Creativity : Peripheral Vision

Fix your vision on a nearby stationary object. Without moving your eyes, become aware of what is in your peripheral vision. Notice how things get fuzzier the further they are from the center. Now, close your eyes and try to recreate the scene from memory. Try to get a vivid image. Then, if you want you can draw it.

This visual exercise will help you become aware of the things that you do not normally see. It also helps improve your ability to reconstruct things in your mind's eye. Visual skills are an important part of creativity.

Memory : Days of the Month

Here is a little trick to help you remember how many days are in each month. Hold out your hands in front of you, palm down, and make a fist. Now, look at your knuckles and the valleys in between them. Start with the left most knuckle and call it January, the valley adjacent to it is February, the next knuckle is March and so on down to December which is the second to last knuckle on your right hand. The spot between your two hands does not count as a valley. Since each knuckle is a high spot, it represents 31 days. Each valley is a low spot and therefore represents 30 days. The only exception is February, which has 28 days (29 in a leap year). You probably know this, but you can remember it because February is the little valley next to your little finger, so it is the smallest.

Another way to remember the number of days in each month is with the following rhyme, which you have probably heard, but have probably not remembered.

Thirty days hath September,

April, June, and November;

All the rest have thirty-one,

Except with February alone,

And that has twenty-eight days clear,

And twenty-nine in each leap year.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Consternation

con-ster-na-tion

noun :: Surprise and fear. Paralyzing dismay.

"The sight from the edge of the cliff filled me with consternation."

A man once rescued a newborn baby from a dumpster only to find out the baby was his!

A man who jumped into a dumpster to rescue a newborn that had been discovered by another passerby says he later found out the baby boy was his son!

The man who claims to be the father of the baby said he was unaware his girlfriend was even pregnant.

One hour after the baby was found, a woman was taken to hospital in stable condition by emergency medical services. Police confirmed she's the mother.

Investigators believe she was not aware of her pregnancy until the birth, and that the father was not aware he had a son until after the incident.

Depending on it's outcome, she could be charged with attempted murder, failing to provide the necessities of life or child abandonment.

Does Fidel Castro know the truth about the Kennedy assassination?

Does Fidel Castro know the truth about the Kennedy assassination?

Fidel Castro is a Cuban communist revolutionary and politician who was President from 1976 to 2008. Castro adopted leftist anti-imperialist politics while studying law at the University of Havana.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro, while denying complicity by his nation in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, believed the 1963 murder resulted from a conspiracy of perhaps three people.

Castro was also quoted as saying that accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald became angry and threatened to kill Kennedy when he was denied a visa by the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City earlier in 1963.

Fidel Castro joins the massive list of all the people that believe that the assassination of JFK was in fact a conspiracy.

Have you ever wondered how many bacteria live in your body? It's kinda gross.

Have you ever wondered how many bacteria live in your body? It's kinda gross.

For years, bacteria have had a bad name. They are the cause of infections, of diseases. They are something to be scrubbed away, things to be avoided.

But now researchers have taken a detailed look at another set of bacteria that may play even bigger roles in health and disease: The 100 trillion good bacteria that live in or on the human body.

No one really knew much about them. They are essential for human life, needed to digest food, to synthesize certain vitamins, to form a barricade against disease-causing bacteria.

Not all bacteria are bad for you, in fact you need them in order to survive, just try to take the adequate cleaning measurements and you’ll be fine throughout your entire life.

Superman once wielded Thor's hammer! How was that possible?

Superman once wielded Thor's hammer! How was that possible?

As seen in the marvel movies; Thor often uses the hammer as a physical weapon, with almost nothing being capable of withstanding a hammer blow or throw.

It has been described as impacting with sufficient force to “destroy mountains” and has proven capable of shattering the armor of a Celestial.

Not everyone is worthy enough to hold it and wield its power. This is not Superman’s case. In the 2003-2004 fangasm that was JLA/Avengers, Superman uses both Captain America's shield and Thor's hammer in the final battle against Krona.

He was one step away from being the ultimate superhero, all Superman needed was Bruce Banner's mystical fuchsia jorts that allow him to transform into the Hulk.

Ted Bundy got married literally during his murder trial! How did he pull that off?

Ted Bundy got married literally during his murder trial! How did he pull that off?

Ted Bundy was an American serial killer, rapist, kidnapper, and necrophilia who assaulted and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier.

After more than a decade of denials, he confessed shortly before his execution to 30 homicides committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978; the true total remains unknown, and could be much higher.

During a desperate act in court, Bundy surprised everyone by calling Carol Boone as a character witness and marrying her while she was on the witness stand.

Bundy took advantage of an obscure Florida law providing that a marriage declaration in court, in the presence of a judge, constituted a legal marriage.

Boone was convinced of Bundy's innocence. She later gave birth to Bundy's child, a little girl who Bundy adored. In time Boone divorced Bundy after realizing he was guilty of the horrific crimes.

Why did Peter the Great of Russia impose a tax on having a beard?

Why did Peter the Great of Russia impose a tax on having a beard?

World history is full of odd tax schemes, including one imposed by Russian Tsar Peter the Great.

By choosing a more western way of living for his nation, Peter enforced a beard tax on all Russian men, since European men were usually clean shaven.

From the very beginning of his reign, Peter I had set a course for Westernizing the entire Russian way of life, society, and culture.

Not only did he revolutionize his army, education system and administrative structure, but also encouraged Western fashion sensibilities.

For centuries Russian men had worn long flowing beards. Not only was it a traditional culture, it embodied Orthodox views on manhood and image.

Many considered it a sin to shave and removal was a deeply symbolic act. Of course, Peter’s new rule was difficult to get accustomed to and caused hardship for those struggling to part with their beloved beards.

In order to enforce the new fashion order which was adopted in other European countries, Peter levied a heavy tax on those still much attached to their facial hair.

All men except priests had to pay up to 100 roubles (a small fortune in those years) annually.

Last Minute Baby Puzzle

Last Minute Baby Puzzle

This was a very last minute project, as in I made it right before we were leaving to drop off presents at my sister-in-law’s place! This is for her 1.5 year old and they have lots of pets in their house. I made it out of 1” alder scrap (left unfinished by sanded to 320) and sanded the bottom flat so the bunny can also sit as a display item.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

What did dinosaurs taste like?

What did dinosaurs taste like?

A team of paleontologists has discovered T. Rex bones with giant teeth marks, suggesting the ancient carnivore either hunted their own species or scavenged their remains. What might these dinosaurs have tasted like?

Many people have glibly suggested that a hunk of dinosaur flesh might have tasted like chicken. Birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs, that’s why the theory suggests that they might’ve tasted like chicken.

However, countless factors determine the flavor of meat, including the composition of an animal's muscles, it's eating habits, and it's hormones.

Since dinosaurs had a different diet and lifestyle than most modern birds, their taste might’ve been somewhat different.

In conclusion, we might never know what their meat flavor really was.
