It's possible to walk to any point in the Pentagon in seven minutes!

It's possible to walk to any point in the Pentagon in seven minutes!

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense and is one of the most mysterious buildings in the country. Construction began for the building in 1941 and finished in 1943.

The building spans 28.7 acres and has an additional 5.1 acres of courtyard in the center. The design is highly intricate with concentric rings moving out from the center.

Each ring has a specific function and the rooms closer to the outside are generally saved for higher officials so they have an outside view.

The building was specifically designed for information to travel quickly from point to point. Should electricity or phone service go out, the building was purposely planned to allow a person to get to any point within seven minutes!

Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Nov 20, 2013)

Celebrity Challenge: Music Edition

The names we often know celebrities by are not their birth names. Movie stars, singers, and even presidents, have changed their birth names when they became well known. The information contained in this quiz are hints, not actual facts. The names, however, have not been changed to protect the innocent. How well do you know your celebrities?

Stress : Rewind and Fast-forward

When you are under stress try this short exercise to put things in perspective. It might make your problem seem less stressful.

Mentally rewind your life ten years and remember what you were like at that time. Try to imagine how your current problem would have seemed back then. Would it have been as important? Now fast-forward ten years into the future and imagine how your life might be like. How important is your current problem to your future self? Chances are your current problem may seem insignificant to your future self and this might change your perspective on how you view your problem today.

Memory : Routines

Most of us go through our daily lives with fairly fixed routines. We get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, and drive to work the same way every day. This isn't necessarily bad because it allows our brains to slowly speed up to meet the day, but it also doesn't give our brains any exercise. Since these routine tasks are carried out almost subconsciously, the brain uses almost no energy and makes no new associations or neural connections.

Even activities like doing the laundry or walking the dog can be so routine that you hardly even think about doing them. Each activity is a chance to give your brain some exercise and get it actually thinking. Try to add some surprise or novelty into daily activities. For example, drive to work using a different route. This will prevent you from going on auto-pilot and getting to work without thinking about how you got there. The new path will provide new and interesting things to see which will stimulate your mind and make new associations.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Hortative

hor-ta-tive

adj :: Giving exhortation or strong urging. Advisory.

"The hortative speech got the troops ready for battle."

No one in Australia has died from a Spider bite since 1981!

Australia is very famous because of it's dangerous animals that can be found throughout the country.

They do have a lot of dangerous and poisonous animals; however most of them are easily avoided with a little common sense. Most do not live in cities, and types of animals vary depending on which part of Australia you go to.

Remember that Australia is a huge country; they have variations in climate and habitat. They also do get snow in many places each winter. Anyway, most of Australians manage to live there relatively incident-free.

For instance, no one has died from a Spider bite ever since 1981! Ever since anti-venoms were introduced, the fatality rate has diminished to practically zero.

There's a DNA mutation that makes you immune to the plague and HIV!

There's a DNA mutation that makes you immune to the plague and HIV!

People can be infected with many different bacteria and viruses, but some people get sicker from these bugs than others. Do our genes cause some of that difference?

The answer is yes, different versions of important genes change how easy it is for a person to be infected. The study of these genes might lead to new drugs to block or slow down an infection.

There are people that are naturally immune to many diseases, for example, people that lack a protein called CCR5, a protein that is needed to open a door in our cells that allows the HIV go in, are naturally immune to it.

People inherit this gene from both parents and it can only be found in 1 % of Caucasians.

The Orion Nebula is the only nebula visible from Earth with the naked eye

The Orion Nebula is the only nebula visible from Earth with the naked eye

The Orion Nebula is a diffuse nebula situated south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky.

A nebula is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and otherionized gases. The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features.

The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust.

Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizingeffects of massive nearby stars in the nebula.

Orion’s nebula might hold the answer for many of the millions of questions about the universe.

Whole House Remodel #3: Large home made moldings

Here are a few pictures, from the past couple of days, of the sequence of making moldings and of them put up. I don’t know how large fancy moldings are made but this was my solution to doing it. The ogee’s are made with one router bit then stacked on top of each other. The large partial cove moldings are made with Rockler’s table saw crown molding maker. It is a nicely made jig that lets you set up your table saw to cut into wood using the round blade to gouge out a large cove in a board. Cut the inside curve down the middle and you’ve got two tall coves.

I’m sure this thing isn’t officially made this way, but not knowing how it’s done it was a problem to solve. Lot’s of fun, lots of work for sure.

.

The drawn and assembled jigsaw puzzle profile of the molding.

.

All of the moldings cut, ready to glue together

.

The top and lower molding glued up. Notice the plywood filler piece in the top molding.

.

put together as they’ll be stacked when put up.

.

I sprayed them with poly to match the cabinets I had made previously. Here’s two views of them up. from the left and right. New light over the sink too. LED…. takes just a few watts, very bright, and will last 22,000 hrs. Slowly converting to almost all LED with a few CFL’s.

Anyone know what style this would be called? Or does it even fit into a style category?

.

Eventually there will be a carved sort of medallion that will go on the flat spot between the moldings over the sink.

There are reports of a UFO spaceship battle in 1561 Germany!

There are reports of a UFO spaceship battle in 1561 Germany!

The 1561 celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg was a mass sighting of celestial phenomena or unidentified flying objects (UFO) above Nuremberg,Germany.

The phenomenon has been interpreted by some modern UFO enthusiasts as an aerial battle, possibly of extraterrestrial origin.

Around dawn on April 4, 1561, residents of Nuremberg saw what they described as an aerial battle, followed by the appearance of a large black triangular object and then a large crash outside of the city.

According to witnesses, there were hundreds of spheres, cylinders and other odd-shaped objects that moved erratically overhead.

Objects of various shapes including crosses, spears, discs, a crescent, and a tubular object from which several smaller, round objects emerged and darted around the sky at dawn were described.
