A school in Tennessee made its students dress like Steve Urkel!

Sagging is a manner of wearing trousers which sag so that the top is significantly below the waist, sometimes revealing much of the underwear. Sagging is predominantly a male fashion. Women's wearing of low-rise jeans to reveal their G-string underwear—while fun—is not generally described as sagging.

In the fall of 2010 at Westside Middle School in Memphis, Tennessee, the policy on handling sagging pants is for students to pull them up or get "Urkeled", a reference to the character Steve Urkel of the 1990s television show Family Matters.

In this practice, teachers would pull their pants up and attach them there using zip ties. Students would also have their photo taken and posted on a board in the hallway, for all of their classmates to see. In an interview with WMC-TV, Principal Bobby White stated that the general idea is to fight pop culture with pop culture.

One teacher at the school claimed to have "Urkeled" up to 80 students per week, although after five weeks students got the message, and the number dropped to 18.

Creativity : Visualizations

Being able to create visualizations is an important skill for many of the mnemonic techniques that we have discussed for memory improvement. Being able to visualize ideas is also an important trait for the creative thinker. Practicing this skill is a good way to stretch your mental muscles and expand your imagination.

There are two factors that are used to describe your skill at making mental images.

Vividness

This relates to how clear your visualizations are in your mind. Are they in color? Are they in 3D? Do they include sounds, smells and tastes?

Controllability

This relates to how accurately you can control the imagery. Can you retain the images for as long as you want? Can you move the images in your mind? Can you modify your images without excessive effort? Concentration and practice will help you improve the controllability of your visualizations.

Whenever you want to practice, simply close your eyes and visualize an ordinary object. Try to make it as accurate and clear as possible. This not only gives you practice at visualizing, but also encourages you to pay more attention to your environment, which will improve your awareness of what is happening around you.

Memory : External Aids II

Some external aids only exist to remind you that there is something to remember. They don't actually tell you what it is. If you forget why you have a string around your finger, then it's not doing you much good. To fix this problem, you can use visual imagery to associate the aid with what you are trying to remember.

For example, if you need to remember to get gas on the drive home from work, you could put your watch on the wrong wrist. Then visualize yourself stuffing watches into your car's gas tank, or something else equally silly and memorable. Now every time you notice your watch being out of place, you will remember the silly scene and that you need to get gas.

One aid can even be used to remember multiple things. Simply use the link method to chain everything together, starting with the physical reminder. If you need to remember to get gas and pick up some bread and milk, you could use the above association to link your watch to gas. Then visualize yourself driving a loaf of bread away from the gas station while all of the sudden it starts raining milk.

These people still think cats are holy animals!

The domestic cat is a revered animal in Islam. Admired for it's cleanliness as well as for being loved by Prophet Muhammad, the cat is considered "the quintessential pet" by Muslims.

Cats have been venerated in the Near East since Egyptian times, a tradition adopted by Islam in a much modified form. Muhammad is reported to have said that "a love of cats is an aspect of faith"; according to other hadiths, he prohibited the persecution and killing of cats.

The prophet purportedly allowed a cat to give birth on his cloak, and cut off the sleeve of his prayer robe rather than wake his favorite cat, a female named Muezza, who was sleeping on it.

The rich really are above the law: Andrew Carnegie once killed 2000 people and got away with it!

The Johnstown Flood occurred on May 31, 1889. It was the result of the failure of the South Fork Dam situated on the Little Conemaugh River, 14 miles upstream of the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The flood was made worse by several days of extremely heavy rainfall.

The dam's failure unleashed a torrent of 20 million tons of water from the reservoir known as Lake Conemaugh. With a volumetric flow rate that temporarily equaled that of the Mississippi River, the flood killed 2,209 people and caused US$17 million of damage.

The club's members were some of the richest men in America—including Andrew Carnegie—but efforts to hold them legally responsible went nowhere.

Vin Diesel didn't get paid for The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift. But what he did get is awesome!

Vin Diesel doesn't just play Riddick, the intergalactic ex-con who can see in the dark, he owns the role—literally. And thanks to some shrewd maneuvers from the muscle-bound star, he has kept the franchise alive.

Diesel and Riddick writer-director David Twohy have overcome obstacles, but the key move came in 2006, when Universal asked Diesel to make a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Looking to recharge the series, the studio wanted to use his brief return in Tokyo Drift to signal he would be back center stage in a fourth movie. Diesel agreed, but instead of an acting fee, he demanded the studio give him and his One Race production company rights to the Riddick character.

Only 32% of men on the Titanic survived—but what about the women?

Only 32% of men on the Titanic survived—but what about the women?

If you don't know the story of the Titanic, you are likely some kind of hermit. To catch you up, the giant, "unsinkable" ship sunk on it's maiden voyage across the Atlantic after it hit an iceberg. Thousands of passengers died due in part to the ship not having enough lifeboats to save them all.

Women and children boarded the lifeboats first, but First Class passengers were given priority over Second and Third Class ones. Very few First Class women and children died - just 4 women and one child. On the other hand, 91 women and 55 children in Third Class died.

The Third Class women and children has a better chance of survival than First Class men, though. One hundred and five First Class male passengers died—only 32% of them survived. 49% percent of the Third Class female passengers survived. A woman in 3rd class was more likely to survive than a man in 1st!

You've heard of the New York Highline Park—But have you heard of the Lowline?

New York City is not known for having a lot of extra space. So good things sometimes happen in odd places.

That's why the Highline park, built on an old elevated train platform in the Meatpacking district of Manhattan's West Side, became such a hit.

And now a variation on unused space may get the park treatment as well. But this time it's underground.

The founders of the park plan, architect James Ramsey and Dan Barasch, have built a full-scale model of what they're calling the Lowline, a park in an abandoned subway station below Delancey Street.

To give New Yorkers a sense of what a subterranean play area would be like, the co-founders raised $155,000 so New Yorkers could try it out.

This is why America is fat—we buy Pop-Tarts and beer instead of survival supplies.

In general, you’d say hurricanes are bad for business. But apparently they’re good for some products—specifically, beer and strawberry Pop-Tarts.

Wal-Mart is good at learning all about it's customers through their buying habits, the company used some groovy software to figure out what Floridians bought as Hurricane Charley approached, and stocked it's stores accordingly for Hurricane Frances.

Survival gear and canned goods weren’t the only go-to categories. Whenever a natural disaster is about to strike, or pretty much at any time of year, the two most valuable products to Wal-Mart costumers seem to be both pop-tarts and beer.

They might not even care about clothing or anything else when beer and pop-tarts pop into their head.
