A man forgot about $27 in bitcoins he bought. It turned into $886k!

A man bought $27 worth of Bitcoins in 2009. He completely forgot about that investment until this year.

After seeing the news coverage about the surge in Bitcoin prices, he decided to go back and look and he realized that the 5,000 Bitcoins he bought for $27 were now worth $866k!

The man cashed in 1/5th of his investment to buy a new apartment in one of Oslo’s wealthiest areas. His 5,000 bit coins would be worth about $1 million just a few days later.

Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Nov 08, 2013)

Cartoon and Animated Characters II

How well do you know your cartoon and animated characters from TV shows and movies? I'll give you a description. See if you can match it up with the correct name. For those characters who may not be well known, I have also included what cartoon, show, or movie they are from. Good luck and have fun!

Take the Quiz at Braingle.com

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Plangent

plan-gent

adjective :: Beating; dashing, as a wave. Loud and resounding.

"She moans along with the woman who is singing -- wailing, really -- her hands gripping the steering wheel to the plangent cries of the singer and the sobbing of violins." --Alice Walker

Memory : Brain Deterioration

The brain does not have to deteriorate as we grow older. In fact, one recent study shows that new cell growth in the brain occurs in adults, something previously thought not to occur. This growth occurs in the hippocampus which is where memories are stored.

Another recent study shows that brain cells do not die as we age. In fact, when we are senior citizens, we will have the same number of brain cells as when we were teenagers.

Nearly 90% of people will age without any memory impairment caused by diseases or other medical conditions. The decline that most people will experience is due to a reduction in the number of dendrites in the brain, which form the connections between neurons in the brain.

Dendrites deteriorate because of disuse. The good news is that this can be avoided by staying mentally active. Solving brain teasers and playing games is one way to keep mentally fit.

Creativity : Story Building

You'll need a small group of people for this creativity exercise. Stand or sit in a circle and have someone start a story. For example: "It was a dark and stormy night..." Go around the circle with each person adding a new sentence.. Try to go around a few times before ending the story. The crazier and more creative the story, the better!

The Internet Movie Database is older than the first web browsers!

The Internet Movie Database is older than the first web browsers!

You’ve probably visited the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) multiple times before. For over 23 years, it’s been the #1 source for movie information with cast and crew info as well as trivia and goods.

However, an interesting thing about them is that they’ve existed since October 17th, 1990. That predates the first web browser by a couple of months!

As it turns out, IMDb existed before the time of web browsers as a USENET group called “rec.arts.movies” that collected a list of credits.

Although the name IMDb was a few years away, this group eventually became the IMDb we know and love.

If you didn’t know, the very first web browser was called WorldWideWeb and was released on December 25, 1990. The software later became known as Nexus to avoid confusion between the product and the WWW.

King Tut spontaneously combusted in his coffin!

King Tut spontaneously combusted in his coffin!

Researchers have recently looked more closely into the death of famous Egyptian King Tutankhamen. What they found is fascinating.

First, they determined his likely cause of death: A chariot accident. The injuries he had on one side of his body suggest that he was crushed by a chariot while he was on his knees.

The scientists speculate that he fell off his chariot while hunting and then another crashed into him, crushing his heart.

The most interesting part, though, is what happened after he died. When he was discovered in 1922, King Tut’s body had been badly burnt.

The fascinating part is that through their tests, they found that the body caught fire after it's sarcophagus was sealed. The theory is that the mummification went wrong and a combination of oxygen, embalming oils and linen caused the fire.

Chicken In Space!

Well… one chicken, and it’s made of rubber.

The students in the Bishop Union High School science club ‘Earth to Sky Calculus’ like to spice up their routine once in a while…which is probably why on one of their routine balloon launches they sent a rubber chicken named Camilla into space!

Camilla was outfitted in a knitted spacesuit with medical radiation badges attached.

The main purpose of sending these balloons into space is to monitor and test levels of radiation during solar storms.

Camilla reached an altitude of 120,000 ft. in a lunch box carrying four cameras, a cryogenic thermometer and two GPD trackers.

She spent about 90 minutes in the stratosphere before parachuting back to earth.

I love that this group of students spends their time conducting informative and amazing tests and experiments. Kudos to this awesome science club, for realizing that the sky is not the limit!

One of many of the incredible stories found in Ripley’s newest annuak, Dare To Look!

*You can read more about Camilla on page 235 of Dare to Look! Additional information here.

Quentin Tarantino owes EUR6000 in late fees for 2 movies he rented while shooting Inglorious Basterds!

Quentin Tarantino owes EUR6000 in late fees for 2 movies he rented while shooting Inglorious Basterds!

451 is a video store in Berlin. Opened in 2001, the store is a favorite amongst amateur and professional filmmakers.

According to the owners, 451's purpose, first and foremost, is providing entertainment for dreary Saturday evenings. They have over 23,000 films ranging from mainstream Hollywood flicks to art house favorites.

While Quentin Tarantino was filming his Academy Award nominated film "Inglourious Basterds," he rented two movies from 451. One was "Dishonored" and the other was "Shanghai Express."

Both starred Marlene Dietrich. Tarantino failed to return the movies on time though and started racking up late fees. As of now, he still hasn't returned the films and now owes 451 over 6,000 euros.

Arcade control for MAME

Arcade control for MAME

Growing up the 80’s, nothing was better than hitting the arcade with a pocket full of quarters. I’ve been a fan of the open source MAME (Multi Arcade Machine Emulator) project for some time. The emulator supports over 2000+ games from the original Asteriods on up and runs off any PC or Mac. The inputs are all mapped in as keyboard strokes and there are multiple controller card solutions to allow one to map OEM arcade buttons and joysticks in so they look like a USB keyboard to the PC. I orderd the i-Pac controller from Ultimarc and the sticks and buttons from Suzo Happ. All components and info on MAME are easy to find on the web. For the cabinet base and top, I constructed it out of cabinet grade oak laminate. For the top surface, I added a sheet of plexiglas for added durability. It was tricky drilling the holes without cracking the sheet of plexi. Took 3 times to get a sheet of plexi drilled successfully. Best advice is to go slow and easy.

Now time to enjoy my fav classic arcade games!

Thanks for looking!
