A new English word is created every 90 minutes!

You find yourself flummoxed, bamboozled, and utterly nonplussed by a series of onerous words the author has surreptitiously placed in his or her latest feature column.

The author’s lexical audacity catapults you into a fit of neaderthalic rage. Big and complex words suck–when you find them in books you probably skip over them and hope that the rest of the sentence can get the point across.

And when you use big words everyone thinks you’re arrogant or trying too hard to sound smart. As of 2012, there were over 1 million words in the English language.

In the English language, there is a new word created every 98 minutes or about 14.7 words per day! What counts as a word these days? Omg! R u srs? Lol, k. Brb.

I just expressed surprise, intrigue, delight, understanding, and urgency in 20 characters.

Creativity : True or False III

For each of the following statements, come up with at least two plausible reasons why they are true. Now, come up with at least two plausible reasons why they are false. This exercise will help you to see that many issues have different sides to them.

1. Vitamins are good for you.

2. Reading makes you smart.

3. Gold is valuable.

4. Winning the lottery will make you happy.

You can repeat this exercise by using any subjective statement that you can find.

Memory : Making Names Meaningful

Once you have gotten someone's name, you can help yourself remember it by making it meaningful to you. To do this, you need to make the name concrete by visualizing it or finding a substitute word that can be visualized. Some names like 'Baker,' 'River,' or 'Holly' can be visualized directly. For names like 'Conroy,' 'Hargrove,' or 'Olefsky,' you can use substitute words or phrases such as 'convoy,' 'hard road,' or 'leaf sky.'

Whatever you use, be sure to get a mental picture of the name. Really see the image in your mind. This will help you remember it later. If you ever encounter a name that is too difficult to visualize, or if you just don't have enough time to make the visualization, it won't matter. Just having spent a little time trying will help because you will have focused on the name longer that you would have without using this technique.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Haughty

haugh-ty

adj :: Arrogantly conceited.

"The haughty businessman would not listen to concerns that he was leading the company astray."

Jedi is the second largest religion in New Zealand!

Jedi is the second largest religion in New Zealand!

The Jedi census phenomenon is a grassroots movement that was created in 2001 for citizens of a number of English-speaking countries to record their religion as "Jedi" or "Jedi Knight" on the national census.

The campaign was loosely organized by circulating e-mails claiming that if enough people entered "Jedi", it would be recognized as an official religion by the government.

The emails also implored people to report their religion as "Jedi", "Because you love Star Wars" or "just to annoy people".

If "Jedi" had been counted as an answer in the 2001 census it would be the second largest religion in New Zealand. Looks like the movement worked pretty great!

Coke Zero was created as a way to sell Diet Coke to men!

Coke Zero was created as a way to sell Diet Coke to men!

Men don't want to drink girly drinks. Or at least that's what Coca-Cola found out when they tried to sell Diet Coke to men.

They associated Diet Coke (or really "diet" anything) with women. But men shouldn't be deprived of artificially low calorie sugar water, right? So Coca-Cola created Coke Zero and specifically marketed to men.

Coke Zero is advertised as tasting just like Coke but having less calories. There are about 50 calories for every 150 milliliters.

Diet Coke, on the other hand, is a completely different formula. Coke Zero is marketed mostly to young men, which has earned it the nickname "Bloke Coke" in the United Kingdom.

Advertising is careful not to call the drink "diet" but rather describe it as having "zero calories."

The Japanese detected the planes carrying the nuclear bombs but decided not to intercept them!

On August 6, 1945, the United States used a massive, atomic weapon against Hiroshima, Japan. This atomic bomb, the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT, flattened the city, killing tens of thousands of civilians.

While Japan was still trying to comprehend this devastation three days later, the United States struck again, this time, on Nagasaki.

In 1945, Japanese radar operators detected a small number of incoming US planes (which carried the nuclear bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki), but decided not to intercept them as the small number of planes were not seen as a threat.

Maybe after this action, several countries now take it seriously even when they see just a few planes coming at them.

A 16-year-old school shooter was asked why she shot 11 people. She said "I don't like Mondays"

On January 29, 1979, Cleveland Elementary School was attacked. The perpetrator was 16-year-old Brenda Anne Spencer, an introverted girl who lived across the street from the school.

She wounded 8 children and a police officer, and killed the principal and school janitor. When asked what her motive was for her actions, she simply said "I don't like Mondays."

When police arrived on at the school, Brenda Anne Spencer had barricaded her house - the building that she was shooting at the school from. She repeatedly claimed that she was going to come out shooting, but eventually surrendered to the police.

Brenda Anne Spencer is still serving time in jail. She was tried as an adult for 2 counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

The Boomtown Rats were inspired by Brenda's "I don't like Mondays" and wrote a hit song with that title. They performed it shortly after the school shooting.

The document that ended the Soviet Union went missing!

The document that ended the Soviet Union went missing!

The Belavezha Accords was a political agreement set forth by the Soviet Union that basically broke up the Soviet Union.

Territories of the former Soviet Union became their own countries in a supposed peaceful manner. Of course, that was not the case.

Regardless, the Belavezha Accords brought a distinct level of peace to Eastern Europe that hadn't been seen in ages. The document was signed on December 8, 1991.

Since this is an extremely important historical document, you would think that it would be on display in a museum. Nope.

When Stanislau Shushkevich, a man who signed the Belavezha Accords, tried to write his memoirs, he was informed that the document has been missing since February 7, 2013! No one has any idea where the document is!

There's a sea-slug that eats venomous creatures and saves the venom for later use!

There's a sea-slug that eats venomous creatures and saves the venom for later use!

Glaucus-atlanticus is a species of small-sized blue sea slug.

This creature can be found in many places, places such as temperate and tropical waters. Regions where this slug is found include the East and South Coast of South Africa, European waters, the east coast of Australia and Mozambique.

These sea slugs feed on creatures including the venomous cnidarian, the Portuguese Man o' War. Because the sea slug stores the venom from the Portuguese Man o’ War within it's own tissues, a human picking up the sea slug may receive a very painful sting.

They might be very beautiful, but we suggest you watch out, especially if you try to put them in the palm of your hand just like in the picture.
