Italians owe the Americas for this key pizza ingredient.

Italians owe the Americas for this key pizza ingredient.

One of the strangest things about the history of the tomato is the fact that, although it is of American origin, it was unknown as food in this country until long after it was commonly eaten in Europe!

Until hardly more than a hundred years ago it was generally thought to be poisonous in the United States.

Long before it was considered here as fit to eat, it was grown only as an ornamental garden plant, sometimes called "love apple."

Cultivated tomatoes apparently originated as wild forms in the Peru-Ecuador-Bolivia area of the Andes. They were later taken to Europe where the Italians started growing them around 1550 and apparently were the first Europeans to eat it.

Disney Songs: "I'll Make A Man Out Of You"

How well do you know this song from "Mulan"?

Creativity : Creative Environments

Your environment has a big impact upon your creative ability. If you work in a cubicle with perfectly white walls, boring furniture and elevator music, your creativity is probably going to be stifled.

Each person has his or her own particular environment that fosters performance. Some people do better in cold rooms, some in hot rooms. Some people like music, and others require silence. Some additional factors that affect performance are windows, lighting, color, decorations, food and drink, size of space, etc.

If you work in a group, try to be sensitive to the needs of your teammates. If you know that someone works best in silence, try to keep your music down (or use headphones). If some people work well on a sugar high, bring cookies and soda into your brainstorms. Simple changes around the office or classroom can have big effects on how people function in those spaces.

Memory : Study in Bed

Many students study in bed before going to sleep. They may also study in bed at other times because it is a comfortable place. This should be avoided because it can interfere with good sleep. If you study in bed, then studying will become associated with your bed, and whenever you get into bed your mind will think about studying. An active mind can cause difficulty in falling to sleep, and sleep is very important, especially for students who rarely get an adequate amount of it. Additionally, there is not enough time for material that is learned immediately before going to sleep to sink into our minds; it is often forgotten by the time we wake up.

Another possibility is that sleep might become associated with studying. If this happens, whenever you sat down to study, regardless of the time or place, your mind will start to get sleepy. Obviously, this would limit the effectiveness of your studying!

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Coterie

co-ter-ie

noun :: An intimate and often exclusive group of persons with a unifying common interest or purpose.

"The Quilting Coterie got together every Sunday evening to make quilts."

The movie 'I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry' was forced to cut a gay kiss! Why?

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry is a 2007 American comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan, written by Barry Fanaro, and starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James as the title characters.

Although the film received negative reviews by critics for it's very crude humor and portrayal of gay people, it was a financial success, ranking #1 at the box office.

The film's depiction of same-sex marriage in New York preceded the 2011 enactment of the Marriage Equality Act, which legalized marriage for same-sex couples in the state.

At the time of the film's release, the state allowed for residents to file for unregistered cohabitation rights, and various municipal and county governments offered domestic partnership registries.

Also, the movie had to cut out a gay kiss to avoid an R rating since the MPAA finds anything related to homosexual content worthy of a higher rating.

Time Zones are a much newer invention than you think! Learn here.

Time Zones are a much newer invention than you think! Learn here.

Time zones were created for legal, commercial and social purposes.

It is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time, so time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions.

Before clocks were invented, people marked the time of day with apparent solar time. When well-regulated mechanical clocks became widespread in the early 19th century, each city began to use some local mean solar time.

Apparent and mean solar time can differ by up to around 15 minutes due to the non-circular shape of the Earth's orbit around the sun and the tilt of the Earth's axis.

In order to avoid confusion, people around the World decided to establish their time zones, this way, they’d become more efficient in every single aspect of their legal, commercial and social purposes.

During the battle of Stalingrad, a railway station changed from Soviet to German control 14 times in 6 hours!

The Battle of Stalingrad was the major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and it's allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad in the southwestern Soviet Union.

Marked by constant close quarters combat and disregard for military and civilian casualties, it is among the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare.

By the evening of the first day, the Soviet 62nd Army had been reduced to 90 tanks, 700 mortars and just 20,000 personnel. The remaining tanks were used as immobile strongpoints within the city. The initial German attack attempted to take the city in a rush.

The 13th Guards Rifle Division (Soviet Army), assigned at Railway Station No. 1 suffered particularly heavy losses.

Over 30 percent of it's soldiers were killed in the first 24 hours, and just 320 out of the original 10,000 survived the entire battle. The objective was taken, but only temporarily.

The railway station changed hands 14 times in six hours. By the following evening, the 13th Guards Rifle Division had ceased to exist.

How far did the Kennedy family go to guard their reputation? They cut a piece of JFK's sister's brain out.

How far did the Kennedy family go to guard their reputation? They cut a piece of JFK's sister's brain out.

Rosemary Kennedy, also known as John F. Kennedy’s sister had to go through an awkward situation.

Placid and easygoing as a child and teenager, the maturing Kennedy became increasingly assertive in her personality. She was reportedly subject to violent mood swings.

Some observers have since attributed this behavior to her difficulties in keeping up with siblings who were expected to perform to high standards, as well as the hormonal surges associated with puberty.

In any case, the family had difficulty dealing with the often-stormy Rosemary, who had begun to sneak out at night from the convent where she was cared for and educated.

In 1941, when Rosemary was 23, doctors told her father that a new neurosurgical procedure, a lobotomy, would help calm her mood swings and sometimes-violent outbursts.

Joseph P. Kennedy decided that Rosemary should have the lobotomy performed, but did not inform Rose until afterwards. At the time, relatively few lobotomies had been performed, and the family feared she would disgrace their reputation.
