Today's Daily Trivia Quiz (Jan 15, 2014)

Famous Landmarks

They are in different countries; some of them are natural, some of them are man-made, but they have one thing in common: they are all famous.

Creativity : Imagine What You Read

Whenever you are reading a novel, a magazine or a newspaper, make the extra effort to visualize what you are reading. Try to form a clear mental picture of the events about which you are reading. This will improve your ability to make good visualizations and improve your comprehension and enjoyment of the material. You can also do this if you listen to radio programs or audio books.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Desiccant

des-ic-cant

noun :: Substance used to absorb moisture.

"A little desiccant packet in the shipping container helps prevent mildew."

Memory : Remember it in the Morning

Do you ever remember something that you need to do right as you're about to fall asleep? After that, you can't fall asleep anymore because you are too worried that you'll forget it in the morning.

An easy way to solve this problem would be to have a pencil and paper next to your bed with a little flashlight. But if you don't have this handy, try putting something out of place. For example, throw a magazine or wadded tissue at the door. When you wake up in the morning, you'll notice the out-of-place item and be reminded of what you almost forgot.

You can use this technique for other situations besides falling asleep at night. For example, if you are in the car and need to remember something but can't write it down, open the glove box or ashtray and leave it open. When you park, it will be a reminder.

Mindy Kaling's College Comic Strips At Dartmouth

Things haven’t changed that much in Hanover since 2001.

Before writing and starring in The Office and The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling drew a campus comic strip for The Dartmouth called "Badly Drawn Girl." Most of them poked fun of campus institutions and Webster Ave frat culture, which still have their share of problems today. Kaling's 1999 Hanover doesn't seem that different from the mid-2000s version I knew. And though crudely drawn, the comic was not without its fans.

"Mindy Chokalingam '01, comic strip wonder, I don't know you, but consider yourself my hero," wrote graduating senior Abbye Meyer in a column called I Love Badly Drawn Girl.

The strip ran daily between 1999 and 2001.

These kids spent two years recreating Toy Story, frame by frame—watch it here!

A full-length remake of the original Toy Story was shot scene-by-scene using real toys by Jonason Pauley and Jesse Perrottato over the past two and a half years. That is some serious commitment.

The project took them 2.5 years to finish, and with a lots of patience they were able to create an 80 minute film using their toys and imagination and that closely resembles the original Toy Story movie.

If you have 80 minutes to spare, make sure you check the source link so that you watch the movie these two awesome kids made.

Jack Nicholson played two characters in Mars Attack, and both were killed. Know why?

Jack Nicholson played two characters in Mars Attack, and both were killed. Know why?

Mars Attacks! Is a 1996 American science fiction-comedy film directed by Tim Burton and written by Jonathan Gems.

Based on the cult trading card series of the same name, the film was also inspired in part by a parody bit that Howard Stern did in the 1980s on WNBC. The premise involved Martians attacking and the only way to kill them was to play Slim Whitman songs to make their heads explode.

This movie has a star studded cast, including Jack Nicholson, Natalie Portman, Michael J. Fox, and Sarah Jessica Parker, among many others.

There was a dispute when it came to Jack Nicholson dying in the movie between Warner Bros and Tim Burton.

Warner Bros executives didn't like the idea of Tim Burton killing off Jack Nicholson's character in the movie. Mars Attacks! In response, Burton had Nicholson then play two characters and killed off both of them.

North Korea has a museum that blames the USA for mass murder!

The Sinchon Museum of United States War Atrocities is located in Sinchon, North Korea, and is dedicated to preserving and displaying artifacts from the Sinchon Massacre. The Sinchon Massacre wasmass murder of Communist sympathizers and North Korean civilians by during the Korean War, the causes of which are disputed.

The Sinchon Museum of United States War Atrocities remembers the deaths of over 35,000 people in a series of events occurring from October 17 to November 7, 1950 when the area was occupied by the United States.

Independent parties reported that both Communists and anti-Communist vigilantes were engaging in wholesale slaughter throughout the area, and that the United States Army took the city and failed to prevent the perpetuation of the civilian murders, but did not participate themselves.

The museum complex consists of several buildings, an air raid shelter, and a gravesite. The museum is housed in the former Sinchon County Party Committee building.

In the leadup to Hurricane Katrina, the NWS predicted the damage to come. So why didn't we listen?

As the world saw in its aftermath, Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area. Lack of emergency response made the problem worse, but weather authorities knew how bad it was going to be before the storm swept in. In fact, their warning emergency bulletin was much more descriptive (and scary) than usual.

On August 28, 2005, the National Weather Service of New Orleans issued a warning detailing the likely effects of the hurricane. The bulletin included descriptions like "all gabled roofs will fail...leaving those homes severely damaged or destroyed"; "water shortages will make human suffering incredible by modern standards"; and "livestock left exposed to the winds will be killed."
