The oldest plant ever to be regenerated was grown from a small grouping of 32,000-year-old-seeds. A Russian team of scientists after found the seeds in a small hole, buried by an Ice Age squirrel!
The seeds were found near the banks of the Kolyma River. The seeds were under 124 feet of permafrost, surrounded by other layers that contained mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, and bison bones.
This discovery has led scientists to believe that permafrost could be a "depository for an ancient gene pool". In other words, an area of the world where DNA from extinct species can be found and extracted so we can bring those species back to life!
The seeds were of the ancient arctic flowering plant found in Siberia known as Silene Stenophylla. The seeds had minor damage done to them, almost all of which is assumed to have been done by the squirrel that buried them.
