Magnetic Puzzle Sign

This is a Christmas gift that I just finished for my 3yr old Grandson. The idea was to have it serve triple duty:

  1. A simple puzzle for him to play with.

  2. The backing can be used for dry-erase drawings when the pieces are removed.

  3. To hang on the wall/door of his room as a sign when not in use.

  4. A learning experience for me to try the scroll saw and get some idea of what intarsia might be like.

It started off as one of those magnetic dry-erase signs, a pattern, and some walnut and curly maple I had on-hand. The pieces have 3/8” rare-earth magnets inset into their backs so that they will stay when the unit is hung on the wall. The finish is a shellac and BLO sealer coat followed by about 4-6 coats of Minwax gloss wipe-on poly.

Overall, the project was a lot of fun to make. It was my first attempt at a scroll saw project and taught me that I have a LOT to learn. I definitely need to figure out how to cut the pieces more accurately for a consistent fit/gap between the species and refine my skills/process for rounding and shaping the pieces after they have been cut. It definitely piqued my interest in doing some more intarsia work in the future! :)

Thanks for looking. :)
