Orville Redenbacher hired an consultant to name his popcorn. $13,000 later, the consultant suggested Orville’s own name!

Orville Redenbacher was an American businessman most often associated with the brand of popcorn that bears his name.

He started his career selling fertilizer, but spent his spare time working with popcorn. In 1951, he and partner Charlie Bowman bought the George F. Chester and Son seed corn plant near Valparaiso, Indiana.

Naming the company "Chester Hybrids," they tried tens of thousands of hybrid strains of popcorn before settling on a hybrid they named "RedBow."

An advertising agency, however, advised them to use "Orville Redenbacher" as the brand name, advice that cost Redenbacher $13,000!

Back then 13,000 dollars was a lot of money! Maybe we should all start our own advertising agency, maybe we’ll get a break with someone like Orville someday.

Only certain animals recognize themselves when they see their reflection on a mirror!

Only certain animals recognize themselves when they see their reflection on a mirror!

Most animals don’t recognize themselves when they look at a mirror!

Few animals have passed the mirror test. Most animals are unable to recognize themselves in the mirror. Among those that pass the test are humans, apes, orcas, dolphins, and elephants.

It would be interesting to see them perform the test on orcas and dolphins in water.

Pigs can use information seen in the mirror but are unable to recognize themselves. Pigeons can be trained to recognize themselves and use the mirror to see more things. Capuchin monkeys, however, are incapable of spontaneously recognizing themselves.

As for us, we don’t only recognize ourselves; humans also use this ability to take as many duck face pictures to post them on Facebook as possible.

Yao Ming is an ambassador for elephant conservation!

Yao Ming is an ambassador for elephant conservation!

Africans look at elephants much as Chinese look at Yao Ming, their 7’6" giant basketball star. They see power and majesty as well as gentleness and decency.

That would make Mr. Yao an ideal ambassador for elephant conservationists hoping to convince the Chinese public not to buy trinkets made from African ivory and thereby to deprive poachers of demand for bloodstained tusks.

To the conservationists’ great relief, Mr. Yao has accepted the job. He is the face of an ambitious new campaign aimed at affluent Chinese which seeks to generate interest in African wildlife—in it's natural habitat rather than as carved mementoes on living-room shelves.

Hopefully Mr. Yao will do an excellent job!

Actor John Larroquette was once paid in POT for his role in a movie!

Actor John Larroquette was once paid in POT for his role in a movie!

John Larroquette is an American film, television and stage actor.

His roles include Dan Fielding on the 1984-1992 sitcom Night Court, Mike McBride in the Hallmark Channel series McBride, John Hemingway on The John Larroquette Show, Lionel Tribbey on The West Wing and Carl Sack in Boston Legal.

He has won several awards, including four consecutive Emmy Awards for his role in Night Court. His first 'job' in Hollywood was providing the opening voiceover narration for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). Larroquette did this as a favor for the film's director Tobe Hooper.

However, the director insisted on paying him somehow, so he did the voiceover narration in exchange for pot in the end.

An Archimime is an Ancient Roman jester that would do impressions of dead people at their funerals!

An Archimime is an Ancient Roman jester that would do impressions of dead people at their funerals!

Ancient Rome had some odd traditions. Gladiators, terrorizing emperors, etc. One of the oddest may be that of the archimime.

As the last part of their name suggests, archimimes engaged in a kind of miming, but not the funny, white-faced French one we're used to today.

In ancient Rome, archimimes were the main court jester. They would imitate the mannerisms of both the living and the dead to the great amusement of their fellow Roman citizens.

In the beginning, they only performed in the theater. Later, they were invited to mime at feasts, and finally funerals.

Funerals? They may not seem like the place for a funny performance. Apparently, the Romans didn't agree. During funerals, an archimime would walk behind the deceased and imitate them as if they were still alive.

There’s a banned episode of Pokémon where Misty enters a bikini competition!

There’s a banned episode of Pokémon where Misty enters a bikini competition!

There is a Pokémon episode that did not air because of the appearance of boobs!

Like any anime, we get boobs and Team Rocket’s Jessie always provided that for us. However, it one episode, it was James that caused an episode to be banned.

There was a bikini contest held in the episode, and James, cross dressing like always, had fake boob, boobs that he could inflate and make bigger.

Can’t lie though, if you had no idea what show it was, or who James is, he looks like a normal woman.

The episode later aired as a “lost episode” but took out the whole bikini contest. Another “boob” controversy was a Pokémon card titled “Misty’s Tears.”

The Japanese image of the card showed a naked Misty holding her Staryu. We get a little side boob and the parents goes nuts. The U.S. Version of the card changed the image and parents were happy.

All beer drunk in The Hobbit movies was custom made by New Zealand brewers!

All beer drunk in The Hobbit movies was custom made by New Zealand brewers!

Beer plays a central role in the beginning of The Hobbit. Balin, the second dwarf to arrive at Mr Baggins' hobbit-hole, declines Bilbo's offer of tea, saying: "A little beer would suit me better".

As more dwarfs come through the perfectly round green door, "some called for ale and some for porter", although the great wizard, Gandalf, takes only a little red wine. Fortunately, Bag End has cellars for storing beer barrels, as well as numerous pantries for bread and pies.

The beer drunk during the filming of the Hobbit was custom made by New Zealand brewers. It was a 1% dark stout called "Sobering Thought".

It seems this beer is tasty and it might be worth it to try it out on your next visit at New Zealand!
