This Hollywood superstar hurt her career to encourage safer work environments for WWII women!

Veronica Lake was an American film, stage and television actress.

Lake's breakthrough role was in the 1941 war drama I Wanted Wings. The film was a major hit in which Lake played the second female lead.

She also had starring roles in more popular movies, including Sullivan's Travels, This Gun for Hire, and many other great films.

A stray lock of her shoulder-length, blonde hair during a publicity photo shoot led to her iconic "peekaboo" hairstyle, which was widely imitated.

During World War II, Lake changed her trademark image to encourage women working in war industry factories to adopt more practical, safer hairstyles, although doing so may have damaged her career.

The media can really influence a huge amount of people, which is why it needs to be used for good purposes whenever it’s necessary.

Creativity : Capturing Creativity

If you have a digital camera, carry it with you for an entire day and keep a lookout for things that you think are creative or interesting. Take a picture of these things. Go for at least 100 photos. If you are having a hard time, try to focus on the little details. A book could have a creative title or a pile of paper clips could be in an interesting arrangement. At the end of the day, review the photos and pick your favorite 5 things. What makes these things interesting to you? By doing this exercise you will be increasing your awareness of the creative aspects of things that are all around you. The photographs are also a good source of inspiration that you can turn to when you are stuck on a problem. Sometimes seeing other creative solutions will help you discover your own.

Memory : Visual Imagery

Visual associations are a key part of many mnemonic systems. At first, making visual associations may feel unnatural, and it may slow you down, but keep practicing. The more you practice forming visual images, the quicker you will get. Creating visual images will always take a little extra time regardless of how fast you get, so it might not be the best strategy to use when the material you are trying to learn is being presented very rapidly. For material that you can learn at your own pace, using imagery will help. Even though it may take longer to go through the material once, you will need fewer repetitions and thus you will save time in the long run.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Contumacious

con-tu-ma-cious

adj :: Stubbornly disobedient. Rebellious.

"The company fired the delinquent and contumacious employees."

California once passed a law to sterilize people against their will. The number was astonishing.

California once passed a law to sterilize people against their will. The number was astonishing.

The "Asexualization Act" of 1909, and it's sibling follow-up Acts of 1913 and 1917, gave the go-ahead for California to sterilize more than 20,000 men and women against their will.

These decisions were made, or backed, by a board that at one point was aptly named the, "State Commission in Lunacy."

Officially, the majority of the people sterilized were diagnosed as being "mentally ill" or "mentally deficient," or possessing”feeblemindedness."

Unofficially, African-Americans and people of Mexican origin underwent forced sterilizations to a degree greater than each group's per capita population would suggest.

The reasons for why California did this were pretty ridiculous. Essentially, the state ethought they were too drunk, too poor or too promiscuous. Even more than that, you could get fixed if they thought your parents were either of those things!

Smithers in The Simpson was originally black! Why did they change him?

Smithers in The Simpson was originally black! Why did they change him?

So, what happened? The producers had always intended for him to be white, but a blunder occurred at the animation stage and the color scheme was completely messed up.

The animators were originally going to go along with this, until someone pointed out that having a black subservient character might cause controversy.

They changed the color scheme back in his second appearance to avoid unintentional racism.

For those of you who don't konw, Waylon Smithers is Mr Burns' assistant and care-provider in the TV show the Simpsons.

He has an unhealthy obsession with 'Malibu Stacy' dolls and is often used to represent the stereotype of a closet gay man. Some more interesting facts about The Simpsons:

  • Many characters' middle initial is J.

  • Kang and Kodos, the two alien characters, are named after Star Trek characters.

  • The Simpsons holds the world records for the longest running prime time TV show and most guest stars on a TV show.

  • The series has parodied Citizen Kane so often that it has often been claimed you could re-enact the entire movie using clips from the show.

  • Many characters are named after streets in Portland, Oregon.

If you lived here, you would have to wear a gas mask when you're outside.

