Think you can function on 6 hours of sleep? Think again—only 3% of people function normally after only 6 hours of sleep.

Sleep is ‘individualized’ and the sleep time required varies from person to person. There are two factors that influence the amount of sleep an individual needs. According to the Harvard School Division of Sleep Medicine, those factors are age and genetics.

Genetics do not only influence how much sleep you need, but also your sleeping pattern and waking time, or your preference to perform certain tasks at different times of the day. The majority of adults require 7.5 to 8 hours sleep within a time period of 24 hours. A very small percentage of the population (3%) can function satisfactorily with only 6 hours of sleep per day thanks to their genetics.

Customarily, the older you get the less sleep you need to function as shown by this list of recommended sleeping times. •Newborns (1 to 2 months) – 10.5 to 18 hours •Infants (3 to 11 months) – 10 to 14 hours •Toddlers (1 to 3 years) – 12 to 14 hours •Preschoolers (3 to 5 years) – 11 to 13 hours •School-aged children (5 to 12 years) – 10 to 11 hours •Adolescents (12 to 18 years) – 8.5 to 9.5 hours •Adults (18 years to the end of life) – 7.5 to 8.5 hours

Studies have shown that those who sleep too much or too little suffer from a higher mortality rate than those who sleep just long enough.

Memory : Card Trick: Missing Card

We have already learned how the phonetic mnemonic system can be used to remember playing cards. Once you learn this, here is an interesting trick that you can perform for your friends and family.

The Missing Card

Ask someone to remove one card from the deck. You are going to look through the deck once and then tell them the missing card. As you are looking through the deck you need to modify each card keyword as you come to it. Form a mental association with this modification. For example, the keyword for the 8 of clubs is 'cave'. You could picture the roof of a cave caving in. The keyword for the 4 of hearts is 'hair'. You could picture your friend with his hair on fire. Once you have looked through the deck and modified each keyword, run through the deck in your mind. The one keyword that has not been modified represents the card that was removed.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Foppish

According to scientists, 'night owls' are brighter than early risers and make more money on average than 'morning people'

According to scientists, 'night owls' are brighter than early risers and make more money on average than 'morning people'

Research on teenagers suggests that night owls are in fact not lazy, sluggish, or undisciplined; and that they may indeed be brighter than the early risers, who are usually seen in a better light.

The internal clocks of some people make them evening types. They stay up late and sleep in later in the mornings. The morning types go to bed early and are at their peak early in the mornings.

The research conducted at the University of Madrid included tests that measured school performance and individual intelligence. Evening types scored higher on inductive reasoning, which is considered to be a good estimate of general intelligence. Inductive reasoning is also linked to innovative thinking, more prestigious jobs and a tendency to earn higher incomes.

The study found that night owls’ school achievement was rated lower than morning larks’ by about 8 per cent. Researchers believe that this suggests that night owls are disadvantaged by early morning school schedules.

Professor Jim Horn of Loughborough University says that evening types tend to be more social and more people-orientated. He suggests they will probably be good at cryptic crosswords, whereas the morning types will probably rather attempt the logical ones.

Famous larks: George W Bush (reportedly always in bed by 10), Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice (always awake by 4:30), and Ernest Hemmingway, to name but a few. Some of the famous night owls include President Obama, Charles Darwin, Keith Richards and Marcel Proust.

Johnny Depp is blind in one eye!

Johnny Depp is blind in one eye!

The versatile and rebellious actor Johnny Depp has recently revealed to Rolling Stone that he is blind in his left eye. Depp has been struggling with his vision all his life. He is near sighted in his right eye and has never had proper vision.

He wears glasses when not on set, because without them he can only see a few feet in front of him. Being one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, one would never notice that he is battling to see while he is portraying his more-often-than-not deep, dark or sinister characters.

The fact that he is blind in his one eye may even be one of the reasons the actor adopted Golden Eye, the one-eyed Andalusian horse who played Gunpowder in Sleepy Hollow, thereby saving the horse from a horrible fate.

Battling his challenges with sight seems nothing compared to the "Edward Scissorhands" star’s battle for normalcy. He is quoted as having one desire: “Going somewhere where you don’t have to be on the run or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel,” he said. “At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realize that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive.”

The lead singer of metal band Lamb of God tried to run for President... and was then charged with manslaughter. This story is nuts!

The lead singer of metal band Lamb of God tried to run for President... and was then charged with manslaughter. This story is nuts!

Lead vocalist of the metalcore band Lamb of God, Randy Blythe, announced that he would be running for President of the United States via a blog entry on 5 January 2012. The title of the entry was 'I want to be the Big Cheese'.

