1 in 3 people sneeze when exposed to bright light. But why? People have wondered since the 3rd century BC!

Sneezing due to exposure to bright light, like sunlight, is known as the photic sneeze reflex. About one out of three people are born with this genetic quirk which scientists are still unable to fully explain.

Mostly it is unexplained because there has not been that much research done about it yet. There have been attempts at explaining it, and even Aristotle wondered and wrote about it in his ‘Book of Problems’ in the 3rd century BC. He proposed that the heat of the sun was probably responsible.

A very simple demonstration by Francis Baker, some 2000 years later, proved Aristotle wrong. He stepped into the sun with his eyes closed and did not sneeze, despite the presence of the heat. He then surmised that the light makes the eyes water, which in turn irritated the nose, resulting in a sneeze.

Neurological experts now agree, however, that the phenomenon is a result of crossed wires in the brain. When we are suddenly exposed to bright light, the optical nerve typically sends a signal to the brain to constrict the pupils. In people with a photic sneeze reflex, some of that signal is picked up by the trigeminal nerve. That is the nerve that is triggered by an irritation in the nose. Due to this mixed message received by the brain, it registers the signal as an irritation in the nose, resulting in a uncalled-for sneeze.

Although the gene responsible for this ‘sun sneezing’ has not been identified yet, a publication in 1978 was more concerned about renaming the photic sneeze reflex. They suggested Autosomal-dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst syndrome: ACHOO.

Well, bless you!

This species of moth feeds on elephant tears. Some moths even feed on human tears!

Mabra Elephantophila is a species of moth that astonished entomologists when it was discovered. Why? Because this moth feeds on elephant tears!

It is now believed that these moths find elephant tears quite a nutritious meal, because the animal’s tears are not only made up of water and salt, but also contain trace levels of protein. Because it is so tiny, this shy and delicate little moth can drink it's fill from the eye of the elephant without the large animal even noticing.

Some other moths feed on tears as well. They all keep away from the tears of carnivores and prefer the tears of large hoofed animals. Some occasionally even drink the tears of humans. Each species has a unique way of getting to their favourite snack.

Some moths insert their proboscis under the eyelid of a sleeping host and then suck up the liquid. Others use the same tubular feeding structure to irritate the eye into producing tears, after which they can drink it up.

But the most unfortunate moth species, the Poncetia, has such a short proboscis that it has to drink while clinging to the eyeball itself—proving that size does matter. For this little under-endowed creature, timing is of the essence because its life could literally be ended in the blink of an eye.

A man rescued a baby he found in a dumpster—and you'll never believe who the father was!

A man rescued a baby he found in a dumpster—and you'll never believe who the father was!

We live in a cruel world—but sometimes the world has a funny way of twisting events. In Calgary, Canada, a 29-year-old woman stuffed her newborn baby into a garbage bag and left it in a random dumpster. She abandoned the baby after she gave birth, claiming that she didn't know she was pregnant. The father of the baby had no idea either.

It wasn't long before a man found the newborn in the dumpster. He immediately thought to himself 'I've got to get that baby out of there'. The baby was suffering from hypothermia, and he rushed it to the hospital.

As it turns out, the man's girlfriend of four years was the woman who left the baby in the dumpster in the first place. The baby was his. He never suspected his girlfriend was pregnant—because according to him, she's a little "hefty".

The man and the woman are now fighting for custody of the baby.

Dr. Ruth, the famous sex therapist, was once a sniper in the Israeli army!

Dr. Ruth was born Karola Ruth Siegel in Germany, in 1928. Her entire family was murdered during the holocaust, but not before her mother and grandmother managed to send her away to the safety of Switzerland.

She was 17 years old when WWII ended. Orphaned, ans with nowhere to call home, she moved to Israel. She was dedicated to building a Jewish homeland and joined Haganah, an underground Jewish military organisation.

Her skills as a lethal sniper were discovered in her teenage years. Despite being tiny, she was also amazingly accurate at throwing hand grenades.

On her 20th birthday, just as she completed her watch, an Arab shell exploded at her feet. The metal pierced her legs, leaving her with severe injuries and cutting her military career short. The incident left three others dead and many severely wounded.

During the span of her career as a sex therapist, author and media personality, Dr Ruth received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, the Medal for Distinguished Service from the Teacher’s College at Columbia University, as well as many other awards.

