Reading comments by trolls can affect your ability to reason!

Reading comments by trolls can affect your ability to reason!

This probably isn't a huge shock to you, but trolls don't exactly bring out the best in us; however, science now supports what we all already know.

It seems that even if you do not participate in an online comment flame war, doing so much as reading a flame war can affect your ability to make rational decisions.

Scientists at George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication ran a survey of 1,183 people who had to read an article about the benefits and risks of nanotechnology.

They also had to read the comment section. Half had civil comments and the other half saw a full pro vs. Con flame war.

They did not participate in the comments themselves. People who read the flame war were more likely to have strong support or opposition about nanotechnology.

Meanwhile people who read the civil argument were able to reach a more civilized, down the middle approach.

The conclusion is that what other people say has a strong effect on how we reason, and when people have really passionate, irrational arguments about something, we get suckered into it and react in much the same way.

Learn more about this subject here.

Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Dec 18, 2013)

Those Seventies Shows

It's not what you think. Can you name these shows from the 1970's?

Creativity : Other Perspectives

People tend to quickly classify a situation, which causes them to think and respond in predictable ways. A creative thinker will think about situations from different perspectives. Try this group exercise to get people thinking about things in different ways.

1. Pass out three cards to everyone in the group and ask them to write down a different problem statement on each card.

2. Shuffle the cards and pass out two cards to each person, putting the remainder in the middle of the table. If anyone gets his own card or one he dislikes, he should exchange it for a new one from the pile in the middle.

3. People should now pair up and synthesize their four problem statements into one new one. Present this to the group.

4. The group should now come up with one new problem statement that incorporates the best parts of everything that has been presented.

This exercise is a good way to gain understanding of the problem and what directions the group should take to solve it.

Memory : Memory Consolidation

The reason that people need to sleep remains mostly a mystery, but many scientists believe that memory consolidation is part of it. Memory consolidation is the process by which recent memories are strengthened into long term memories. It is believed that memories are stored in the hippocampus for a short time, and that they are transferred to the cortex as part of consolidation.

An important thing to take away from this is that sleep reinforces learning. If you sleep after learning some material, you will remember it better than if you did not sleep. Thus, it is not advisable to study and take an exam on the same day. If you can sleep in between, the memories will have a chance to become consolidated and you will have better recall.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Dirge

dirge

noun :: A song or hymn of grief or lamentation, especially one intended to accompany a funeral.

"he mourner sat with bowed head, rocking her body heavily to and fro, and crying out in a high, strained voice that sounded like a dirge on some forlorn pipe." --Crane, Stephen

Mickey Mouse's fifth finger has saved Disney millions of Dollars!

Mickey Mouse's fifth finger has saved Disney millions of Dollars!

You're probably thinking that Mickey Mouse only has FOUR fingers, and you'd be correct.

Disney explained that the reason Mickey only has three fingers and a thumb is for both artistic and financial reasons.

Disney said if Mickey had five fingers, his hand would look weird, "five digits are too many for a mouse, it would look like a bunch of bananas."

The second reason for Mickey only having four fingers is financial.

A 6 1/2 minute short film contains about 45,000 drawings.

Disney says if you add up the time saved by NOT drawing that fifth finger, you'd find that the studio has saved millions of dollars.

Ancient Romans had tools like Swiss Army Knives! This is what they looked like.

Although the first Swiss Army Knife was built by a German company in 1891 is the most iconic example of a multitool, it wasn't the first one.

In fact, it wasn't even close to being the first one. The oldest surviving example dates back to the Roman Empire times.

Implements such as spoons and knives were bound together in knots of silver and iron.

Check out what they looked like on the pic to the right, and if you want to learn more about ancient multitools, check out the source

‘Man in the Iron Mask’ is based on an actual prisoner whose identity was never known! Learn the story

‘Man in the Iron Mask’ is based on an actual prisoner whose identity was never known! Learn the story

As bizarre as the story of the man in the iron mask is, it was actually inspired by a prisoner in France during the 17th century!

The prisoner was forced to wear a velvet mask on his face, and was never seen without it on!

In fact, to this day, nobody even knows who the prisoner was! What is known is that the prisoner was kept in an extremely comfortable cell.

There are many theories as to who the man actually was, some of which are more believable than others!

The philosopher Voltaire believed that the prisoner was actually the King's half brother, and the King wanted him to be hidden from the world!

Some believe that the prisoner was actually Louis XIV's own father, and he had him imprisoned because his father was trying to get money from him! Learn this incredibly mystery by clicking the source!
