Being A Twentysomething In Los Angeles Vs. New York

We’re all making zero dollars, basically.

"Going out" in Los Angeles usually means hanging at a friend's house for dinner...or meeting up at your favorite neighborhood joint.

Learn why Tibetan Monks sleep sitting up!

Learn why Tibetan Monks sleep sitting up!

Tibetan Monks are a select group of people that dedicate their entire lives to spirituality, and living a life made up of certain rituals in a monastery.

Their lifestyle may seem strange to foreigners, but Tibetan Monks don't let other people's opinions change their cultures, even when it comes to sleeping.

As it turns out, Tibetan Monks sleep sitting up. It sounds like torture, but according to many people that have tried it - it's fantastic.

People who have tried sleeping upright like a monk (who by the way have special boxes for sleeping), have found that they never have a sore back or neck, it's impossible to snore, and they have more energy when they are awake!

The reason that monks sleep upright is actually a method of training their body to have better posture while meditating! Their box-beds are positioned so that they face their personal shrines!

Creativity : Motivation

Motivation is the feeling that causes us to perform actions. Hunger motivates us to eat, boredom motivates us to play and loneliness motivates us to make friends. Without motivation of some sort, we wouldn't accomplish much.

Motivation can be described as either direct or indirect. Direct motivation is like hunger. The action that you perform (eating) directly satisfies the need (hunger). Indirect motivation is a little more complicated because there is something in between the action and the fulfilled need. For example, money may be an indirect motivation to work hard. Money by itself is useless unless you spend it on something, like your rent or mortgage. Having a place to live is the motivation to work hard and money sits in the middle as an indirect motivator.

Motivation can also be described in terms of intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is something that you do for no other reason than your own enjoyment. Reading a book or having a hobby are good examples. Extrinsic motivation uses rewards, such as money, to encourage you to do something that you may not want to do on your own. A combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can be a powerful force. If you enjoy what you are doing and get rewarded for it, you are certainly going to keep doing it!

Intrinsic motivation and creativity are closely interrelated. If you don't enjoy what you are doing, your mind will not be in the right state to think creatively. Finding ways to turn dull tasks into interesting activities is an important skill to learn if you want to be creative in everything that you do. Our Mentalrobics activities can help you learn how to do this.

Memory : Absentmindedness

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you walked in there? Have you ever forgotten to give someone a telephone message? Ever forgotten an errand that you needed to run? Everyone experiences absentmindedness on a regular basis. Absentmindedness is caused by the failure to pay attention to what you need to do. It is usually caused by one of three different scenarios.

1. The thing you need to do is part of a habit or routine such that it requires very little attention.

2. You are distracted by something that takes your attention away from the thing you need to do.

3. You are trying to do two things at the same time.

It is impossible to completely overcome absentmindedness, but you can take steps to reduce it, such as getting organized, keeping written notes, repeating what you need to do out loud, or using mnemonics such as the Loci System to better organize your ideas.

During the Cold War, the US planned on dropping giant condoms labled "medium" onto the Soviet Union!

For some reason, throughout history, both Men and Women always try to be the ones with the biggest reproductive system of them all.

And by this I mean the biggest penis (in the case of men) or biggest boobs and butt (as in the case of women).

Apparently, those who have a smaller penis always seem to be the ones that get upset, because in their minds; size matters.

This is a great psychological approach when you don’t like someone, just like the U.S. Didn’t link the Soviets during the Cold War.

During the Cold War the US considered airdropping enormous condoms labeled “Medium” onto the Soviets, to demoralize them against an anatomically superior American Army. The plan was never carried out.

Living at a high altitude can protect you from certain diseases, but increases your risk of suicide!

Living at a high altitude can protect you from certain diseases, but increases your risk of suicide!

High-altitude living has it's pluses and it's drawbacks. Who wouldn't love to stand at the peak of a mountaintop and look down at the peaceful valley below? But there's a downside to all of that beauty and serenity.

According to a new study published in High Altitude Medicine and Biology, living at a high altitude is associated with a greater risk of suicide, which is not a good thing if you call the mountains of Colorado your home.

Researchers at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Ohio looked at the death rate over twenty years for counties in the United States after recording their altitude using information from the United States Geologic Survey. The results were eye opening.

The good news is people living in counties at a higher altitude had a lower mortality than people living at lower levels.
