Today's Daily Brain Teaser (Apr 19, 2013)

What Song?

A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes out of his wallet.

He turns to the rich man and says to him,

"I have an amazing talent; I know almost every song that has ever existed."

The rich man laughs.

The poor man says, "I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady's name of your choice in it."

The rich man laughs again and says, "OK, how about my daughter's name, Joanna Armstrong-Miller?"

The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.

What song did he sing?

Words & Music 3

Let's see how much you know about these miscellaneous questions dealing with words and music.

Creativity : Opposite Point of View III

People tend to quickly classify a situation, which causes us to think and respond to it in predictable ways. A creative thinker will think about situations from different angles. Try this exercise to think of these situations from a different point of view.

1. Your favorite pair of jeans just got a hole in them. List five reasons why this is good.

2. You forgot your umbrella at home and now it's raining. List five reasons why you should be happy about this.

3. You just got a raise at work. List five reasons why you should be disappointed.

4. Your best friend just gave you a surprise birthday party. List five reasons why you should be angry with him or her.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Calumniate

ca-lum-ni-ate

verb :: To utter maliciously false statements or charges.

"The crook did not hesitate to calumniate the police for framing him."

Memory : Short-Term Memory

The average person's short-term memory can only hold 7 pieces of information for about 30 seconds. If you want to get something into your long-term memory, you're going to need to remember it for at least 30 seconds.

This is probably why it's easy to forget someone's name moments after hearing it. The name only sticks in your brain for 30 seconds, and unless you do something to push it into your long-term memory, you are going to forget it.

To get more than 7 items at a time into your long-term memory, you can try the Chunking Technique we discussed yesterday. Repetition can also help.

But remember, having a limited short-term memory is a good thing! Imagine how cluttered your mind would be if you remembered every single thing that went into it.

Recycled Rasta Optical Illusion

via Mighty Optical Illusions http://www.moillusions.com/2013/04/recycled-rasta-optical-illusion.html

First glance on the “Recycled Rasta-man” may give you an impression you’re looking at some bizarre oil painting, but when you look closer, you’ll soon realise it’s actually an anamorphic 3D sculpture made of recycled materials – The massive portrait of actor Sotigui Kouyaté. This portrait was made by French artist Bernard Pras, and was created entirely out of recycled materials such as clothes, rags, wood, glass lanterns, dishes, rubber and other trash Bernard would gather from the installation site. As it usually applies to anamorphic art, Bernard’s work can only be seen from a certain angle. When you look at the installation from any other point of view, a pile of trash is all you see.