It's a set of volcanic islands called Izu Islands, off of Japan that have so much sulfur that it's resident's must wear gas masks outside.

In early 2000 the islands were evacuated, due to a volcano emiting dangerous gasses.

In 2005, people were allowed to go back, but they were required to keep a gas mask with them at all times.

Scientists are on the volcanic islands to conduct experiments on the deteriorating land and atmosphere.

Those who live there have to wear gas masks for most of the day. So, watch out for the Izu Islands or bring a gas mask!

Oak Nativity puzzle

Oak Nativity puzzle

Nativity puzzles made for my great nieces and nephews. One already wrapped in Saran to be Christmas wrapped. Made of oak with shellac spray can. Mostly used the bandsaw with a little scroll saw for some fine lines. First puzzle I’ve made, and am more impressed with those of you who make small pieces all the time. What a lot of sanding, then spraying! The 5 year old jumped right on it, though, so it’s a family heirloom in the making. Oh, the pattern came from a puzzle our children’s batismal pastor made for our family, so the tradition is passed on.

This gang is responsible for 25% of all federal prison homicides!

The Aryan Brotherhood, also known as the Brand, the AB, Alice Baker, or the One-Two, is a white supremacist prison gang and organized crimesyndicate in the United States with about 20,000 members in and out of prison.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the gang makes up less than 0.1% of the prison population, but it is responsible for up to 25% of murders in the federal prison system.

The AB has focused on the economic activities typical of organized crime entities; particularly drug trafficking, extortion, inmate prostitution, and murder-for-hire.

Like most prison gangs, Aryan Brotherhood members mark themselves with distinctive tattoos. Designs commonly include the words "Aryan Brotherhood", "AB"," 666, Nazi symbolism such as SS, sig runes, and swastikas, as well as shamrocks and Celtic iconography.

There are a number of banned Pokémon episodes. Some have sent kids to the hospital!

There are a number of banned Pokémon episodes. Some have sent kids to the hospital!

The Pokémon animated series is one of the longest running cartoon shows ever.

In the course of over 12 years of episodes, there have been a number of them that were either never aired, pulled from rotation or censored.

Here's a few of them:

  • Electric Soldier Porygon. The most famous one. A sequence in the episode made a few hundred Japansese kids go to the hospital suffering from an epileptic attack. The episode was later modified to prevent those problems.

  • Beauty and the Beach. This one showed James from Team Rocket wearing a woman's bikini, complete with real looking boobs! This episode aired in the US with a lot of cuts to make it less controversial.

  • The Legend of Dratini. In this episode, a gun was fired at actual human characters. It was decided that wasn't appropriate. Not airing this one caused continuity issues because Ash caught a few of his pokmon in this episode.

  • The Ice Cave. Jynx is featured in this episode. Some people believe that she looks too much like it's a pokémon in blackface. Because of this, it was decided not to air it in the United States.

Be careful with hickeys. This woman got paralyzed by one.

The 44-year-old New Zealander went to the emergency room of her local hospital after losing movement in her left arm while watching TV.

Doctors concluded the loss of the movement was caused by a stroke but were baffled concerning it's cause until they noticed a love bite on the woman's neck.

Incurred a few days prior, bruising from the hickey had caused a blood clot in the artery directly below the woman's skin.

This clot dislodged itself and traveled to her heart, causing the minor stroke! The woman eventually experienced a full recovery after being given an anti-coagulant to break up the clot.

Bubinga Elephant Puzzle

Bubinga Elephant Puzzle

I tried to build this sometime in the 1990s and failed miserably. When Archie posted his completed project I was motivated to pull the plans back out, redo the math, and try again. (Thanks Archie!) I scaled this one down for a 1/2” x 6” x 10” piece of Bubinga I had. When using 1/2” thick lumber it only takes 1/4 bf of wood so it’s a good use of scraps. I like puzzles and if anyone knows of any other 3-D ones like this (I’ve got a half-dozen burr puzzles in the works) please let me know where I can find plans.
