of these are poppie (a ditzy woman), snackwich (a grilled cheese sandwich), and tekkies/tackies (sneakers). Somewhat confusingly, they call traffic lights "robots." They of course call actual robots "robots" too.

The practice of calling traffic lights robots came about when they were first installed in South Africa. Then, they were called "robot policemen" and the name was shortened over time.

Certain pennies from 1943 are worth over $70,000! Do you have one?

Certain pennies from 1943 are worth over $70,000! Do you have one?

You may scoff at coin collecting as an old person's hobby, but if done right, it could be quite lucrative. It turns out that certain coins are worth a lot of money. Specifically, wheat pennies can be worth tens of thousands.

A number of factors, including whether the coin is circulated or uncirculated (circulated meaning that it was used in commerce and thus has some wear and tear, and uncirculated meaning it was never used for payment), and what kind of mint marker it has, determine the penny's value.

A 1943 S bronze circulated penny is worth $78,000! More impressively, an uncirculated 1943 bronze penny is worth $90,000. A 1944 uncirculated steel penny is worth $100,000. And amazingly, an uncirculated 1943 D bronze penny is worth $1.25 million!
