Bogota had a big jaywalking problem. We guarantee you'll laugh at the mayor's solution.

If you're from Latin America (like I am), you'll know that jaywalking is a pretty big problem there.

Even when people have perfectly good and safe ways to cross the streets, they'll still jaywalk, leading to more traffic and less safety.

This is exactly one of the problems that Antanas Mockus, a political newbie elected to be mayor of Bogota, decided to tackle.

He realized that one of the most powerful motivators for people was social pressure.

This gave him a crazy, but effective idea. He hired mimes to hang out on busy intersections. Anytime they saw a jaywalker, they would follow them around, mimic them and mock their behavior. What was the result?

The people being mocked obviously felt embarrassed and didn't do it again. But it also had another effect: The bystanders didn't want to be mocked themselves, so they started obeying pedestrian rules.

The program was so successful that the program was expanded from 20 mimes to over 400! This mayor has a lot of really fun and interesting ideas to solve problems. To read more about the way he governs, read the source.

She is one of the world's best runners because her brain cannot tell her how far she's got left to run!

Diane van Deren is what is called an "ultra runner." She can run for days on end without sleep, covering hundreds of miles.

She used to only run to help deal with epileptic seizures. Eventually, she had brain surgery to prevent the seizures entirely.

The surgery removed a kiwi sized piece of her brain. Since her 1997 surgery, she has become one of the world's greatest ultra runners- she's competed in races measuring 100 miles or more.

She even won the Yukon Arctic Ultra 300, a 430 mile trek in the freezing snow. Her surgery resulted in her brain having much difficulty making sense of the passage of time.

As a result, she has no idea how long she's been running, which proves to be a great advantage. You can read more about her here

This lie is in the cover of every Harry Potter book.

This lie is in the cover of every Harry Potter book.

According to her birth certificate, Joanne Rowling doesn't have a middle name.

The use of her initials instead of her full first name was a marketing ploy designed to make her work acceptable to boys.

Boys actively choose to not to read books written by women.

Her publicists have always said her full name was Joanne Kathleen Rowling, but a copy of her birth certificate obtained by a British newspaper in 2001 lacks a middle name at all.

Rowling was born in 1965 near Bristol, England. She was a single mother on welfare when she began writing the Harry Potter series.

In an interview, Rowling said that it was the publisher's idea to call her J K Rowling and that they could have called her Enid Snodgrass for all she cared, so long as her book was published.

Her books are an international sensation and major motion pictures popular worldwide. She is an inspiration to women everywhere for her major accomplishments and perseverance.

Caligula's name was actually not Caligula!

Caligula's name was actually not Caligula!

Caligula was Roman Emperorfrom 37 AD to 41 AD. Caligula was a member of the house of rulers conventionally known as the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

Caligula's father Germanicus, the nephew and adopted son of Emperor Tiberius, was a very successful general and one of Rome's most beloved public figures.

The young Gaius earned the nickname Caligula, which stands for "little soldier's boot", the diminutive form of caliga, from his father's soldiers while accompanying him during his campaigns in Germania.

There are few surviving sources on Caligula's reign, although he is described as a noble and moderate ruler during the first six months of his rule.

After this, the sources focus upon his cruelty, extravagance and sexual perversity, presenting him as an insane tyrant.

The story behind Nick Jr.'s Little Bill is tragic and inspiring at the same time.

The story behind Nick Jr.'s Little Bill is tragic and inspiring at the same time.

Little Bill is a character created by Bill Cosby that first appeared in a series of children's books. The books, and eventual TV show are meant to teach kids a moral lesson.

The story behind the character, however, is marred with tragedy. Bill Cosby based the character in the loving memory of his dead son, Ennis.

Ennis William Cosby, a graduate student and aspiring teacher, was fatally shot in an attempted robbery in Los Angeles in 1997.

On the evening of January 16, 1997, Cosby, on break from school, was driving to visit a friend when his car developed a flat tire on Interstate 405 in Los Angeles. He telephoned his friend, who drove out to assist him.

While Cosby changed the tire, his friend remained in her own car. An armed man approached her driver-side window, causing her to move the vehicle twenty to fifty feet. When she returned, she discovered that Cosby had been shot in the head.

Bill Cosby created Little Bill to honor his son's memory. Little Bill uses "Hello, Friend" as a catchphrase, which Ennis used all the time.

Bill himself also adopted the phrase himself and even created a charity called "Hello Friend" to help people with learning disabilities.

Most flowers need open air to thrive. Not this one. This one grows underground.

Rhizanthella gardneri, also known as Western Underground Orchid, is a plant in the orchid family, discovered in the spring of 1928 in the wheatbelt of Western Australia.

It was discovered in 1928 by a farmer after he noticed a sweet smell coming from the ground. The discovery generated such excitement that a wax model was toured around the British Isles.

The white leafless plant is made up of a fleshy underground storage stem (or tuber), which produces flower head consisting of around 150 tightly packed, tiny flowers.

The Western Australian underground orchid remains completely underground for it's whole life.

This particular orchid is a myco-heterotroph as it relies completely on the broom honeymyrtle and fungus for it's nutrients and carbon dioxide.

A woman spent hours helping to look for a missing person. They were looking for her!

A woman spent hours helping to look for a missing person. They were looking for her!

You probably did a double take when you read this headline, but it's true.

A tourist in Iceland participated in an extensive 50-person search for a missing woman, only to realize the person she was looking for was HERSELF! Here's what happened.

Last Saturday, a tour bus made a stop in Iceland's popular Eldja Volcanic region. The woman stepped out, and changed clothes and freshened up before getting back on.

Neither the bus driver nor any other passenger recognized her in the new clothes. The bus driver eventually reported the woman as missing.

The bus driver then presumably asked people to help find the woman, and she participated in the 50-person search without realizing the bus driver was talking about her!

After an hour of looking, the driver turned the search over to the police. After a few hours, she realized that she was the person they were looking for and set the story straight. Awkward.

Word/Puzzle Game of the Year 2013 Runner-Up: Device 6

Pocket Tactics

Is Device 6 a puzzle game? When I reviewed it in November, I tagged it as “interactive fiction”, which in hindsight seems lazy. Simogo's game packs in quite a lot of reading, but it's not a choose-your-own-adventure gamebook. Indeed — that's the whole ...
