Stress : Breathing

daily brain teaser

The breathing pattern of someone who is under a lot of stress is likely to be shallow and rapid. This type of breathing lowers the amount of oxygen that can get into your bloodstream and up to your brain. Decreased oxygen can cause dizziness, headaches and heightened feelings of stress. Learning how to breath properly is one of the most important things you can do to help relax yourself. It’s for this reason that controlled breathing is a part of almost every type of meditation practiced in the world.

Proper deep breathing starts with your diaphragm. Instead of puffing out your chest, try to puff our your belly as you breathe. Use your entire lung capacity. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Whenever you feel stressed, take a full five minutes to concentrate on deep breathes. This type of breathing will increase oxygen flow to your brain and release endorphins and hormones that act to sooth your nerves.

Memory : Link Party Trick

daily brain teaser

Once you get some practice using the Link System to remember lists of items, you can use it to perform an amazing party trick.

Tell everyone that you have a super memory and that you can remember twenty items after they are called out only once. Designate someone as the record keeper to confirm your feat.

Now, you should pick someone to call out an object. Create a visual association between this first object and yourself. This will help you remember the first item.

Now point to someone else and have them call out another object. In your mind, make a link between the two objects. Continue linking each object to the next until you have reached the end. Because you are controlling the pace that items are being called out, you can go as slow as you need to as you create your visual imagery. Naturally, the faster you go, the more impressive the trick will be.

Once you are done, it should be easy for you to recall all twenty items in order. Most people do not realize that anyone can have this type of memory with only a little practice.

Yum! Yum! Happy Face Potato

Today’s illusion is another submission from the Mighty Optical Illusions Facebook page. Thanks to Ruben for this one!

It’s not uncommon for people to see illusions in their food, especially faces. History is full of people who have claimed to see religious figures in their meals. Jesus, for instance, has been spotted in everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to pancakes to pierogis. Sometimes, though, the food illusions are a little simpler…like this happy face potato!

11733368_1446851775622724_1895729172_n

This little happy face potato is just grinning away, oblivious to everything around him! Honestly, though, I can’t imagine why he’s so happy in the first place. Does he not notice the hot deep fryers behind him? Is he unaware of his sizzling fate?

Maybe this little happy face potato was so cute that he was spared. Maybe the fry cook had a heart and decided not to chop him up and fry him into delicious greasy sticks of crunchy potato goodness. You think…?

Yeah, me neither. It’s just nice to imagine a story with a happy ending from time to time. So, goodbye happy face potato! I’m sure you’ll make a tasty treat for some lucky diner.

What did you think of today’s happy face potato illusion? Be sure to rate it below! If you know of any great optical illusions that might be a good fit for the site, ,be sure to send them our way via the Mighty Optical Illusions Facebook page!
