Simple bookshelf with a twist

Simple bookshelf with a twist

My wife’s grandfather (who died before I met my wife – I really wish I had the chance to meet that man) made book shelf’s for each of his grandchildren (and probably children too). We were talking about his craftsmanship one day when my sister-in-law suggested a book shelf that would hold the little wooden puzzles for kids as a little twist.

I thought to myself, hmmm – I wonder what that would look like. So after a couple of days of doodling around on some paper, and the night before my nieces birthday party I came up with this:

It was pretty exciting carrying that in for a 3 year old that knew exactly what to do with it. By the time I set it down, she already had started bringing over her puzzles and books from the over-flowing book shelf she was using.

The kicker for me was this was the first time I had undertaken a project like this. I had never build anything out of wood, but always watched my parents growing up (both my mom and dad are skilled with their hands). I figured “woodworking has to be genetic” so I promised that I would bring something, and built this the night before her party! With only a table saw… Keeping that in mind, I think I did alright.

I included the only picture that I have during the build, when I had glued everything together. I had it “clamped” with tie down straps. I really had (have) no tools yet!

But now I have the bug, and I want to build so many more things!

Close Shave

Homer had suffered a bizarre accident that affected his eyesight. The doctor said it would be temporary, but for the next 4 weeks, he had to adjust how he did some things. The accident had affected his focal length. He was only able to focus on objects that were 6 or more feet away from him, anything closer than 6 feet was just a blur.

Homer was used to shaving up close in front of his bathroom mirror. Now after the accident, how close could Homer get to the mirror to see his face clearly enough to shave?

Creativity : Icebreaker: Visual Puns

Icebreakers are little exercises that help relax tensions and loosen up a formal atmosphere in a meeting where you want to have creative ideas and group participation.

The "Visual Puns" game is a fun activity that gets people thinking creatively. Pick an ordinary object such as a stapler or trashcan. As you pass the object around the room, each person must think of something that the object looks or acts like. For example, a stapler could be an alligator, some castanets or a catapult. A trashcan could be a hat, a soup bowl or a swimming pool for a beetle. Let your imaginations run wild and encourage wild ideas.

Memory : Repressed Memories

A repressed memory is one that is still stored in the brain, but is not accessible by the conscious mind. Because these memories are usual of traumatic events, the theory is that the mind represses them to protect the individual from undue psychological stress. When a repressed memory is brought back into consciousness, it is called a recovered memory.

Due to the relative ease with which a practitioner can intentionally or unintentionally implant false memories via the power of suggestion, there is currently a great debate among psychologists as to whether or not repressed memories actually exist.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Constringe

con-stringe

verb :: To draw together; to contract; to force to contract itself; to constrict; to cause to shrink.

"Licking a lemon will cause your lips to constringe."
