Today's Daily Brain Teaser (Dec 05, 2013)

Going Crackers

A cracker company was very mad when they heard the results from their cracker survey. The result said that the customers would prefer crackers to nothing at all. The same customers think that donuts are better than everything else.

A new employee at the company had to tell their boss the bad news, but he saw a window of opportunity to get a promotion. When he got to his boss, he told him that the customers really preferred crackers to donuts.

How did he come up with that?

Check Braingle.com for the answer.

If Walmart was a country it would be bigger than 95 actual countries!

If Walmart was a country it would be bigger than 95 actual countries!

When it comes to companies, it can be hard to get a feel for their size. They may say they're "big," but what does that actually mean? Consider Walmart, for example.

This year, for the seventh time in the past decade, Fortune magazine awarded the retailer the No. 1 slot on it's annual list of the 500 largest American companies, as measured by revenues.

Fortune reports that 2.1 million people work at Walmart, which means there are about as many Walmart employees sprinkled across the globe as there are people living in the African country of Namibia.

If Walmart and it's employees were a country they would be, population-wise, bigger than 95 actual countries and hold the 25th largest economy in the world.

Memory : Wake Up and Smell...

Take one of your scent canisters and place it next to your bed. When you wake up in the morning, take a deep whiff from the container. This will change up your morning routine and get new neurons firing in new ways. Activating new neural pathways is a great way to keep your mind in shape.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Macabre

ma-ca-bre

adj :: Gruesome. Suggesting death.

"The novel was full of macabre tales of war and plague."

Creativity : Alternate Solutions

When we are confronted with a problem, we typically look for a solution by thinking about past problems that we have encountered. Because a certain solution worked last time, we are confident that it is the best. This is uncreative thinking.

A creative thinker thinks about the problem from many different angles. This gives them a number of possible solutions to choose from, which helps them find a unique elegant solution.

The next time you are confronted with a problem (even a very tiny one), instead of jumping to the first obvious solution, take a step back and see if you can find several alternatives. At first this is going to be difficult to do, but with practice you will be able to come up with many alternative solutions to your daily problems.

Is something wrong with me?

I am fairly new to woodworking but I noticed I go to websites like Woodcraft or Lee Valley or other sites, I am drooling over random tools that I have no use for a the moment and current projects. I see things like random marking gauges, spokeshaves, handplanes and even power tools and I am like “Ooo awww I want that, not sure what I would use it for, but I would like to have that…” The odd thing is, I just turned 21 and a few years ago I would do the same over new games and stuff that would come out, but now when I even think about games or playing games I am like ehh not really. Now days I find walking down the lumber isle at Lowes more exciting than walking down the entertainment and electronic isles at Wal-Mart. I use to spend a lot of time on the computer on Facebook and playing games, now my most visited pages are Well Facebook still is top since I check it daily to keep up with friends and check out the woodworking, blacksmithing, and artifact hunting group pages I am on, but my 2nd most visited is Lumberjocks, then the rest are literally sites to look up tools and other items. (Amazon, Ebay, Woodcraft, Acme Tool, Lowes, then Home Depot). I just think it is crazy how fast once I started the hobby and interest in woodworking that it has changed me in so many ways. I use to like in games where I was in control and could make decisions and use my imagination. Now I found out I can do the same with woodworking and it is so much more rewarding! You have nothing to show for how much time you spend on a game, but when you do woodworking, the more time you spend the more you have to show for it and more to be proud of. You make stuff, you use your imagination, you build skills that you can use for life, you can help people when they need something, you can make gifts, and you can make things for your two sweet nieces that most your wood working is centered around haha. If someone looked into my work area they would probably wonder why I have a small wooden desk, small wooden bench, and plans and lumber for a small seesaw which I haven’t gotten to yet. I just love woodworking and everything about it. I like power tools and the hand tools. I like the simple stuff and the more advanced. The rustic, traditional, and modern types. I just don’t know why I want my hands on every tool I see haha. I am like the cookie monster, but with tools! Anyone else have this problem?

Stephen Colbert teaches Sunday school at his church!

Stephen Colbert teaches Sunday school at his church!

Most of us have seen Stephen Colbert’s show and have ended up delighted with his great sarcastic humor. However, there are plenty of things that you might not know about this man.

Although, by his own account, he was not particularly political before joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert has described himself as a Democrat according to a 2004 interview.

In an interview at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Institute of Politics, he stated that he has "no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies."

Also, Colbert is a practicing and devoted Roman Catholic and a Sunday school teacher. If his schedule allows him to do so, he teaches little kids about his faith and helps them to find spiritual peace at his local church.

In the 50s, a judge tried to ban a comic book. Why? It featured a black character!

Racism has always been one of our society’s biggest issues, sadly, it comes from a long way back before even our parents were born.

Racism has always been there, luckily, laws have changed and we don’t see it as often as we used to, however, when people who worked for “law & justice” weren’t controlled, they were able to commit racist acts without receiving any kind of punishment.

For example, in the 1950s a judge tried to ban a science fiction comic because it featured a black character. That’s something you would not see in court nowadays, especially with such an amazing comic like “Incredible Science Fiction”.

If you’d like to see more of this comic, check out the source link.

Sid Vicious was a terrible bassist. The Sex Pistols had to do this to keep him from ruining their shows.

Sid Vicious (real name: John Simon Ritchie) was the last member to join the notorious band the Sex Pistols in 1977.

He came on as the bassist after they fired their original one. Vicious wasn't a particularly talented musician though.

In fact, he was so bad that his bandmates would often unplug his amplifier while he was playing onstage.

He did have a rockstar attitude though. He embodied punk. Vicious started dating an American girl named Nancy Spungen. They were very much in love but not very good for one another.

Their joint heroin addiction often lead to bouts of violence between them. Spungen was stabbed to death in October 1978 in a series of mysterious circumstances. Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979.

If you've ever said "Money is the root of all evil," you completely missed the point of the original phrase. Here's why

Most of us have heard the saying "money is the root of all evil." Essentially, this means that money is behind all the evil in the world - the motivation, the goal, the means. However, this saying, while some may believe it is true, is actually a misquotation.

The phrase comes from the Bible, specifically Timothy 6:1-12. The actual saying is "the love of money is the root of all evil." And if you want to get technical with the translation, it's "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." All of these phrases may sound the same at first glance. They aren't though.

The real translation puts the focus on the person because someone has to love money in order for it to be evil. Money itself is not inherently evil. And anyone could love money - rich or poor.

The Nigerian version of the Cookie Monster craves yams!

The Nigerian version of the Cookie Monster craves yams!

In America, Sesame Street has Cookie Monster. Nowadays, because of childhood obesity, he's Veggie Monster or something like that.

But originally, he was Cookie Monster. A grouchy, blue muppet obsessed with eating cookies. I can relate.

Did you know there is a Sesame Street in Nigeria. Yep, that's right! In fact, there are over 20 versions of Sesame Street in countries across the world.

Nigeria has it's own version of cookie monster too - Zobi the Yam Monster.

Since children in Nigeria don't often eat cookies, the show creators decided to make Zobi obsessed with one of the country's staple foods, yams. He often shouts "me eat yam!"

Zobi also drives a cab and educates children about malaria. And Nigerian Sesame Street stars Kami, the first HIV-positive muppet.
