One of Superman's powers is turning people black!

One of Superman's powers is turning people black!

Lois Lane became so popular in the Superman comics that in March of 1958 they started running her own series.

Superman’s Girl Friend ran for 137 issues and lasted until September 1974. Girl Friend Volume 1, issue number 106 was written by Robert Kanigher.

In this issue, Lois is sent to the black community to do a story, which could be the story of her life. She heads down there only to be ignored by the children in the community.

She tries another approach by talking to some of the adults only to be ignored again.

She did come across one elderly woman who spoke with her; only to find out she was blind. She heads back and Superman helps her transform into a black woman but unsure of the lasting effect of her new appearance.

Lois goes back to the community to be welcomed with open arms. When she spots a man in trouble and goes to his aid. She sees that he was only trying to do good for others.

Lois then returns to her original form and visits the man in the hospital. After some uncertainty about her identity the man realizes who she is and then accepts her for who she is.

Today's Daily Brain Teaser (Dec 11, 2013)

Drugging

Mr. Jones filed a lawsuit against the company he worked for. He claimed that the company he worked for was drugging him to make him a better worker. He claimed that the coffee the company provided contained a drug called Trimethylxanthine. Trimethylxanthine is an addictive drug that increases alertness, improves concentration, and gives you a euphoric feeling. It operates using the same mechanisms that amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin use to stimulate the brain only to a lesser degree. When the coffee was tested it was found that it did contain large amounts of Trimethylxanthine. But, Mr. Jones did not win his lawsuit. Why?

Check Braingle.com for the answer.

Creativity : Engineering Challenge : The Bridge

Engineering challenges are fun activities that are frequently assigned to students in physics or engineering classes, but they can easily be used outside of these venues. An engineering challenge usually has a simple goal and some rules about what sorts of materials you are allowed to use. These are great ways to get people thinking creatively and to foster teamwork and competition. Try an engineering challenge at a birthday party, office outing, scout meeting, or any other gathering where you want to have fun and encourage creativity.

In The Bridge challenge, each team is given some building materials such as glue, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, or small pieces of wood. Each team should get the same amount of materials. The goal is to build a bridge that can span a 24-inch distance and support increasing amounts of weight. The bridge that can support the most weight before breaking is the winner.

Memory : Learning Context

If you find that you cannot remember the answer to a question that you know you studied, try to imagine the place where you learned it. If you studied the material in the library, imagine the library. Try to recreate the entire context of where and how you learned the material: visualize the book, even the page where you found the material. Were there any diagrams on that page? What time of day were you studying the material?

Since the mind connects information in all sorts of ways, the contextual cues will give you a better chance at recalling what you learned.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Gossamer

gos-sa-mer

adj :: Sheer, light, delicate, or tenuous.

"You can see through the gossamer wings of the butterfly."

Which Nobel Prize winner drove Andre The Giant to school?

Which Nobel Prize winner drove Andre The Giant to school?

We all know Andre the Giant for what he is known for-well-being Huge! He was also a wrester. The man didn’t get his name for no reason.

At the tender age of 12 he weighted well over 200lbs and he measured 6’3”. Early on in his life his gigantism showed. By the time he died in 1993, Andre was 7’4”.

Needless to say, most things kids did normally weren’t as easy for the French born giant. Say like, taking the bus to school for instance.

Andre was much too big to fight and he needed a way to get back and forth. Problem solved when his father was repaid by a man named Samuel Beckett.

Mr. Beckett is a well-known novelist and poet, among other things; his writing style is more of the tragic comedy of human ways. Samuel’s writing did earn him a Nobel Prize in 1969 and he is also on the list of the 20th century influential writers.

How did the two meet? Well, a man by the name of Boris Roussimouff was one of the locals on the job to building Mr. Beckett’s cottage in France. They got to talking and Samuel offered as repayment he would take Andre to school in his truck.

Russia has a big alcoholism problem. Here's how the government is trying to reduce it.

Seems like alcoholism is still on the rise in Russia and they will do what ever it takes to keep it under control.

The country has always had drinking problems and over the years they have tried to make some changes. Maybe now things will start to change.

Normally vodka is 125 roubles and will now climb to 170 roubles, which is $5.56 in the U.S.

These prices are for the cheaper bottles, and as the size of the bottle increases, as will the price.

Vodka prices aren’t the only ones going up, brandy prices will also increase accordingly.

It might not matter, though. Research has shown that no matter what the prices are, people will still go to get their drink on. Russia has the second highest increase in drinkers in the last fifteen years with Estonia coming first.

Russia also has one of the highest binge drinking rates in the world. And if it isn’t enough, alcohol related deaths are also high in Russia due to their over drinking.

This is the second time in 2012 that they raised the prices. The country is sticking firm to cutting out the bad drinking habits of it's people. But is it going to be enough?

Sadam Hussein bankrolled this Canadian man's project. You won't believe how crazy and dangerous it was.

Gerald Vincent Bull was a Canadian engineer who developed long-range artillery.

He moved from project to project in his quest to economically launch a satellite using a huge artillery piece, to which end he designed the Project Babylon "supergun" for the Iraqi government.

He specialized in ballistics and throughout his life he was designing a super cannon to cheaply shoot objects into orbit. Canada and the United States cancelled the joint project.

While devastated that his dream would never be seen, he was approached by another financial backer: Saddam Hussein.

Project Babylon was a project with unknown objectives commissioned by the then Iraqi president Saddam Hussein to build a series of 'superguns'.

The design was based on research from the 1960s Project HARP led by Gerald Bull. There were most likely four different devices in the program.

The project began in 1988; it was halted in 1990 after Gerald Bull was assassinated, and parts of these superguns were seized in transit around Europe.

The components that remained in Iraq were destroyed by the United Nations after the 1991 Gulf War.
