Creativity : Opposite Point of View

People tend to quickly classify a situation, which causes us to think and respond to it in predictable ways. A creative thinker will think about situations from different angles. Try this exercise to think of these situations from the opposite point of view.

1. You favorite coffee mug just broke. List five good things about that.

2. You have just won big on a slot machine in Vegas. List five reasons why this is bad.

3. Your flight home for the holidays was just canceled. List five reasons why you should be glad.

4. Your son just got straight As on his report card. List five reasons why you should be upset.

Memory : Story Mnemonic System

The Story System is similar to the Link System and will help you remember items in order. To use this system, you need to create a little story using each item on your list.

For example, take the list: clown, banana, giraffe, and moon. Your story might be, "A clown slipped on a banana and startled a giraffe. The giraffe jumped over the moon and ran away." It's easier to remember this short story than it is to remember the list of words without any associations.

Compared to the Link System, this system may make it easier to recall the information later, but it is less effective for longer lists of items because it's difficult to work subsequent items into a meaningful story. However, the story system works better with abstract words that are hard to visualize by themselves.

More Cubes

More Cubes

Once again a game/puzzle from the past. This one is at least 100 years old. 27 cubes glued together to form 7 different shapes. 6 are made from 4 cubes and are the only 6 shapes that can be made to fit inside the 3×3 cube. the last one is a simple ell made from 3 cubes.

First pic shows the pieces, second shows the assembled 3×3 cube. The rest of the pics show other things to build.

A nice way to use scraps, and give the grandkids a fit.
