The original version of the film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was lost in a fire! How ironic. It was later found again in Norway.

The Passion of Joan of Arc is a silent French film produced in 1928, based on the actual record of the trial of Joan of Arc. The film, since the day it was released, has been regarded as a landmark film and one of the finest of its kind in cinema history.

Since its release, many different versions of the film have been released. Most of these new cuts were a result of government or church censorship. The original version was lost for decades after a fire destroyed the original master of the film, until one day the original film canisters turned up in an unlikely location.

In 1981, an employee of a mental institution in Oslo, Norway found several canisters of movie film in a janitor's closet. The canisters were sent to the Norwegian Film Institute where they were stored for three years before being examined. When they finally looked, they discovered that they had found the original cut of the film!

There weren't any records of the film being shipped to Oslo, but film historians believe that the director of an institution in Oslo might have requested for a special copy of the film because he was a historian.

Creativity : Color Hunting

Look around the room and try to find as many green things as you can. Plants, people's eyes and money are examples of things that might be green. This exercise helps you become more aware of your surroundings and helps improve your attention to details. If green is too easy for you, try combinations of colors. For example: objects with red and purple.

You can do this exercise whenever you are sitting around doing nothing, whether it's on the bus or in a waiting room. If you have a friend with you, make it a challenge to see who can find the most objects.

Memory : Walk Into a Room

If you have ever walked into a room and forgotten why you walked in there, you have experienced one of most common types of absentmindedness. If this happens to you, look around the room and see if something jogs your memory. Mentally retrace your steps and think about what you were doing when you decided to go into the room. If you still can't remember, go back to what you were doing. Frequently, when you stop trying to remember something it will pop right into your head.

To prevent this from happening in the future you can try two things. When you decide to go into another room, visualize yourself doing what you need to do, or tell yourself what you are going to do. For example, "I need to get my shoes." By doing either of these things you are ensuring that the task gets into your short-term memory.

When you are walking to the other room, try not to get distracted. This can delay you long enough for your short-term memory to forget what you need to do.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Enervate

en-er-vate

verb :: To lessen the vitality or strength of.

"The oppressive heat and lack of shade was enough to enervate us and make us want to go home."

The original Pinocchio ended with Pinocchio's death!

The original Pinocchio ended with Pinocchio's death!

Pinocchio is already a pretty dark movie for children. Little boys turn into donkeys and almost drown. Downright creepy. Apparently, it was supposed to be even creepier.

The book's author, Carlo Collodi, did not have or even particularly like children. Hence why all of his characters are disobedient and callous. In his original story, Pinocchio was killed by his enemies, the Fox and the Cat. They hung him from a tree.

A self proclaimed "Cookie Monster" stole a golden cookie and had a rather unusual ransom note! What did it say?

A German resident who goes by an alias that translates to "Cookie Monster" was on the run from authorities after he stole a 44-pound golden cookie! The cookie was on display at the Hannover headquarters of the world-famous biscuit maker Bahlsen, as it has been for the past century.

A ransom note was given to a local media outlet soon after the cookie went missing. The ransom note asked that the cookie company send milk chocolate cookies—not dark chocolate or cookies without chocolate—to the local children's hospital. If the company refused, the Cookie Monster claimed that the iconic golden cookie would "end up with Oscar the Grouch".

The company, after much debate, promised to donate 52,000 packages of biscuits to the children's hospital after the stolen cookie was returned. A few days later, the cookie was found wrapped in ribbon, hanging from a horse statue in another part of Hannover!

IMDB is one of the oldest websites on the internet, and has a fascinating origin story!

IMDB is one of the oldest websites on the internet, and has a fascinating origin story!

In 1989, a simple post was made on Usenet (an early precursor to the internet) and it was titled "Those Eyes". The list identified all the actresses with the most beautiful eyes, and the thread began to grow and grow, as threads do. It wasn't long before the thread expanded, and became known as "The List".

Around the same time, another project was launched where users were asked to rate movies on a scale from 1-10. Of course, this thread, just like the last one, began to grow exponentially.

In 1990, a man named Col Needham decided to combine both of those lists, and he began working on a series of other lists as well...which eventually totalled around 10,000 different lists. He then combined these lists into a database, and in 1993, he released his baby onto the World Wide Web. That website? The Internet Movie Database, aka IMDB.

Nearly 20 years later, the website is one of the top 50 most visited websites in the world.

After leaving office, President Truman lived on just $113 per month.

President Harry S. Truman never had it easy. He had only served as vice president for 85 days when President Roosevelt died. After that, Truman took over as president and had to lead the country through World War II.

After his presidency, Truman returned to his home in Independence, Missouri. Despite past precedent, Truman decided not to join the corporate world. He believed that accepting the money would lessen the integrity of the nation's highest office. However, he had no personal savings and only his old army pension to live off of—$112.56 per month.

North Koreans must have one of 28 state approved haircuts!

Considering North Korea's isolation, we can't be certain of some of the rumors we hear. There are some crazy ones flying around though. One is that North Korean citizens can only get one of 28 state approved haircuts.

Unmarried women must have short hair, but married woman have many more options, and while the hair of young men should be less than 2 inches long, older men can go as long as 2¾. I guess the North Koreans don't have the saying "long hair don't care".

In Kenya a turtle adopted a hippo that was abandoned after a tsunami.

In December 2004, a tsunami hit the coast of Kenya. In the aftermath, a hippo calf named Owen was stranded. A group of fishermen worked tirelessly to rescue him. They took him to the Haller Park nature preserve where he was adopted by a 130-year-old tortoise named Mzee.

The two animals soon became inseparable—they ate, played and swam together. They even developed a special communication system. Photos of the duo began to circulate and soon became international celebrities. Their friendship was turned into a children's book and is followed by millions around the world.

Since the 1990s, Carmel, Indiana has been replacing all signaled intersections with roundabouts

Roundabouts are popular in Europe and on the east coast, where they're often called rotaries. However, they have yet to really make their mark in the rest of the country. The town of Carmel, Indiana is currently leading the charge on bringing roundabouts to the midwest.

Since the 1990s, Carmel has been strategically replacing traffic lights with roundabouts. There are lots of benefits to this, including a gas savings of 24,000 gallons/year per roundabout; a construction costs savings of $125,000 per intersection; accidents with injuries have dropped by 80 percent and total accidents have dropped by 40 percent.
