Rats laugh when you tickle them! And they love it.

Scientists have decided something strange, after trying to tickle some animals - especially rats.

When the scientists started to tickle rats, they used a machine that detects high pitched frequencies and makes them audible to our weak human ears.

These recordings showed that the rats were making noises while being tickled. This noise was laughter!

Everyone loves being tickled! Scientists found that after tickling rats, the rats would begin to enjoy the person's company more.

They would start to play with the trainer's hands, and constantly follow the hand wherever put theirs!

Creativity : Engineering Challenge : Catapult

Engineering challenges are fun activities that are frequently assigned to students in physics or engineering classes, but they can easily be used outside of these venues. An engineering challenge usually has a simple goal and some rules about what sorts of materials you are allowed to use. These are great ways to get people thinking creatively and to foster teamwork and competition. Try an engineering challenge at a birthday party, office outing, scout meeting, or any other gathering where you want to have fun and exercise your creativity.

The objective in the Catapult challenge is to fling a tennis ball the furthest distance. Each team is given the same kit of supplies, which could contain things like wood, nails, rubber tubing, dowels, etc. Teams can construct traditional catapults, trebuchets or more creative flinging devices if they wish. In addition to the distance challenge, you might want to set up targets and give prizes for accuracy. Each team will be allowed to aim and make adjustments in an attempt to get closest to the target.

Memory : Procedural Memory

Procedural memory is the memory that involves the learning of a skill. If you learn to knit a sweater, then you are using your procedural memory. This type of memory is often used without thinking about it. For example, if you have learned how to ride a bike, you no longer have to consciously think about pedaling; your body just does it. Procedural memory is very long lasting. Once we learn something in this way, it is very difficult to unlearn it. Hence the phrase, "It's like riding a bike."

Some evidence seems to show that the cerebellum and basal ganglia are the parts of the brain that are primarily responsible for this type of memory and that the hippocampus has little involvement. This may be why people with Alzheimer's Disease rarely lose their procedural memory.

Scientists were able to bring a 32,000 year old plant back to life! How?

The oldest plant ever to be regenerated was grown from a small grouping of 32,000-year-old-seeds. A Russian team of scientists after found the seeds in a small hole, buried by an Ice Age squirrel!

The seeds were found near the banks of the Kolyma River. The seeds were under 124 feet of permafrost, surrounded by other layers that contained mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, and bison bones.

This discovery has led scientists to believe that permafrost could be a "depository for an ancient gene pool". In other words, an area of the world where DNA from extinct species can be found and extracted so we can bring those species back to life!

The seeds were of the ancient arctic flowering plant found in Siberia known as Silene Stenophylla. The seeds had minor damage done to them, almost all of which is assumed to have been done by the squirrel that buried them.

A Japanese swordsman known for arriving late got an amazing vicotry by arriving early! Check this out.

Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman that was born sometime in 1584, and died of natural causes on June 13, 1645.

Although he was incredibly skilled, his talent alone wasn't what made him a renowned warrior.

Miyamoto Musashi earned his fame when he challenged a master of the Yoshioka School to a duel. Musashi arrived late, which irritated his opponent who would end up losing.

Ownership of the school was passed to the owner's brother, Yoshioka Denshichiro.

Once again, Musashi arrived late, and bested his opponent in a single blow. The ownership of the school was then passed to a 12-year old named Yoshioka Matashichiro.

They assembled a group of archers, musketeers and swordsmen, and challenged Musashi to a duel.

The plan was the group that had assembled were going to wait for Musashi to arrive late, and ambush him when he appeared for the duel.

Little did they know that Musashi was going to break his habit of arriving late, and arrive incredibly early. His early arrival led him to ambush the group of men trying to ambush him!

The War on Christmas™ Just Got Real

I admit, I don’t have a direct line to The Man Upstairs like some people do, but something about this feels… wrong, somehow. Even I know that the central message of Jesus’ teachings was not “smack anyone who doesn’t wish you a Merry Christmas.”
