The original Pinocchio ended with Pinocchio's death!

Pinocchio is already a pretty dark movie for children. Little boys turn into donkeys and almost drown. Downright creepy. Apparently, it was supposed to be even creepier.

The book's author, Carlo Collodi, did not have or even particularly like children. Hence why all of his characters are disobedient and callous. In his original story, Pinocchio was killed by his enemies, the Fox and the Cat. They hung him from a tree.
