Video: So You Need to Talk: Doctor Who

I can't imagine anyone who visits this blog need this video, but it's funny to watch someone try to sum up fifty years of a fandom in five minutes. When you stop to think about it, the premise of Doctor Who sounds completely ridiculous to a newcomer. Having been a fan of the series since almost before I could read, I tend to forget that.

Lecture: What Does The Doctor Mean to You?

"11 different doctors have played the role over the past 50 years, and each was unique, with different personalities and characteristics. But besides the physical symbols surrounding him - the Tardis, the sonic screwdriver- are there larger cues that indicate the man is in fact THE DOCTOR?"

The Miami Heat gave out 8,000 fortune cookies to promote Yao Ming's first game there!

The Miami Heat gave out 8,000 fortune cookies to promote Yao Ming's first game there!

One of the few famous Chinese basketball players, Yao Ming was the tallest active player in the NBA at 7 feet six inches at the time of retirement!

Born in Shanghai at 11 pounds, over double the average Chinese baby’s weight, Ming’s parents were both basketball players.

In 2002 Ming came to Miami for the first time to play the Heat, and to increase attention for the game 8,000 fortune cookies were passed out!

Offensive? Apparently only to Americans who thought so because Ming said he didn’t mind and had never heard of a fortune cookie, thinking it was a strange American thing.

This event was only eclipsed by Shaquille O’Neal later saying, “Tell Yao Ming, Ching chong-yang-wah-ah-soh!”

A man has created a software that writes its own books!

A man has created a software that writes its own books!

Think if for any writing assignment for school you could simply type the topic into a software and it would shoot out a finished copy.

Would you buy it? Besides potentially ruining any trace of literary creativity in the next generation, this program actually has amazing benefits!

Philip M. Parker created a computer system that writes books in about 20 minutes. He patented an algorithm that makes a formula for the book, pulls information from a plethora of sources, and then puts in into logical sense!

So far hundreds of thousands of books are attributed to Parker, yet he is not so much an author as someone who puts material together.

So far he sticks to mostly factual works, such as business catalogues and technical reports, yet he has said his next endeavor will be a romance novel!

The legend of King Arthur pulling the sword comes from the way swords were cast in the Bronze Age!

The legend of King Arthur pulling the sword comes from the way swords were cast in the Bronze Age!

Bronze Age swords appear from around the 17th century BC, in the Black Sea region and the Aegean, evolving out of the dagger. They are replaced by the Iron Age sword during the early part of the 1st millennium BC.

From an early time the swords reach lengths in excess of 100 cm. The technology to produce blades of such lengths appears to have been developed in the Aegean, using alloys of copper and tin or arsenic, around 1700 BC.

The Bronze Age method of casting a sword in a stone mold is probably the source of the literary and romantic images in the Arthurian legends that depict Arthur pulling the sword from the stone to become king.

Bob Dylan's only commercial work is ladies' underwear!

Bob Dylan's only commercial work is ladies' underwear!

Bob Dylan is an American musician, singer-songwriter, artist, and writer. He has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades.

Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he was an informal chronicler and a seemingly reluctant figurehead of social unrest.

In 1965, Bob Dylan said that if he ever sold out to a commercial interest, it would be "ladies garments." In 2007, he and his music appeared in a Victoria's Secret commercial.

A real man always stays truth to his words, and this man has proved that his promises are sacred. If you’d like to see the commercial, check it out at the source link!

NASA named a treadmill after Stephen Colbert!

NASA named a treadmill after Stephen Colbert!

Besides being a political satirist, writer, comedian, television host, and actor, Stephen Colbert knows how to get involved with the greatest powers of the World and leave his mark behind.

Believe it or not, Stephen Colbert is a big fan of NASA. He is in fact a big fan, so big that he found a way for NASA to name one of their properties after him!

In 2009 Stephen Colbert won a NASA competition to have a module of the ISS named after him, but NASA opted to name it ‘Tranquility’ instead. They did, however, name a treadmill on the ISS after him. It is called the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (C.O.L.B.E.R.T).

Australia's largest petition (792k signatures) was to protest the rise in beer prices!

Australia and it's many wonders; Australia is not only home to the most dangerous animals in the World, they are also home to many beer loving fans!

Since 2008 an average of about 140 unique petitions have been presented each year. Since 1988, when the number of signatures was first recorded, the petition with the greatest number of signatures was one presented on 4 December 2000 concerning taxation and beer prices, with 792,985 signatures.

There has never been a petition with so many signatures in Australia’s history ever! Australians surely knew how to unite and fight against the rise of their so loving product. I wonder how long it took them to collect so many signatures?

When Socrates was found guilty of corrupting youth, he suggested his punishment be free dinners for life!

When Socrates was found guilty of corrupting youth, he suggested his punishment be free dinners for life!

In 399 BC, when Socrates was an old man, three citizens brought charges against Socrates. A trial was held. In ancient Athens the procedure was quite different from the present day. There was a jury of 500 men drawn from the citizens.

Both the accusers and the defendant had to make speeches in person to the jury. Guilt or innocence was by majority vote. There was no preset penalty if the verdict was 'guilty'.

Both the accuser and the defendant would make speeches proposing what the penalty should be. Again, a vote was taken.

He was charged for not believing in the Gods and for corrupting the youth with his teachings. After being found guilty, Socrates was asked to propose his punishment, Socrates said that the government should give him free dinners for the rest of his life for all the good that he did for society.

The court held a vote between giving Socrates a fine to pay or putting him to death. The verdict was that Socrates was to be put to death.

Lists: Comics for Whovians

If somehow you find yourself in the position of being a Doctor Who fan who has little knowledge of the world of comics, here's a few helpful suggestions of where to get started on your new future addiction. Of course, I find this to be an implausible situation, as comics are typically the gateway addiction, but I enjoy the "conversation" that erupts when you try to compare comics with Who.
