9/11 was also responsible for 1600 automobile deaths because so many people stopped flying and drove instead!

On September 11, 2001, when the United States was attacked by foreign terrorists, all planes were grounded to make sure that no more jets could be used as missiles.

As such, many people had to drive instead of fly to their destinations. Even when the airlines were back to operating, less people used them.

Airline miles fell by between 12% and 20% in the months after the attacks. People who were fearful of flying took to their cars instead.

Terrorists attacks aside, it is actually safer to travel the same distance by airplane than by car.

While we can be sure just how many more accidents and deaths occurred due to this increase in driving, according to risk specialist, Professor Gerd Gigerenzer, about 1,595 extra Americans died in car accidents in the year after 9/11.

A farmer challenges an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician to fence off the largest amount of area using the least amount of fence.

The engineer made his fence in a circle and said it was the most efficient.

The physicist made a long line and said that the length was infinite. Then he said that fencing half of the Earth was the best.

The mathematician laughed at the others and with his design, beat the others. What did he do?

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Equivocal

e-quiv-o-cal

adjective :: Having two significations equally applicable; capable of double interpretation; of doubtful meaning; ambiguous; uncertain; doubtful.

"D'Artagnan, however, gathered from his equivocal replies that the road to the right was the one he ought to take, and on that uncertain information he resumed his journey." --Dumas, Alexandre

Creativity : Quota

Thinking fluently is a key quality of a creative thinker. One way to force yourself to think fluently is to impose a quota upon yourself. Set a time limit and a goal for a certain number of ideas, and then start writing down every idea that comes to mind. The initial ideas will usually be less interesting than the later ones because all of the obvious concepts are right at the surface of your consciousness. If you go long enough to get through the obvious concepts, you will have much better results. For this reason, you should set your quota high and keep writing down your ideas until the time limit expires.

Memory : Prospective Memory

Prospective memory is the memory for actions that you want to take in the future. Retrospective memory is the memory of things that have already happened. It is generally more bothersome to people to forget to do something than it is to forget something that you already did.

One way to improve prospective memory is to link it to something that you cannot forget. For example, if you are having trouble remembering to mail your letters, put the letters under your keys. The next time you leave the house, you will be reminded of the mail.

Another way is visualize the intended action in a place where you will not forget it. For example, visualize your car turning into a giant mailbox. The next time you see your car, you will be reminded to mail your letters.

Sometimes you may also have trouble remembering routine events, such as taking your medicine. One way to help this is to work the event into your habitual daily routine. For example, start taking your pills before breakfast. You will never forget to eat breakfast, so if you get in the habit, you will no longer forget your medicine.

There’s a federal court case titled “United States vs. Approximately 64,695 Pounds of Shark Fins!”

There’s a federal court case titled “United States vs. Approximately 64,695 Pounds of Shark Fins!”

Federal court cases usually have fairly normal names like "Roe v. Wade," or "Brown v. Board of Education."

However, these case titles need to be accurate, and sometimes they just don't fit the mold. Such was the case with the 2008 case titled "United States of America, Tai Loong Hong Marine Products. Limited v. Approximately 64,695 Pounds of Shark Fins."

You're just dying to know what this one was about, right? Tai Loong Hong Marine Products, Ltd. (TLH), a Hong Kong company, chartered an American ship, the King Diamond II.

The ship then went to meet foreign fishing vessels in the open ocean in order to purchase shark fins.

The Shark Finning Prohibition Act forbids anyone aboard a U.S. Fishing vessel from possessing shark fins obtained from prohibited "shark finning." Hence, the US felt that they could seize the "approximately 64,695 pounds of shark fins."

TLH argued that the King Diamond II was not a fishing vessel and as such, the act did not apply.

A woman holds a Guinness World Record for highest fall survived with no parachute because she was in a plane crash!

A woman holds a Guinness World Record for highest fall survived with no parachute because she was in a plane crash!

