Game Chip Holder

I made this case to hold a set of custom poker chips for a game that my wife and I play. If any of you have played “Power Grid”, you’ll probably agree that working with the paper money included with the game can be a bit of a hassle.

I made the poker chips using cheap blanks and some mailing labels. The case itself is made from two lengths of 1X6 walnut with maple spacers. I bored the holes using a 40mm forstner bit. The whole assembly was then wrapped with some scrap walnut strips with the ends bored to show the chips inside. Sanded and finished with 3 coats of amber shellac.

The interior sanding is quite rough, but generally speaking I’m happy with how it turned out. I chose the dimensions of the case so that it would fit inside the game box. Instead, I think this looks just fine sitting on the shelf.

Treasure Chest For Card Game

We play an awesome game called Munchkin our house. A while back we got a version called Munchkin Booty, a pirate-themed set. Since then, we’ve added two more expansions and a dire situation occurred. Nothing big enough to store all the cards, rulebooks and paraphernalia. So I got some inspiration out of the closet, a ton of reclaimed wood out of the back of my shop and took a few months (whenever there was free time) to cobble this baby together.

Made from repurposed cheap-o bunkbed wood (both pine and birch, plywood from a desk, handles from a cabinet, and brand-new (subsequently battered) hinges.

I used a hammer, saw, rasps and rocks to beat the crud out of this thing, gouge it and make it look like it had been through a few shipwrecks, battles and drunken maroonings on a desert isle before being dug up and put to use.

Finished with stain made from coffee, aniline dye, Minwax oak stain and then Poly clear coat.
