In each sentence below, the name of a fruit is hidden. Each of these fruits end with the word ‘berry’. You won’t find the word ‘berry’ itself hidden there of course, but try to find the missing part of each fruit to give it its full name.

1. He looked blue in the face from too much exposure to the freezing cold outside.

2. Boys, enter at your own risk!

3. We have a beautiful farm out in the countryside and we own a few goats, duck and one goose.

Creativity : Defer Judgment

Deferring judgment is an important rule for brainstorming sessions, and it’s just as important for working with your own ideas. If you judge an idea too quickly, you will reject many ideas that have real potential. Early ideas are easy to reject because they are imperfect, but they can be improved and embellished. Sometimes the best ideas come from combining parts of several imperfect ideas.

If you feel yourself jumping to judge or reject an idea (either your idea or someone else’s idea), take a moment and allow yourself to recognize that not all ideas spring forth from the mind in perfect order.

As we have learned, events with emotional significance get preferential treatment by the hippocampus and are more likely to make strong memories. The most important way that emotions are created is from interactions with other people.

Modern technology is constantly reducing the social interactions that we have on a daily basis. Drive-through pickup, self-checkout lines, Internet shopping and email are examples of ways that today’s technology isolates us from face-to-face interactions with other people. Humans are social beings, and social interactions are required for good mental health. Several studies have shown that people with social lifestyles have stronger cognitive function than people who are reclusive. Social ties can also help one deal with life’s stressful events.

Try to get in touch with more people. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you on the bus, or the checkout person at the store. In addition to the mental benefit, you will be making the other person’s day a little more interesting.

More than $200 million in US currency was burned at both a crematorium and the Aiea Sugar Mill in Hawaii, due to being redeemed for HAWAII Overprint Notes – a series of banknotes issued during World War II as an emergency issue after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The intent of the overprints was to easily distinguish US currency captured by Japanese forces in the event of an invasion of Hawaii and render the bills useless.
