Today's Daily Brain Teaser (May 14, 2014)

Lines

Birbal was jester, counselor, and fool to the great Moghul emperor, Akbar. The villagers loved to talk of Birbal's wisdom and cleverness, and the emperor loved to try to outsmart him. One day Akbar (emperor) drew a line across the floor. "Birbal," he ordered, "you must make this line shorter, but you cannot erase any bit of it."

Everyone present thought the emperor had finally outsmarted Birbal. It was clearly an impossible task. Yet within moments the emperor and everyone else present had to agree that Birbal had made the line shorter without erasing any of it. How could this be?

Check Braingle.com for the answer.

Hungry Soldier Optical Illusion

On Saturday, I posted an optical illusion about a giant on the beach eating people. A lot of you really liked this optical illusion and some of you even said that you would like to go to the beach and recreate this illusion on your own. Honestly, I don’t even remember seeing a single negative comment about this illusion, so I’m pretty happy about that. I like it when I can post up illusions that you’re all happy with with. If you want to check out the illusion I’m referring to, you can click here. If you want, you can leave a comment or a rating and let me know what you think. :)

Today, I have another new optical illusion that is somewhat similar to the giant on the beach optical illusion. This one, however, involves a soldier and he’s certainly worked up an appetite. Scroll down below to see what I mean.

Hungry Soldier Optical Illusion

Now that’s what I call an M.R.E. (meal ready to eat.) I hope you all enjoy this optical illusion as much as you did the giant on the beach illusion.

Want to see another cool optical illusion for today? If so, check out this optical illusion and see if you can spot the mistake.

Brain Teaser 5/13/2014

It's About Time

1. If 2 hours ago it was as long after one o’clock in the afternoon as it was before one o’clock in the morning. What time would it be now?

2. It was the middle of the winter in Scandinavia, and the poor boy, sick with a cold, was lying in bed. He woke up in the night, but he knew that the night lasted from 3:00 P.M. to 9:00 A.M. at that time of year. The boy wearily glanced at his clock and, thinking it said 4:42, buried his head back in the pillow. But as he fell asleep he realized he hadn't distinguished the hour hand from the minute hand. If it wasn't 4:42 in the morning, what other time (or times) could it have been?

Chinese artist He Yunchang believes in suffering for his art…

He-Yunchang-cropped Chinese artist He Yunchang believes in suffering for his art. His performance pieces have included:

  • Having one of his ribs removed so that he could wear it as a necklace.

  • Having a doctor cut a one meter gash down the side of his body, without anesthesia.

  • Encasing himself in a cube of quick-setting concrete for 24 hours.

  • Trying to “cut a river in half” by suspending himself above it from a crane while holding a knife in the water, as blood dripped from cuts in his arms.

  • Painting the fingernails and toenails of 10 mannequins with his own blood.

  • Staring at 10,000 watt bulbs to damage his eyesight

  • Burning his clothes while wearing them.

Art critic Judith Neilson explains:

He Yunchang is an alchemist of pain… He Yunchang evidently believes that pain and extreme discomfort, deliberately planned and willingly undergone, have a transcendent quality — and that it is this quality that raises mere action to the level of art. [His performances] serve as silent rebukes to contemporary Chinese society, where people undergo all kinds of suffering for money precisely because they see money as the ultimate protection against suffering.
