Memory : Memory Conformity

daily brain teaser

Two people who witness the same event may have different memories about what happened. This is because people pay attention to different things, and because memories fade and become distorted. If these people are allowed to talk, they can seriously distort each other’s memory of what happened. This phenomenon is called “memory conformity.” People who experience the same thing naturally want their memories to be the same, and as a result they can be talked out of their true memory and convinced to believe something that is false.

This frequently happens to married couples or family members who are trying to remember something that happened in the past. If the two people disagree on a particular detail, one person can often be convinced that their memory is wrong even if it isn’t.

Creativity : Clear Your Mind

daily brain teaser

Because we are always thinking, planning, and worrying about things, our minds tend to get cluttered with thoughts and it becomes difficult to focus all of our mental energies on a specific task. You can’t think creatively about a problem when half of your mind is thinking about what you want to eat for dinner or how bad the traffic is going to be when you leave work. Before you begin a task where you want to apply all of your creative ability, start by clearing out your mind.

There are many ways of doing this, try this one to start. Sitting comfortably, find a nearby object such as a pencil. Now, stare at it. Try to empty your mind of every thought that isn’t related to your object. Your whole universe is the pencil. What would it be like to be a pencil? Without touching it, close your eyes and imagine what a pencil feels like. Does it have a smell? A taste? If any unrelated thought enters your mind, refocus your attention onto your object. With practice you will become better at shutting out unrelated thoughts. Do this for at least 5 minutes (set a timer so you aren’t thinking about the time). You should find that your mind is more focused and has fewer distracting thoughts. This is the correct mindset for creative thinking.

It’s a…Dog With Antlers?!

Dog With Antlers

From time to time, people send us illusions through the Mighty Optical Illusions Facebook page. I’m not always able to put them up on the site, usually because they’ve been posted in the past. However, Gérard sent me a fun photo illusion yesterday of a dog with antlers. I haven’t found where it’s previously been posted on the site, so enjoy this dog with antlers!

Dog With Antlers

This is definitely a perfectly timed photograph. When you glance at it at first, it really does look like a dog with antlers. But, if you’re paying attention, you can see that the “antlers” really aren’t on the dog. In fact, they aren’t even antlers. It’s an illusion caused by a tree in the background. The dog just happens to be standing in the perfect spot in the foreground, so the tree is just behind his head giving the look of large majestic antlers!

A big thanks to Gérard for sending us this dog with antlers illusion! If you have an illusion you think we might like, be sure to send it our way via the Mighty Optical Illusions Facebook page! If it hasn’t been posted on the site in the past and it’s a good fit, we’ll probably use it for a daily illusion post.

If you liked this dog with antlers illusion, head over and see if you can spot the antlers and deer in this deer hunter’s illusion!
