The world’s shortest commercial flight lasts 2 minutes!

Papa Westray, one of the Orkney Islands in Scotland, has a population of 70 and is home to the record of the world's shortest regular commercial flight.

If you're familiar with the Orkney Islands, you might know that Orkney Ferries are somewhat more popular (and practical) transportation forms for travelling between certain islands.

Loganair, a Scottish airline, operates Britten-Norman Islanders that fly from Papa Westray Airport to Westray and Kirkwall.

The flights from Papa Westray to Westray is the world's shortest scheduled flight, at around 2 minutes.

There are ferries from Papa Westray to Westray, though they are slightly longer.

Westray has a population of 550, and its main industries are fishing, fish farming, and cattle farming.

The island is also notable for its plan to make the island self sufficient with renewable energy by the end of 2012.

Today's Daily Brain Teaser (Nov 18, 2013)

Faults of Technology

I have a common English phrase. I feed this phrase into a computer translation program. This translates it into a foreign language then back into English again. Unfortunately, because computers do not understand idiom and sarcasm, the phrase has been changed. It now reads:

BLIND, INSANITY.

What was the original phrase?

Check Braingle.com for the answer.

Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Nov 18, 2013)

Song: "My Girl"

Written and produced by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, "My Girl" was a number one hit for The Temptations.

Stress : Export Worries

Most people worry about future events that may or may not happen. This expectation of something bad happening causes people stress even though the thing may never occur. One helpful technique for reducing worry is to export your worries to a notebook or diary.

Suppose you can't get to sleep because you are worrying about a meeting with your boss later in the week. Pick up your notebook and write down that worry. Now, set a time in the future and promise yourself that at that time you will review what you are worrying about and make a decision. This should help resolve the present worry and put it off to the designated time. An added benefit of this is that during the interim, your subconscious mind will have time to process the problem and come up with potential solutions. This is very similar to how the 'Letter to Yourself' technique works.

Memory : Strong Associations

Previously we learned how the mind makes associations between all the different sensory inputs as well as emotional states and social triggers. You can use this to your advantage when you want to be sure to remember something. Most people rely almost exclusively on their senses of sight and hearing. Try to get your sense of smell, touch, or taste into the memory, or pay attention to your emotional state. A memory that involves four senses will be much stronger than a memory that involves only two. The more associations you have for a particular memory, the more protection you have against losing it, and the more ways you will have to remember it later.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Vitiate

vi-ti-ate

verb :: To make faulty or defective. To impair the quality.

"An error could be so serious as to vitiate the entire report."

There is a real life version of Walter White from Breaking Bad!

There is a real life version of Walter White from Breaking Bad!

Breaking Bad is one of the greatest television series that has ever existed. Walter White surely knew how to win everybody’s heart with his life-story and his fascination with chemistry and the blue crystal meth.

Most of us wonder how Vince Gilligan came up with such a perfect series, involving everything from drama to action and thus creating one of the tensest environments that has ever existed in a series with so much thriller.

However, there is a real life case of a man, whose life was pretty much just like Walter White’s. Stephen Doran, a 57 year old school teacher and former legislator battling stage three cancer, was caught trafficking meth resulting in an extremely similar story to AMCs series, Breaking Bad.

If you think Walter White was a total badass, respect for Stephen Doran! The real life version of Breaking Bad.

Sleeping Beauty was raped in the original story!

Sleeping Beauty was raped in the original story!

Most people don't know how different modern day fairy tales are to the originals they are derived from.

Original versions often include murder, incest, and gruesome punishment.

The earliest form of Sleeping Beauty that we have is from an Italian poet named Giambattista Basile, and in the story Sleeping Beauty is poisoned and left for dead in the forest.

She is then found by a nobleman who rapes her, and only wakes up during labor nine months later to twins! Luckily Disney changed this part to a kiss.

When you snap your fingers, the noise doesn’t come from your fingers!

When you snap your fingers, the noise doesn’t come from your fingers!

The noise you hear when you snap is not from your two fingers like most believe, but actually your finger slapping your palm.

There's a faint whisking noise from the friction when your fingers rub together, but the sound associated with a snap is from your palm.

Rubbing your two fingers together in preparation of a snap builds up force that is released when your finger strikes your palm, making the snapping noise.

Try putting a tissue or padding on your palm and the noise will be substantially diminished!

Google is trying to find a way to help people prevent traffic jams by giving different directions to its users!

Google is trying to find a way to help people prevent traffic jams by giving different directions to its users!

Google Maps is a web mapping service application and technology provided by Google, that powers many map-based services, including the Google Maps website, Google Ride Finder, Google Transit, and maps embedded on third-party websites via the Google Maps API.

It offers street maps and a route planner for traveling by foot, car, bike (beta), or with public transportation.

It also includes a locator for urban businesses in numerous countries around the world. Google Maps satellite images are not updated in real time; rather they are several months or years old.

Good Guy Google gets it's traffic data from Android users on the roads and is considering ways to prevent traffic jams by giving different directions to different users.

In other words, Google will soon be able to help you to get to school and/or work in time! Thanks Google!

A group of highschoolers formed a large drug smuggling operation with the help of a teacher!

A group of highschoolers formed a large drug smuggling operation with the help of a teacher!

Lou Villar was just a high school Spanish Teacher at a high school in Coronado, California.

However, he would become the head of one of the most elaborate drug smuggling organizations in the West Coast during the 1970's! The reason Lou Villar's drug ring is so unique, is because he used students to help him run the business!

The story begins in the summer of 1969, as most great stories do, when a group of students wanted to start making some extra cash with some good ole' fashioned drug smuggling.

According to a journalistic report written by Joshuah Berman, one of the students came up to transport bundles of miarjuna from Tijuana to get them into California. Lou Villar essentially acted as a mentor to the students!

The full 30,000 word journal, which is being made into a major motion picture possibly starring Geroge Clooney, can be purhcased for $2.99! Click the source to get your copy!

A new £2000 procedure TATTOOS a buzz cut into bald men!

A new £2000 procedure TATTOOS a buzz cut into bald men!

A company called HIS (Hair-Ink-Skin) has developed an interesting way for bald men to regain their hair.

Instead of expensive plugs, or fake looking toupes, they came up with a very natural looking solution. A tattooed-in buzz cut.

It's called Micro Hair Technique, and it took the creators years to develop.

The way they do it is by mixing and matching different shades of ink to replicate the look, size and shape of micro hairs in men's heads.

The three men on the right have had the procedure done. Because the procedure costs many many times less than something like a hair transplant (which can cost up to £25000) MHT is becoming really popular.

They've now opened locations in the United States. What do you think? Does it look natural enough? Would you get it?