With an official campaign slogan like "Fuck the dumb shit. Let's get real here", it is hardly surprising that his name did not appear on the ballot in any of the fifty states. Why would he think he is qualified for the job of being the 'Big Cheese'? Before Lamb of god became successful, Blythe worked as a cook. He also had various side projects and collaborated with bands like A Life Once Lost.

In the end, Blythe was otherwise occupied during the run up to the election, and also during the election itself, due to charges of suspicion of manslaughter having been laid against him.

On 24 May 2010, Blythe was involved in an incident that resulted in the death of Daniel Nosek in Prague. Daniel tried to climb onstage and was thrown off backwards by Blythe. He fell directly on his head, causing a fatal injury. On 27 June 2012 Randy was arrested by Czech police on suspicion of manslaughter and held in remand in prison for five weeks.

On 5 March 2013 Prague municipal court ruled that Blythe was not criminally liable for Nosek's death, but has a moral responsibility for it.

It is unclear whether Randy Blythe has any intentions of running for President in future.

A civilian worker set a nuclear submarine on fire just to get off work early. Any guesses as to how much the damage cost?

The USS Miami was being overhauled at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard when a fire broke out on the submarine on 23 May 2012. It took firefighters 12 hours to extinguish the fire and seven firefighters sustained injuries.

Casey J. Fury, a civilian painter and sandblaster working on the sub, confessed to starting the fire to get out of work early. He admitted that he set some rags alight on the top bunk of a bunk room. He was indicted on two counts of arson and sentenced to over 17 years in federal prison. He was also ordered to pay $400 million in restitution.

At first the US Navy planned on repairing the submarine, but it came to light that the repairs necessary were more extensive than originally anticipated. This raised the estimated repair costs by $250 million, from $450 million to $750 million. It was estimated that repairs would be completed on 30 April 2015.

On 6 August 2013 the US Navy announced that the cost of repairs is more than the budget allowed and not worth weakening the overall fleet-readiness. The submarine would therefore have to be scrapped.

The USS Miami is the first submarine and nuclear-powered ship to be lost in a US naval shipyard.

Contestants eliminated from 'Hell's Kitchen' are immediately taken for psychiatric evaluation. Is Gordon Ramsay too abusive?

Contestants eliminated from 'Hell's Kitchen' are immediately taken for psychiatric evaluation. Is Gordon Ramsay too abusive?

Hell’s Kitchen is a reality cooking competition show, and as the name suggests, it is no walk in the park.

Famously abusive celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, in close vicinity of a number of sharp knives, gives the show its edge—but it leaves the contestants on edge too. The stress of Hell’s Kitchen is very real.

Because of this highly strung environment where tempers flare and contestants are not allowed any communication with the ‘outside world’, certain measurements have to be put in place to make sure sanity prevails.

Gordon Ramsay is well known for his abusive outbursts, and diners often go just to hear him curse and cause drama. He often steps on toes, and therefore has a few huge bodyguards who are ready to step in and protect him if someone feels the urge for revenge.

The contestants, however, are more in need of psychological than security assistance. Each contestant eliminated from Hell’s Kitchen is immediately taken for psychiatric evaluation. “The experience can be quite draining, so the producers want to make sure you don’t want to kill yourself—or someone else”, an on-set source revealed.

After the evaluation, contestants are treated to any spa- and beauty treatments the desire. It is like a debriefing before re-joining society.

That is why the saying goes: If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Especially if it is Chef Ramsay’s kitchen!

Scientist recently found evidence of a giant sea scorpion that was almost 8ft tall!

Scientist recently found evidence of a giant sea scorpion that was almost 8ft tall!

The discovery in Germany of a giant fossilised claw of a sea scorpion indicates that these monsters lived between 460 and 255 million years ago, and they were considerably taller than the average man.

This find also shows that insects, spiders, crabs and other creepy-crawlies were much bigger in the ancient past than we ever imagined. The sea scorpion (eurypterid) Jaekelopterus Rhenaniae is almost half a metre longer than previous estimations for these arthropods, and the largest known arthropods

There are various theories trying to explain why these giant arthropods evolved. Some believed it was due to higher oxygen levels in the atmosphere, while others say it was due to an ‘arms race’ alongside their prey, the early armoured fish.

Dr. Simon Braddy from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol and co-author of an article about the find says: ‘There is no simple single explanation. It is more likely that some ancient arthropods were big because there was little competition from the vertebrates, as we see today. If the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere suddenly increased, it doesn't mean all the bugs would get bigger.’
