Creativity : Engineering Challenge : Paper Boat

Engineering challenges are fun activities that are frequently assigned to students in physics or engineering classes, but they can easily be used outside of these venues. An engineering challenge usually has a simple goal and some rules about what sorts of materials you are allowed to use. These are great ways to get people thinking creatively and to foster teamwork and competition. Try an engineering challenge at a birthday party, office outing, scout meeting, or any other gathering where you want to have fun and exercise your creativity.

In the Paper Boat challenge, participants are asked to make a boat out of paper and a small amount of tape, glue or staples. Everyone should be using the same amount of materials. Each boat will be required to hold a small cargo (marbles, pencils, or little toy figurines work nicely). The boat that remains floating the longest is the winner. A variation of this challenge is to allow teams to use as much or as little paper as they want, but have a heavier cargo (a baseball or book). The lightest boat that can float the cargo for 1 minute is the winner.

The cerebellum is a small section of the brain that sits in back, next to where the spinal cord attaches to the brain. Although the cerebellum constitutes only about 10% of the brain by volume, it contains nearly 80% of the brain’s neurons. This part of the brain is especially important for the integration of sensory perception and motor output. The cerebellum monitors the position of the body and communicates with the motor cortex to fine-tune the signals sent to the muscles. People who have damage to their cerebellum show problems with coordination and movement. The cerebellum is also important for the cognitive functions of attention, language, music and other sensory tasks.

Stacked Block Optical Illusion

I’m in the mood for a classic optical illusion today. Anyone else? That’s a little easier said than done on here, though, since we’ve already featured pretty much all of the classic optical illusions out there, like the blivet and the Penrose triangle.

With a website that’s been up as long as this one, it’s a bit difficult to find new and interesting optical illusions that haven’t been featured before. Some days, I must admit, I grasp at straws a bit to find new optical illusions.

Every day, though, I search far and wide for new optical illusions that you guys will love. Some days I get lucky, and some days I don’t.

Today, however, I’m hoping I got lucky!

Here’s a new optical illusion that I’m hoping will appease the masses. Well, it’s new to me anyway, and hopefully new to you.

This optical illusion is similar to the blivet, or devil’s fork, optical illusion. These types of optical illusions feature an impossible object with a certain number of prongs on one end that transform to a fewer number of prongs on the other end.

Today’s optical illusion features a stack of blocks. If you count the ends of the blocks where they’re overlapping, it looks as if there are two on each side. However, when you count the other ends of the blocks, it looks like there are actually three blocks on each side.
