There are dogs that smell seizures 30 minutes before they happen! What do they do?

Seizure response dogs are a special type of service dog, specifically trained to help someone who has epilepsy or a seizure disorder.

The theory is that dogs can smell a seizure coming on about 30 minutes in advance (prediction), and after the seizure they can respond (response), and either action is helpful to the person with a disability. It however is unclear if dogs can actually predict seizures.

Some of the tasks that these dogs carry are summoning help, pulling potentially dangerous objects away from the person’s bod, attempting to rouse the unconscious handler during or after a seizure, providing physical support, etc.

Additionally, some dogs may develop the ability to sense an impending seizure. This behavior is usually reported to have arisen spontaneously and developed over a period of time.

Memory : Over-learning

Over-learning is a simple technique that helps you improve your memory. Over-learning is the repetitive study of something until it becomes second nature. Even after you think you have learned something, if you continue to study it, you reinforce it in your memory. This practice not only strengthens learning, but it also improves recall speed.

Over-learning is the idea behind flashcards, but it can be useful for more things than just your math quiz. Try something as simple as a list of items on a piece of paper that you carry with you. Read through the list several times a day while waiting for the elevator, at a stoplight, in line at a store, before going to sleep, etc. You will learn these items better and recall them more quickly.

Buffalo Hump wasn't the Comanche war chief's real name. What was it?

Buffalo Hump was a Native American War Chief of the Penateka band of the Comanche Indians.

Little is known of Buffalo Hump's early life. He became a historically important figure when, angered by the Council House fight of 1840, he led a group of Comanches, mostly his own band plus allies from various other Comanche bands, in the Great Raid of 1840.

Their goal was to get revenge on the Texans who had killed thirty members of a delegation of Comanche Chiefs when these had been under a flag of truce for negotiations.

Buffalo Hump wasn't the Comanche war chief's real name. Americans refused to call him by his actual name which actually meant “erection that won’t go down”.

Tom Riddle's name in Harry Potter was changed in translations to keep the anagram! Here's some examples.

Tom Riddle's name in Harry Potter was changed in translations to keep the anagram! Here's some examples.

The Harry Potter series of fantasy novels by J. K. Rowling have become some of the most widely read works of children's literature in history, with readers of all ages and in many countries.

For an authorized translation, the publisher must first negotiate and sign a contract with the author's agents, The Blair Partnership. A list of authorized publishers can be read on J. K. Rowling’s website. The publishers select translators locally.

Translators were not granted access to the books before their official release date in English; hence, translation could start only after the English editions had been published, creating a lag of several months before the translations was made available.

The translations of Harry Potter preserved the Tom Riddle/I Am Voldemort anagram. To do so, his first name in the Danish is "Romeo", his middle name in the French is "Elvis”, and his name in Slovenia is "Mark Neelstein." In some Spanish translations, it was "Tom Sorvolo Ryddle."

A human-cow hybrid clone was created in 1998 by Advanced Cell Technologies!

The world's first human clone of an adult was made by an American biotechnology company in Massachusetts, Advanced Cell Technology.

They took a cell from Dr. Jose Cibelli, a research scientist and combined it with a cow’s egg from which the genes had already been removed. This occurred in 1998.

The genes activated and the egg began to divide in the normal way up to the 32 cell stage at which it was destroyed.

If the clone had been allowed to continue beyond implantation it would have developed as Dr. Cibelli's identical twin. Technically 1% of the human clone genes would have belonged to the cow.

Common duct tape can do many things. Don't try to use it for actual duct work or this may happen.

Common duct tape can do many things. Don't try to use it for actual duct work or this may happen.

Duct tape is cloth- or scrim-backed pressure-sensitive tape often coated with polyethylene. There are a variety of constructions using different backings and adhesives.

One variation is gaffer tape designed to be cleanly removed, while duct tape is not.

Duct tape should not be confused with special tapes actually designed for sealing heating and ventilation ducts.

To provide laboratory data about which sealants and tapes last, and which are likely to fail, research was conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Environmental Energy Technologies Division.

Their major conclusion was that one should not use common duct tape to seal ducts (they had defined duct tape as any fabric-based tape with rubber adhesive).

The testing done shows that under challenging but realistic conditions, common duct tapes become brittle and may fail.

One of Lyndon B. Johnson's most famous quotes was not originally his! Which one?

One of Lyndon B. Johnson's most famous quotes was not originally his! Which one?

Most famous for his scorched-earth tactics in the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman brought that same military philosophy to the West, where he shaped a policy and strategy that would finally subjugate all the native peoples of the plains.

Sherman became general commander of the United States Army in 1869, and in this position directed a series of campaigns that finally crushed Indian resistance across the plains.

He perceived clearly the devastating effectiveness of striking at the economic basis of the Plains Indians' lives.

Sherman retired from the army in 1884 and famously refused to become a candidate for president, saying "If nominated I will not run; if elected I will not serve."

This quote is incorrectly attributed to Lyndon B. Johnson during his retirement speech.

Who made Neil Armstrong's space suit? The answer is kinda hilarious.

Who made Neil Armstrong's space suit? The answer is kinda hilarious.

No one knows what Columbus was wearing when he set foot in the New World, but on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong took his “one giant leap” onto the Moon, he was clad in a custom-made spacesuit.

The model, A7L, serial number 056. Its cost, estimated at the time as $100,000 (more than $670,000 today), sounds high only if you think of it as couture.

In reality, once helmet, gloves and an oxygen-supplying backpack were added, it was a wearable spacecraft.

For the suit’s creator, the International Latex Corporation in Dover, Delaware, the toughest challenge was to contain the pressure necessary to support life (about 3.75 pounds per square inch of pure oxygen), while maintaining enough flexibility to afford freedom of motion.

A division of the company that manufactured Playtex bras and girdles, ILC had engineers who understood a thing or two about rubber garments.

The bra manufacturer was able to send it's new clothing to outer space!

Woodworking Show Baltimore 2014

Well almost exactly a year after my last post regarding the last Woodworking Show. I again attended and returned home yesterday.

This year’s started a bit late for me as due to weather I had to work in the morning on Friday and did not get there until later in the afternoon. However I made up for it by staying until they turned the lights out. I was attending a very small seminar by Bradly McAllister on selling your work. He covered some basic pointers and such. Great guy and enjoyed talking to him then and later in the weekend. Quite happy that he did a hands on session for a few kids as Craft Supplies is not with the show at this time. So that means there is no hands on for the crowd. However, I did get there earlier enough to participate in the CNC demonstration by Legacy Woodworking.

This is what he had programmed in. We did the complete piece on 2 different machines (one to do the labyrinth the other to cut the plexi and do the engraving) and it took all of about 10 minutes. For my games it is certainly something to entertain in the future. But right now the price is a bit out of my league.

It was great to meet up with a few LumberJocks and catch up.

I of course did some shopping.

First things I planned to focus on was my new lathe, so I bought a few tools, a Ron Brown top making set (which included his Speed Gouge), and some finishing products to try. Looking forward to putting them to use, as soon as the lathe is set up.. but that is another blog coming soon.

Also purchased some Dust collection pieces. The larger one you see is for my Table saw and I will post how that worked in my other blog. I am happy to say though that I already have it installed. I of course bought a lot of smaller stuff as well. A great deal on the Sanding Paper in 4 different grits for my table sander. certainly looking forward to putting that to use in smoothing out some of my games on that instead of by hand.

All in all a decent show, even though I thought some of the seminars were a bit redundant from previous years.
