Today’s Daily Brain Teaser (Jun 29, 2015)

Self Anagram

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase. For example, rearrange “none” to get “neon”.

It is not considered an anagram if you exchange a letter with the same letter. For example, switching the n’s with each other in “noun” does not give an anagram.

Even though a word is not considered an anagram of itself, your task is to find a word that is an anagram of itself. If you can do the seemingly impossible once, you might as well find a second word that is an anagram of itself.

Check Braingle.com for the answer.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Inculcate

daily brain teaser

in-cul-cate

verb :: To teach and impress by frequent repetitions or admonitions; to urge on the mind.

“Lastly, I have endeavoured strongly to inculcate, that virtue and innocence can scarce ever be injured but by indiscretion; and that it is this alone which often betrays them into the snares that deceit and villainy spread for them.” –Fielding, Henry

Creativity : Peripheral Vision

daily brain teaser

Fix your vision on a nearby stationary object. Without moving your eyes, become aware of what is in your peripheral vision. Notice how things get fuzzier the further they are from the center. Now, close your eyes and try to recreate the scene from memory. Try to get a vivid image. Then, if you want you can draw it.

This visual exercise will help you become aware of the things that you do not normally see. It also helps improve your ability to reconstruct things in your mind’s eye. Visual skills are an important part of creativity.

Memory : Days of the Month

daily brain teaser

Here is a little trick to help you remember how many days are in each month. Hold out your hands in front of you, palm down, and make a fist. Now, look at your knuckles and the valleys in between them. Start with the left most knuckle and call it January, the valley adjacent to it is February, the next knuckle is March and so on down to December which is the second to last knuckle on your right hand. The spot between your two hands does not count as a valley. Since each knuckle is a high spot, it represents 31 days. Each valley is a low spot and therefore represents 30 days. The only exception is February, which has 28 days (29 in a leap year). You probably know this, but you can remember it because February is the little valley next to your little finger, so it is the smallest.

Another way to remember the number of days in each month is with the following rhyme, which you have probably heard, but have probably not remembered.

Thirty days hath September,

April, June, and November;

All the rest have thirty-one,

Except with February alone,

And that has twenty-eight days clear,

And twenty-nine in each leap year.

In Germany there are elevators with no doors that never stop. The riders must be ready to hop on at the right time or risk being “guillotined” by the lifts.

Europe was much bigger, with a massive area of land connecting England, France, Denmark and Germany as recently as 8,000 BC. The landmass was submerged by one of the largest landslides and tsunamis known.

The Headless Girl Illusion

headless girl illusion

The weekend’s almost over, but that’s no reason to lose your head! Or, maybe it is…

headless girl illusion

This headless girl illusion is an example of a perfectly posed photograph. It looks like this girl is not only headless, but also carrying her head under her arm. If I had to guess, I’d say that there are actually two people in this headless girl illusion. One is standing with her head down and her back to the camera, and the other one is standing in front of the first girl with her arm under the first girl’s head. The first girl’s legs are together, so the second girl’s legs are hidden behind them.

You have to admit that the resulting headless girl illusion is pretty great! I love the expression on the girl’s face too. She really doesn’t look all that happy about being headless. I might just round up the kids and try to create my own headless girl illusion!

If you loved this headless girl illusion, be sure to check out our other headless illusions! You’ll find a headless gymnast, a headless baseball player, and a headless boy!
