The astronauts of Apollo 11 received a per diem of $8 a day for their mission to the moon!

The astronauts of Apollo 11 received a per diem of $8 a day for their mission to the moon!

The Apollo 11 mission was the first that landed on the moon. The astronauts that manned it were Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins.

They made history. The accomplished an amazing feat. They walked on the moon! They received fame, recognition and a place in the history books.

What they did not receive was a high salary or per diem. If you look at this mission like your typical business trip, the astronauts received just $8 per diem (or about $50 in today's money). And deductions were made from this because the spaceship provided accommodations - no need to look for a hotel in outer space!

Their salary was also fairly low for their accomplishments. They were paid about $17,000 per year (or about $100,000 today). While a substantial amount, it does not reflect the men's huge accomplishments or education.

Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Oct 31, 2013)

Cartoon and Animated Characters III

How well do you know your cartoon and animated characters from TV shows and movies? I'll give you a description. See if you can match it up with the correct name. For those characters who may not be well known, I have also included what cartoon, show, or movie they are from. Good luck and have fun!

Take the Quiz at Braingle.com

Creativity : Icebreaker: Mixed Phrase

Icebreakers are little exercises that help relax tension and loosen up a formal atmosphere in a meeting where you want creative ideas and group participation.

In this icebreaker, one person is sent out of the room. The rest of the people pick a common phrase, movie title, or quote. Split up the phrase so each person in the room gets a word. For the phrase "A rolling stone gathers no moss," one person would get the word "rolling," someone else would get "stone," and so on. You can omit the little words such as a, in, it, the, etc.

Now, invite the person back into the room. They can then ask people questions, such as "What color is your hair?" The person must answer the question and incorporate their secret word. For example, if your word was 'rolling' you might say, "Well, I was rolling down the street in my car when I noticed in the rearview mirror that I had a grey hair, but normally it's brown." Be creative! The question-asker must figure out the original phrase by deciphering which words are assigned to each player.

Memory : Phonetic System Practice

We have learned how the Phonetic Mnemonic System can be used to remember words, concepts, dates, numbers, and more. The only drawback to this system is that it takes a little time to learn. Let's practice! If you need to look at the chart a few times, go ahead.

Translate these numbers into their equivalent phonetic words:

99 = puppy

8 = ?

92 = ?

334 = ?

70 = ?

73914 = ?

Now, translate the following words into their equivalent numbers:

Try = 14

Meadow = ?

Lodge = ?

Practice = ?

Elbow = ?

Chocolate = ?

(Answers: Fee, piano, memory, kiss, computer, 31, 56, 94710, 59, 6751)

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Volubility

vol-u-bil-i-ty

noun :: Marked by a ready flow of speech. Fluent.

"The activity of his pen was only second to the volubility of his tongue."

Operating a US aircraft carrier costs over $7 million per day!

Operating a US aircraft carrier costs over $7 million per day!

Military equipment is expensive. It should be. It's highly advanced and helps keep us safe. Sometimes, it's so expensive, it's tough to believe though.

The Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers are a new class of aircraft carrier for the United States Navy. They are meant to replace the current Nimitz-class carriers.

These carriers feature new and improved technology such as the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System.

They also have more efficient automation so they reduce the required crew members by a few hundred. And they have a more sophisticated nuclear reactor design that produces more power.

Pretty impressive huh? It should be considering how much it costs to build and operate. One Ford-class aircraft carrier costs about $9 billion to build. And once it is built, it costs around $7 million per day to operate!

There was once a campaign to ban Minesweeper!

There was once a campaign to ban Minesweeper!

Minesweeper is a computer game that almost every one has played, but not many people understand.

The reason so many people have played the game is because the game comes installed on every windows computer for free. Well, 'free' if you don't count the cost of the computer. If you count the cost of the computer, you're paying a hefty price for a really basic game.

One of the reasons Minesweeper became so popular is because of how difficult the game is. It is quite the accomplishment to beat a game of Minesweeper on the highest difficulty.

However, few people are aware that in 2001, a campaign was led to have the game banned!

The International Campaign to Ban Winmine was led because certain people felt that the game was insensitive to people who were victims in mine fields, and people who actually had to clear minefields for a living.

As a result, Microsoft offered alternative versions of Minesweeper where the mines are replaced with flowers!

Most of Mel Brooks movies in Sweden are named “Springtime for…” because The Producers was so successful!

Most of Mel Brooks movies in Sweden are named “Springtime for…” because The Producers was so successful!

"The Producers" was released in 1968. Considering its plot - a theatrical producer and an accountant plan to swindle investors by producing a play about Hitler that is sure to flop - it's not surprising that it received mixed reviews.

Some thought it was entirely inappropriate to treat Hitler in such a light-hearted way. However, Mel Brooks, who also directed the film, won an Academy Award for the screenplay.

In Sweden, it was a huge hit. There, it was called "Springtime for Hitler," the name of the play being produced in the film. Since it was so successful, all subsequent Mel Brooks films released in Sweden had a similar title.

For example, "Spaceballs" was "Springtime for Space." "Blazing Saddles" was "Springtime for the Sheriff." And "Young Frankenstein" was "Springtime for Frankenstein." Interesting technique.

After a long day working on Toy Story 2, an animator came back to his car to realize he’d left his baby in the back seat the whole day!

After a long day working on Toy Story 2, an animator came back to his car to realize he’d left his baby in the back seat the whole day!

Good things take time, great things take even longer. This statement proves true when it comes to Pixar and their many animated films that became a key component in so many children's lives.

We all know and love Toy Story, but not all of us know Toy Story 2. While it was still a great sequel, it took a lengthy amount of time to make.

In fact, Pixar became displeased with the speed of production, so they replaced one of the producers with another who tried to kick-start the animators progress on the film!

Although Pixar claims they discouraged long hours at the office, many animators felt the pressure to perform as the deadlines for the film were difficult to make.

These deadlines were so difficult, that many workers worked long hours at the office. These hours were so long that some animators developed carpal tunnel syndrome, and one animator forgot that he left his baby in the back seat of his car!

The animator who had dedicated all of his mental power to thinking about Toy Story 2, forgot to drop his baby off at day care in the morning.

Although a fellow employee realized his mistake before it was too late, it was becoming all too clear that Pixar employees were working a little bit too hard!

There’s a word to describe the “spiteful behavior” of inanimate objects!

There’s a word to describe the “spiteful behavior” of inanimate objects!

Have you ever thought that an inanimate object was plotting against you? If you have, you might be a little bit delusional.

Or , on the odd chance that you think that the inanimate object world isn't out to get you - you have experience resistentialism.

Chances are you have never heard this word before. If you haven't, memorize it. It's good to expand your vocabulary on a day to day basis! Resistentialism defined as the 'seemingly spiteful behaviour shown by inanimate objects'!

A perfect example of resistentialism would be all of the little things that happen on a day to day basis that drive you mad! One of these things may include misplacing your keys.

Resistentialism was a phrase coined by Paul Jennings to describe the every day battle between man and...well...an inanimate object.