On January 26th 1972, a Yugoslavian commercial airliner was attacked by a Croatian terrorist group.

A bomb went off while the airplane was at 33,000 feet. It tore the plane into several pieces, which then proceeded to plummet to Earth. The pieces crashed on a frozen mountain-top below.

Every person on the plane was killed, save for one. Flight attendant Vesna Vulovic survived. A German man found her at the crash site covered by another body and pinned by a refreshment cart.

The man was a trained medic so did all he could for Vulovic until he could get her to a hospital. She suffered a fractured skull, two broken legs and three broken vertebrae.

She was temporarily paralyzed before surgery allowed her to regain the use of her legs.

Vulovic now holds the Guinness World Record for highest fall survived without a parachute - 33,330 feet! It was later revealed that Vulovic wasn't supposed to be on that flight at all. Her schedule had been mixed up with another flight attendant named Vesna.

A Colombian soccer player was murdered for scoring an ‘own goal’ in the 1994 World Cup!

A Colombian soccer player was murdered for scoring an ‘own goal’ in the 1994 World Cup!

Soccer fans (or should I say "futbol") take the sport very seriously. Too seriously judging from the after events of a 1994 World Cup match between the United States and Colombia.

During the game, which Colombia was expected to win, one of their players, Andres Escobar, accidentally scored on his own goal.

This gave the Americans a 1 - 0 lead, and they went on to win the game 2 -1 knocking the Colombians out of the World Cup.

After Escobar returned home to Colombia, he was gunned down. Three men attacked him as he was leaving a night club and shot him 12 times.

According to eye witnesses, the shooter said "goal, goal" every time he fired. Escobar later died in the hospital.

Escobar was not the only one targeted. The day the team played the United States, the Colombian coach and assistant coach received faxed death threats against their family.

Colombians, Americans and members of the international soccer community were horrified by the violent and pointless death.

The rights to 7 Up are owned by Pepsi in every country EXCEPT the US!

The rights to 7 Up are owned by Pepsi in every country EXCEPT the US!

The popular lemony-limey soft drink, 7 Up was launched in 1929. It was originally called Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda.

(No wonder they changed the name) Until 1950, it contained the mood-stabilizing drug lithium citrate. Obviously, 7 Up has come a long way from where it started.

Today, there are many different variations, including Diet 7 Up, Cherry 7 Up, Orange 7 Up, and Retro 7 Up.

Interestingly enough, while 7 Up is sold all around the world, two different companies hold the rights to the brand depending on what country you're in.

In the United States, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group owns the rights to the brand. In the rest of the world PepsiCo owns the 7 Up brand.

Starbucks had to close 61 Australian stores because Australians’ coffee culture is too sophisticated!

Starbucks had to close 61 Australian stores because Australians’ coffee culture is too sophisticated!

In July 2008, Starbucks closed 61 of their 84 Australian stores and laid off nearly 700 employees.

The company, which is a huge success in the United States and other parts of the world, struggled in Australia. These 61 stores were "underperforming."

The company left South Australia, Tasmania and ACT but kept stores open in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Some experts said that Starbucks did not truly understand the Australian coffee market.

While the company was a success in the United States for introducing quality, European-style coffee, Australia already had a "very sophisticated coffee culture."

In the end, Starbucks couldn't compete with Australia's rich coffee history. That same month, although unrelated, they also closed 600 stores in the United States.

The oldest educational institution still operating is Moroccan university!

The oldest educational institution still operating is Moroccan university!

Fatima al-Fihri founded the al-Karouine mosque in 859 in Fes, Morocco. The mosque also had associated schools.

The mosque and it's schools became one of the leading educational centers in the historic Muslim world.

The school remained in existence, and in 1963, the University of al-Karaouine was incorporated into Morocco's university system.

As such, it is the oldest continually operating educational system in the world (as confirmed by UNESCO and Guinness World Records).

Some also say that it is the world's oldest university but others say it can't technically be called a university since it formed outside the European model.
