That smell after it rains? It's a mix of plant oil and bacteria!

That smell after it rains? It's a mix of plant oil and bacteria!

After a rainstorm, especially a rain storm that breaks a long dry spell, the world smells different. What causes that strange, clean, earthy smell? A few things that aren't so clean.

Right after the rain there's an intense smell that you have to huff while you can. It's incredibly strong. People everywhere notice it, and scientists have a few theories as to what causes it.

Some of the smells, especially the parts that people identify as "clean," probably come from ozone. Ozone is sometimes used to kill off odors, especially smoky and moldy odors.

The clean scent after a rainfall is partially caused by ozone cleaning away some of the scents we take for granted. The other main scent of a rainstorm is a sort of rich earthy smell, like freshly turned-over dirt. Actually, it's exactly like freshly turned-over dirt.

When the soil dries out, there are bacteria that put out spores that can survive in the dry dirt. And then when it rains, the rain dampens the soil and kicks up the spores, so the scent is the of the bacteria in the air and dirt, going to work again.

1 in 5 women in 18th century London were prostitutes!

1 in 5 women in 18th century London were prostitutes!

The growth in London’s maritime trade during the 18th century brought more and more ships to the wharves and quays.

With the ships came sailors and inevitably there was an increase in the supply of prostitutes to meet the growing demand.

Many women were forced into prostitution by poverty. Others decided that they would rather sell their bodies than work long hours as laundresses, servants or seamstresses.

Prostitution was not confined to the maritime districts of the East End. It was also endemic in the West End.

By the middle of the 18th century Covent Garden (a tourist attraction today) was full of seedy lodging houses and an astonishing number of Turkish baths, many of which were brothels.

It was normal to catch people fornicating in public, and at times, even children were treated for venereal disease.

Slaves in Virginia were offered freedom if they fought for England against the American Revolution. Can you guess how many were freed?

John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, generally known as Lord Dunmore, was a Scottish peer and colonial governor in the American colonies.

Murray was named governor of the Province of New York in 1770, he succeeded to the same position in the Colony of Virginia the following year, after the death of Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt.

As Virginia's governor, Dunmore directed a series of campaigns against the trans-AppalachianIndians, known as Lord Dunmore's War.

However, he is more famously known for a controversial promise he made while he was in power. The royal governor of Virginia offered slaves freedom if they fought for the British in the American Revolution. After the war, the promise was kept with about 14,000 slaves being freed.

A snake was given a live hamster as a meal. You won't believe what happened after.

Gohan and Aochan make strange bedfellows: One's a 3.5-inch dwarf hamster; the other is a yard-long rat snake.

Zookeepers at Tokyo's Mutsugoro Okoku zoo presented the hamster, whose name is a tasty rice dish in Japanese, to Aochan as a snack in October, after the snake refused to eat frozen mice.

But instead of indulging, Aochan decided to make friends with the furry rodent! The Tokyo zoo also keeps a range of mostly livestock animals, and promotes "cross-breed interaction”.

But Gohan and Aochan's case was "was a complete accident”. Who said that you couldn’t befriend your food as your best pal?

Let’s just hope Aochan never betrays Gohan!

In the comics, Batman's dad convince Superman's dad to send his son to Earth!

In the comics, Batman's dad convince Superman's dad to send his son to Earth!

As the story goes, Jor-El is Superman’s biological father, and a leading scientist on the planet Krypton before it's destruction. He foresaw the planet's fate but was unable to convince his colleagues in time to save the inhabitants.

Jor-El was able to save his infant son Kal-El (Superman) by sending him in a homemade spaceship towards Earth just moments before Krypton exploded.

In Superman/Batman #50, it is revealed that, years ago, Jor-El sent a probe to Earth that made contact with Thomas Wayne (Batman’s father) while he was on a drive with his pregnant wife.

The probe holographically transmitting Thomas' consciousness to Krypton so that Jor-El could better learn what kind of world Earth was to help him decide which of many possible candidates he should send his son to.

Thomas tells Jor-El that the people of Earth aren't perfect, but are essentially a good and kind race that would raise the child right, convincing Jor-El to send Kal-El there.

Thomas recorded his encounter in a diary, which was discovered by his son Bruce Wayne in the present day.

The world's smallest time zone is only used by 200 people!

The world's smallest time zone is only used by 200 people!

Time in Australia uses more than three time zones, including Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), Australian Central Standard Time (ACST), and Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

Time is regulated by the individual state governments, some of which observe daylight saving time (DST). Australia's external territories observe different time zones.

A compromise between Western and Central time, unofficially known as Central Western Standard Time, is used in one area in the southeastern corner of Western Australia and one roadhouse in South Australia. The total population of that area is estimated at 200 people.

This area did not change when South Australia introduced DST. During the Western Australian trial of DST from 2006 to 2009, this area also set it's clocks ahead one hour during summer.

There are people who want to replace the standard alphabet with one made up of dots!

There are people who want to replace the standard alphabet with one made up of dots!

Dotsies is an alphabet that uses dots instead of letters. It was invented by Craig Muth and is optimized for reading.

The letters in each word smoosh together, so words look like shapes. Each letter has 5 dots arranged vertically that are either on or off (black or white). It currently has a mapping for English.

Dotsies is designed to be more space efficient than the Roman alphabet - particularly more horizontally codensed so that the eyes can move at a more relaxed pace while reading.

Dotsies is primarily meant to be generated by electronic devices (computers and smartphones, etc.) And to make more efficient use of screen space.

The Earth experiences graviational pull from other stars!

The Earth experiences graviational pull from other stars!

Gravitational force, or gravity, is the mutual attraction between all masses in the universe. Most scientists assume that gravity travels at the speed of light, which is actually the propagation speed of electromagnetic waves (such as light) in a vacuum.

The assumption that gravity also travels at this speed is implicit in Einstein's general theory of relativity, formulated in 1915, which recognizes the universal character of the propagation speed of light and the consequent dependence of space, time, and other mechanical measurements on the motion of the observer performing the measurements.

Throughout this theories, among many others, we can determine that not only do we see distant stars as they were thousands of years ago, but we also still experience their gravity from thousands of years ago, and not from where they are now. We even experience the pull of gravity from stars that have burned out.

Koi fish have been known to live up to 226 years!

Koi fish have been known to live up to 226 years!

Hanako koi fish (1751 – 7th of July 1977) was lived 266 years in Japan. Usually the average lifespan of a carp (koi, nishikigoi) is about 50 years.

Hanako koi fish was the longest lived koi fish in the world as the Legends said. Her age was calculated from her scales (this scientific calculation method is valid until now).

Scales of fish have microscopic areas which shows the growing of the fish like it is in case of tree annual rings. The fish eats more in summer and less in winter which reflects in the size of scales.

It is not so easy to count them you have to use a professional microscope other case it is impossible to see all of the scales. They are extremly small.

Her scales were analyzed under a light microscope by Professor Masayoshi Hiro. The analyses took about two months to get reliable result.

Millions of Chinese men will never find a wife!

Millions of Chinese men will never find a wife!

Low birth rates of women in China may be to blame for some 24 million men failing to find a spouse in 2020, according to a report of the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS).

More inter-generational marriages with wives being older than their husbands' families will emerge due to a large proportion of men born since the 1980s.

People's minds have changed a lot during recent years. Young couples don't want to have a second child, or just live a DINK life.

Some people's preference of wanting a boy to continue the family line also leads to the abortion of girls in rural China, generating a gender imbalance and thus the situation a lot more complicated.
