Today's Daily Brain Teaser (Aug 15, 2013)

The Captive Assassin

Listo, the leader of a band of assassins, was taken captive by an opposing kingdom. "Give your daggers," said one of the generals, "Or you are to be executed. But since you killed so many of our knights, we shall give you a small test. You must say a statement. If the statement is true, we burn you on a stake. If the sentence is false, we stab you through the heart. If you do not say anything, you are thrown to the lions. If you say something we can't verify, you will be forced to drink a cup of hemlock. If it is not a statement or if it is a paradox, we simply toss you into the nearby volcano. We shall give you one hour to ponder."

What should Listo say?

Creativity : Icebreaker: Name Game

Icebreakers are little exercises that help relax tension and loosen up a formal atmosphere in a meeting where you want to have creative ideas and group participation.

Here is one to try at your next meeting:

Sit in a circle and pick one person to start. This person should say their name and a one-word description about themselves that starts with the first letter of their name. For example: "Juggling Jake." Going clockwise, the next person would repeat this and add their own information: "Juggling Jake, Golfing George." Continue around the circle until everyone has participated. Not only does this icebreaker introduce everyone to everyone else, but it also tells you a little about each person.

Memory : Why Mnemonics Work

Mnemonic systems such as Link or Loci help us remember information for a variety of reasons.

1. They make the material more meaningful by adding associations and creating patterns. In fact, mnemonics work better for material that is less meaningful.

2. They help organize the information so that you can more easily retrieve it later. By giving you associations and cues, mnemonics allow you to cross-reference the information in different parts of your memory. This mental structure is very useful for material that has very little inherent organization.

3. Mnemonics typically involve visualizations that help make the facts more vivid. This is especially helpful for people who are visual learners. Additionally, these visualizations help focus your attention on the material by making the learning more fun.

Japanese Arcade Apparently Bans Smartphone Games

Kotaku

It has puzzles and, well, dragons. The sign also reads that those with manners don't bring food they've purchased elsewhere into restaurants. So, playing smartphone games in an arcade is kind of like bringing a fast food burger into a seafood restaurant?
