King John of Bohemia was a warrior and died in battle despite being blind!

King John of Bohemia (who was also the Count of Luxembourg and King of Poland) in the 1300s was also known as "John the Blind."

Yes, you guessed it, John was blind. This didn't stop him from acting courageously as any King should though.

John was the son of Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII and his wife Margaret of Brabant. When he was still in his teens, he became the King of Bohemia.

When he was around 40 years old, John went blind from ophthalmia. Attempted treatments to reverse the effects of the disease did not work.

John continued to rule though. When the Hundred Years War broke out in 1337, he allied with the King of France. When the Battle of Crecy began in 1346, John was 50 years old.

Despite his disability, he insisted on fighting. He was killed during the fighting. After his death, the saying "to fight like King John of Bohemia" became popular and meant "to fight blindly."

Creativity : Take it Apart

Elaborating on an existing idea is a great way to come up with new and better ideas. One way to do this is by taking an idea apart and looking at its components. By looking at one part at a time, you might be able to ignore your preconceived notions about the idea and come up with some interesting improvements.

Start by listing the attributes of the idea. Just the act of listing the individual pieces will get your mind thinking about improvements or modifications. For example, if someone asked you to design a better bird feeder, you might be at a loss about where to start. It's a little overwhelming to tackle a large project all at once. To take it apart, you might list the individual attributes like this:

1. Hook for hanging

2. Container for seeds

3. Covering to shield feeder from rain

4. Perch for birds to sit on

5. Tray to collect fallen seeds

6. Device to prevent squirrels from eating seeds

Now you can look at the individual components and work on them in isolation. Maybe you could focus on making a really good perch for a certain type of bird, or maybe you would combine the rain shield and seed container in some interesting way. By taking your idea apart into its pieces, you will be able to innovate more easily and come up with interesting ideas.

Memory : Your Memory

"Your Memory : How It Works and How to Improve It" is an excellent book by Kenneth Higbee. He explains many different memory systems and how they can be applied to your daily needs. One exceptional quality of this book is that it objectively compares the different systems and discusses scientific research that has been conducted about memory.

A book that was rejected by 121 publishers has sold 5 million copies worldwide!

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values is a 1974 philosophical novel, the first of Robert M. Pirsig's texts in which he explores his Metaphysics of Quality.

The title is an apparent play on the title of the book Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel. In it's introduction, Pirsig explains that, despite it's title, "it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It's not very factual onmotorcycles, either."

The book is generally regarded as an American cultural icon in literature.

The book sold 5 million copies worldwide. It was originally rejected by 121 publishers, more than any other bestselling book, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

Gas gauges lie to us to make us feel better

Gas gauges lie to us to make us feel better

These days, your gas gauge may seem like the most important part of your car. Or at least the most consistently expensive.

Gas prices just keep climbing so now more than ever, people are paying attention to their gauges. And it turns out the gauges are lying.

They stay longer on full or "F" and then gradually increase their decrease so to speak. They needle moves down quicker and quicker as it approaches empty or "E."

When it finally gets to empty, it again sits there for a little while before it alerts the driver that they need to fill up the tank.

This behavior is in response to consumer surveys. Obviously people like to have a full tank for as long as possible. And they don't really want to be out of gas when their gauge hits E.

They want a little cushion time. So car companies have adapted to these desires. Just know though, your gauge is lying to you.

Cloud Atlas is the most expensive independent movie of all time!

Cloud Atlas is the most expensive independent movie of all time!

Cloud Atlas was released in 2012 and polarized audiences. The movie is epic in scale and covers six different story lines during six different times.

Based on David Mitchell’s 2004 book of the same title, Cloud Atlas polarized critics. Some claimed it was one of the best movies they had ever seen, while others said it was nonsensical and overwhelming.

Regardless of the message, one truly amazing fact about Cloud Atlas is just how expensive it was!

The movie ended up being $102 million! Now this doesn’t sound too expensive when compared to some huge movies like Harry Potter, but you have to remember big blockbusters are financed by huge film corporations.

Cloud Atlas was financed completely independently, meaning from independent donors! Several German companies contributed donations, in addition to $20 million from the German government!

The Wachowskis, who previously created the Matrix, put the whole thing together, and even contributed their own money!

Just to put that into relative terms, Paranormal Activity was originally an independent movie and cost around $15,000! A far cry from the $102 million for Cloud Atlas!

Malawi has the worst doctor to patient ratio in the world. There's only 1 for every 50,000 people!

Malawi has the worst doctor to patient ratio in the world. There's only 1 for every 50,000 people!

The doctor to patient ratio represents the number of doctors in a country compared to the number of citizens.

Countries with a lower ratio generally have better medical care. At the top of the list is surprisingly Cuba, with a ratio of 1: 170.

This means that technically every doctor would have to care for only 170 people. Poorer African countries generally round out the bottom of the list, with Malawi stark last at 1:50,000!

One doctor caring for 50,000 people is impossible, so recently efforts are being made to disperse medical knowledge and increase the amount of doctors.

Unfortunately, Malawi and other African countries are extremely poor and very corrupt. Funds that should be directed toward medical care are often taken for personal gain by corrupt government officials.

PoWM Halloween: Is It A Costume Part 7

Okay, looks like we’ve got a a few kings of pop Michael Jackson guys and what I think might be Tupac? Is that racists that I can’t tell for sure? Anyway, is this everyday PeopleOfWalmart gear or Halloween costumes? My guess is everyday wear because you would think an MJ halloween costume would involve some more perverted humor. Just my thought.

Okay this one is going to be tough. On one hand you’ve got the fact that superhero costumes are ridiculously popular at Halloween time. Everyone wants to be a superhero. But on the other hand I’ve seen people dressed up as superheros at Walmart on a Tuesday in April, so who the hell really knows. Hmmmm, I’m not sure what you guys think but my gut says these two are just hot enough to be out of total nerd range and are likely dressed up for Halloween and not just for kicks. What do you think?
