Many Jews in Nazi ghettos chose to stage uprising instead of being sent to concentration camps.

The holocaust was the mass genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany and other parts of German-occupied Europe.

Approximately two-thirds of the nine million Jews that lived throughout Europe were killed, including women and children.

Many of these people knew they were going to die in the Nazi extermination camps, and acknowledging their death was inevitable, they chose to stage uprisings instead of submitting meekly to their fate. Despite a series of small victories, they were unable to keep themselves from being sent to the camps, and the survivors were only freed when Allied Forces reached the camps in 1944.

These people were decided to fight for their freedom or die trying. The image in this post is one of Vladka Meed, a noted member of the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw ghetto and Treblinka concentration camp.

4. Your best friend just gave you a surprise birthday party. List five reasons why you should be angry with him or her.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Incogitant

in-cog-i-tant

adj :: Thoughtless or inconsiderate.

"My friends are too incogitant to have planned a birthday party for me."

Memory : Short-Term Memory

The average person's short-term memory can only hold 7 pieces of information for about 30 seconds. If you want to get something into your long-term memory, you're going to need to remember it for at least 30 seconds.

This is probably why it's easy to forget someone's name moments after hearing it. The name only sticks in your brain for 30 seconds, and unless you do something to push it into your long-term memory, you are going to forget it.

To get more than 7 items at a time into your long-term memory, you can try the Chunking Technique we discussed yesterday. Repetition can also help.

But remember, having a limited short-term memory is a good thing! Imagine how cluttered your mind would be if you remembered every single thing that went into it.

Craisins are not dried cranberries

Craisins are not dried cranberries

It's true that alone and unadorned, cranberries are almost a perfect diet food, as they are high in vitamins and fiber while being low in carbs and calories.A dried cranberry is made by partially dehydrating fresh cranberries. You can find them in trail mix, salads and breads. Some people call them craisins, however, "craisins" are not dried cranberries.

Craisins are a registered trademark of Ocean Spray Cranberries, and even though the company claims that they are just dried cranberries, that isn't quite the truth.Craisins are not dried cranberries (like raisins are dried grapes). Instead, Ocean Spray squeezes all of the juice out of the cranberries, and then rehydrates the discarded cranberry husks with corn syrup, cittric acid, and a little bit of cranberry and elderflower juice. In fact, craisins contain more sugar by weight than they do cranberry!

The Chernobyl nuclear plant continued to produce electricity until the year 2000!

The Chernobyl disaster was one of the biggest catastrophes that Ukraine has ever experienced. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over the whole area.

This disaster is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and is one of only two classified at the highest level on the International Nuclear Event Scale. Long term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for.

Despite the high contamination in the area, the Chernobyl nuclear plant continued to produce electricity until it was finally decommissioned in 2000. The photo in this post is from a school in Pripyat, the town next to the power plant.

Desk/Hutch

Desk/Hutch

Hi all, I just joined LJ so I thought I would post some of my most recent projects. This is a desk that my wife wanted to clean up all of the kids electronics and give them a place to do homework besides the dining room table. There’s a power strip mounted across the top back inside the desk to charge all the laptops and tablets, and one of the drawers has 4 power plugs and two USB ports to charge they’re games and phones/iPods. It’s built in three pieces to make it easy to move. I used a lot of hidden pocket screws for the construction, no nails anywhere except for the one piece of trim at the top. Now when guests come over She can just close the desk and everything is nice and clean.

The Filipino flag is sometimes flown upside-down. Do you know why?

Every country has a flag with a distinctive design that is used as a symbol for the country and its people. The study of flags is called vexillology. The very first flags were used to assist military coordination on battlefields, and have since evolved into a general tool for signaling and identification.

Every country has symbolic reasons for the colors they portray on their flags and the symbols that are within. The Philippines is no exception.

The flag of the Philippines is also known as the Three Stars and a Sun. It has two stripes, one royal blue and the other scarlet red. The Filipino flag is flown with the red stripe up in times of war and blue stripe up in times of peace.
