Picture a raindrop in your head. You probably pictured it wrong. This is why.

Picture a raindrop in your head. You probably pictured it wrong. This is why.

Most illustrators and even science books will show raindrops as tear shaped. The idea has persisted in popular culture for unknown reasons.

We see the tear shape and we think...rain. Your local TV news channel will even illustrate a coming rain storm with tear shapes!

Raindrops start out as round high in the atmosphere as water collects on dust and smoke particles in clouds. But as raindrops fall, they lose their rounded shape.

Instead, a raindrop is more like the top half of a hamburger bun. Flattened on the bottom and with a curved dome top, raindrops are anything but the classic tear shape.

The reason is due to their speed falling through the atmosphere.

Creativity : Engineering Challenge : Egg Drop

Engineering challenges are fun activities that are frequently assigned to students in physics or engineering classes, but they can easily be used outside of these venues. An engineering challenge usually has a simple goal and some rules about what sorts of materials you are allowed to use. These are great ways to get people thinking creatively and to foster teamwork and competition. Try an engineering challenge at a birthday party, office outing, scout meeting, or any other gathering where you want to have fun and exercise your creativity.

The Egg Drop is one of the most famous engineering challenges. Each team is given a raw egg (sometimes light bulbs are used instead) and a small amount of simple building materials such as toothpicks, popsicle sticks, glue, rubber bands, paper, tape, etc. Each team should use the same materials. The teams must then build a device that will protect their egg from a drop of a specified height (at least 10 feet). Set a reasonable time limit and have some small prizes for any team that succeeds in creating something that will protect an egg from breaking upon landing.

Memory : Attention

One reason that we may forget a certain fact is because we never really learned it in the first place. This has a lot to do with attention. When your spouse or parent tells you something while you are watching TV, your attention is diverted so you will not acquire the new information. If you want to remember something, you must pay attention to it. A person can only pay attention to one thing at a time; therefore, watching TV or talking on the phone while you do your homework will not achieve optimum results as your attention will constantly be shifting back and forth.

Studies have shown that paying attention to a task is much more important than the time spent on the task. A person who concentrates completely on a task for 15 minutes may remember more than someone who studies it for an hour with the TV going in the background.

To prove that you must pay attention to something to remember it, answer these four simple questions:

1. Which way does Lincoln face on the penny?

2. On a traffic light, is red on the top or bottom?

3. Does water go clockwise or counterclockwise down the drain?

4. How many freckles are on the back of your hand?

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Fulminate

ful-mi-nate

verb :: To issue a thunderous verbal attack.

"The candidate fulminated against his opponents policies"

You know when you learn something new and thenyou see that fact everywhere? There's a name for that!

You know when you learn something new and thenyou see that fact everywhere? There's a name for that!

You’ve probably come across an obscure piece of information-often an unfamiliar name or word-and then started seeing everywhere, as if it’s following you around.

Now while we want to think that this phenomenon is the universe talking to us, the actual phenomenon is called Bladder-Meinhof.

Our brains have a natural prejudice towards patterns. Now, when taking into account the words, names, and ideas that are exchanged through the course of an average day, we are bound to see the same information twice within a short period of time.

When such a thing occurs, the brain takes special note of the intersection because they the two instances make up the beginning of a sequence.

The reason all those other pieces of information don’t seem to repeat is because they don’t conform to a particularly interesting or unique pattern.

As a result, we often don’t remember those quite as well. It’s also worth noting that continuously seeing just-learned information repeated is in itself a unique/interesting pattern, which also may contribute to why we remember those instances more clearly and place such importance on them.

How amazing our brains can be!

What would happen if Dracula bit Superman? Luckily this comic answered it for us.

What would happen if Dracula bit Superman? Luckily this comic answered it for us.

Who would’ve ever thought you’d seen both Superman and Dracula in the same comic strip. Well, it happened!

Apparently, not only kryptonite can be harmful to the great man of steel. Supernatural enemies can also have a strong point against him, and this includes Dracula and his supernatural powers.

For many years, vampires and many other supernatural creatures were not allowed to appear in comic books because of the horror they resembled and people didn’t want their little kids to get frightened back then.

In one of Superman’s issues, Superman was once bitten by Dracula. But because the Man of Steel is fueled by the sun, Dracula immediately exploded.

It looks like a great strip! It might be worth checking it out!

This is the best way to mess with an Apple Store employee.

This is the best way to mess with an Apple Store employee.

Apple tells it's new recruits exactly what to think and say. It’s all in their Genius Training Manual.

It's a penetrating look inside Apple: Psychological mastery, banned words, roleplaying—you've never seen anything like it.

Apple tries to make sure that it's employees offer the best service possible to their customers, especially since they’re the ones that have made this company so rich.

One of Apple’s strong policies is that THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. Therefore, they might sometimes encounter people who are not that related to Apple products and that mispronounce the name of their products.

In case they have to deal with a customer that pronounces the names of products wrong, employees are not allowed to correct them. If you want to irritate an employee, go try mispronouncing one of their products as bad as you can.

How did a stray cat make a Japanese train station go from losing money to being profitable?

How did a stray cat make a Japanese train station go from losing money to being profitable?

A loss-making Japanese railway company came back on track thanks to the popularity of a stray cat!

Wearing a black cap and posing for photos with passengers, Tama (the cat) is credited with boosting Wakayama Electric Railway's revenue by 10%.

The firm had to axe all staff at Kishi station in western Japan two years ago. But Tama stuck by her post and was rewarded with promotion to station manager. The pet mascot even has her own office, a former ticket booth.

The feline, who was born and raised at the station in the city of Kinokawa, Wakayama prefecture, is living proof of the Japanese belief that cats are good luck.