“I am what you call bold because the one thing that I've learned coming out of Nazi Germany, is that I have to stand up and be counted for what I believe. And that is how people are listening to me, because they know it is not a put-on” – Dr Ruth Westheimer.

This was the youngest known person to commit suicide—did six year old Samantha know that she would never come back?

On 2 December 2009, six year old Samantha Kuberski of Oregon tied a corduroy belt around her neck and onto the top railing of an unused crib, and hung herself. She was found unconscious, rushed to hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

In January 2010 her death was officially declared a suicide, making her the youngest known suicide victim. But can it really be called a suicide?

Samantha was a happy child who did well in school. On the fateful day, she got into an argument with her mother and was sent to her room. Her mother and three sisters were in other parts of the house when Samantha hung herself.

After the incident, police interviewed the family and ruled out foul play. They also found no evidence that the little girl was ever abused. The detectives involved in the case insist on calling it an accident, despite the medical examiner ruling it a suicide. They say that such a small child could not possibly be aware of the consequences of her actions.

Adolescent psychiatrists like Dr Kirk Wolfe agree with their argument. “Most kids this age are not aware of what death actually is,” he said. “Not until they get to be 8, 9 or 10 do they understand death is final and you don’t come back.”

Goldfish have a memory span of several months and can even be trained to do tricks!

Goldfish have a memory span of several months and can even be trained to do tricks!

Have you ever heard it said that goldfish have a memory-span of only three seconds? That could not be further from the truth!

Goldfish have both associative learning abilities and social learning skills. They can distinguish between individual humans and will sometimes hide from strangers.

When they get used to seeing the same human on a daily basis, they stop considering that person as a threat and will even swim towards him/her, or swim to the surface mouthing for food.

Over time, goldfish will associate their owner with food and will start ‘begging’ whenever their owner comes near the tank. After several weeks or months, it will become possible to hand feed your fish without it being startled.

Besides the fact that they have a memory-span of at least three months, they can also distinguish between different shapes and sounds. They can also distinguish between four different colors: Red, green, blue and ultraviolet. Through the use of positive reinforcement, goldfish can be trained to recognize light signals of different colors, and can even be trained to do tricks! Positive reinforcement means that if you give your goldfish a treat after doing a trick, it is more likely that it would want to repeat that behavior.

The duration of the short term memory in humans, thought, is believed to be only a few seconds...

Samurai in feudal Japan were allowed to execute civilians who paid them disrespect!

Samurai warriors were the primary military and lower nobility of medieval and feudal Japan. Samurai described themselves as followers of Bushido, or"The Way of the Warrior".

A tradition passed down through generations, Bushido stated that the path of the warrior was one of honor. Highly valued traits were duty to one's master, and loyalty until death.

Being a highly ranking Samurai came with many benefits and rewards. Primary among all of them was respect, and any person who paid them disrespect would fall under their katana. In order to keep their honor, samurai in Japan were allowed to execute civilians that disrespected them.

The other important right that Samurai were given was the ability to carry weapons in public. Legally, they were the only social class allowed to bear arms.

Ever notice that Ted's kids in How I Met Your Mother never age? Ever wonder why?

One of TV's greatest sitcoms is coming to an end. How I Met Your Mother is an American sitcom that is currently in it's ninth and final season. Ted, in the year 2030, recounts to his son and daughter the events that led him to meeting their mother.

Throughout the seasons, we never see Ted's “kids” getting any older. How is it possible for a show that has lasted nine seasons to have characters that seemingly don't age?

Good planning, really. All of Ted's kids' scenes in How I Met Your Mother were filmed in the first season so they looked the same age throughout the show.

There is a "Nashville Curse" that only one band has broken in 30 years! Do you know which band?

There is a "Nashville Curse" that only one band has broken in 30 years! Do you know which band?

Ever since the 1980s, bands from Nashville, TN have been cursed. A litte back story: in the early 80s, there was an extremely talented band called Jeremy & the Nashville Scorchers.

They seemed destined for superstardom, but their managament insisted on one thing—they had to take "Nashville" out of their name. The did, and the Scorchers went on to critical acclaim, but never became the household name everyone expected.

Ever since, bands from Nashville have been cursed to never have a record sell one million copies, a feat rewarded with a platinum record.

That is, of course, until Paramore busted onto the scene. The band, fronted by redhead Hayley Williams, broke the barrier easily with their sophomore album Riot! and haven't looked back since.
