Do you get motion sickness? It might be because your body thinks you're being poisoned. This is why.

Do you get motion sickness? It might be because your body thinks you're being poisoned. This is why.

The human body is an amazing thing. Even when it doesn't seem like it. Motion sickness, for example, may seem like an unnecessary annoyance, but the body is really trying to protect you. It's just confused.

The brain's area postrema is responsible for inducing vomiting when poisons are detected. It also resolves conflicts between vision and balance.

When the body feels motion (e.g. On a boat) but doesn't see it (because the windows are covered, etc.), It assumes that there is something wrong.

Specifically, it believes the body is hallucinating and that poison is the source of this hallucination.

To rid the body of poison, it induces vomiting. So next time you get carsick or boatsick or any kind of motion sick, just remember that your body is trying to help you.

Creativity : Find Your Environment

Previously, we discussed how different environments can affect performance. This exercise will help you determine what types of things help or hinder your own creativity.

First, think about your current conceptual productivity and rank it on a scale of 1 to 10. This will serve as a benchmark to determine improvement in the future. Now, get a piece of paper and describe the most ideal environment that you can imagine. If you could design and build the perfect office or study, what would you do? Think about lighting, noise, temperature, access to materials, access to food, collaboration with friends and co-workers, communication, etc.

Once you are done, compare this perfect environment to the one in which you currently work. What small changes could you make to move your current space toward your ideal? Make these changes. Once you have used the new space for a while, rank your productivity again and see if it has improved.

If you work in a group, have everyone do this exercise (anonymously if desired) and see what the team has in common. If you implement these common requests, you'll be boosting the productivity of everyone involved.

Memory : Interest

Naturally, people pay more attention to the things that interest them. If you like sports, you are going to remember teams and stats much more readily than someone who is not interested in sports. There are two ways to use this fact to your advantage when you need to remember something that is not interesting.

One way is to try to make the material more meaningful by looking for ways that it is similar to something that you enjoy.

Another way is to use rewards and punishments. For example, if you can recall 10 items from your flashcards or study for a full hour, you could reward yourself with a study break and a piece of candy. Some people may give themselves the reward even if they fail the task, so if you have trouble being honest with yourself ask someone to dispense the rewards for you.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Apostate

a-pos-tate

noun :: One who abandons long-held religious or political convictions.

"Ha-ha--I'm awfully glad you have made an apostate of me all the same." --Hardy, Thomas

You think Volkswagen only makes Beetles? You'll be surprised to learn all the brands that they own.

You think Volkswagen only makes Beetles? You'll be surprised to learn all the brands that they own.

The car industry, while it may seem like it has many brands, is actually owned by far fewer car companies.

For example, BMW owns Mini and Rolls Royce. Fiat owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Ram, among others.

Volkswagon has become a luxury car brand in it's own right. Long past are the days of it just being known for the VW Bug. While the Beetle is still in VW's line, it now has luxury vehicles like the Toureg.

Volkswagon also owns a number of other prestigious car brands including Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley and Bugatti. In short, only cars owned by VW are rapped about.

A mother's breasts will adjust temperature to make sure the baby is kept warm. When she has twins, the most amazing thing happens.

Kangaroo Care - when a mother cuddles her diapered baby on her bare chest - has been proven to increase health and parent-baby bonding.

However, it turns out Kangaroo Care is more intricate than previously expected. In fact, a mother's body responds to the baby's body to make sure it stays warm.

More than that, if a mother is holding twins - one on each breast - she can moderate the temperature of each of them separately. And she doesn't even know her body is doing this!

In an experiment, researchers observed a mother Kangaroo Caring for her two twins. She held one on each breast. The researchers monitored the temperatures of both babies and both breasts.

They found that each individual breast adjusted it's temperature to keep the baby at an ideal temperature.

A book critic gave Michael Crichton a terrible review. Crichton wrote him in his next book as a child molester!

A book critic gave Michael Crichton a terrible review. Crichton wrote him in his next book as a child molester!

Apparently author Michael Crichton does not take too nicely to harsh criticism. Being a famous author, you would think that he was used to a bad review now an then, but it seems one critic's negativity was just too much to take.

When journalist Michael Crowley wrote a 3,700 word review tearing apart Crichton's latest book, Crichton decided to strike back.

In his next book, "Next," Crichton named a character Mick Crowley - allegedly after the critic. Having a character named after you should be flattering.

That depends on the character though and Mick Crowley is not one to be admired. In fact, the character is a child rapist in the book.

The fake Mick Crowley and the real Michael Crowley, apart from similar names, are also both Yale graduates and political reporters.

The real Michael Crowley didn't seem too upset though. He said that if Crichton struck back so hostilely, he must have won the battle between them.

This African rat has figured out how to use a plant's poison to defend itself!

This African rat has figured out how to use a plant's poison to defend itself!

When you're a member of the animal kingdom and you're lower down on the food chain and you lack any truly harmful defenses, just what do you do? Well if you're the African Crested rat finds it's own poison.

This rat is larger than normal rats and looks somewhat like a porcupine due to it's stuck up mohawk.

For years, scientists knew the rat was poisonous but didn't know where the poison came from. That's because the rats don't make the poison themselves.

Instead, they chew the poison out of the Poison Arrow plant and then lick the poison into the hollow hairs that run along their back.

Whenever the rat feels threatened, it spikes up it's poisoned mohawk and dares the predator to take a bite. If they do, they risk serious illness or even death.

For thousands of years, African tribesmen have used the very same poison for hunting. They put it in their arrows, which allows them to kill large prey like elephants.
