Stress : When Something is Going Wrong

When something is already going wrong, worrying about it reduces our ability to concentrate on the task at hand. This causes the situation to get worse. When we are worried, our mind jumps all over the place and we lose the ability to make good decisions. We can only improve a bad situation if we can focus 100% of our attention on the task, which means not worrying about the outcome. Here are some steps you can take to do this.

Determine the Worst-Case Scenario

Knowing the worst possible outcome will help put things in perspective. Are you going make your boss disappointed or lose your job? Are you going to get a B- on a project or flunk out of school?

Accept It

Once you have determined the worst-case scenario, you need to mentally accept it. Assume that it is going to happen. If you are resigned to the fact that the worst outcome is going to come true, then you can stop worrying about that possibility. After you accept the situation, you can move on to the next step.

Improve the Worst-Case Scenario

Now that you are free from worrying about the outcome, you can devote your full attention toward improving it. Try to find ways to reduce the negative effects of the outcome. You may not be able to turn a losing situation into a winning situation, but you might be able to make it neutral or at the very least, less bad.

Memory : External Aids

External aids are things like notebooks, PDAs, lists, alarms and strings around your finger. Some external aids (like notebooks) are intended to remind you of what to remember. These are very effective because your notebook cannot forget. As long as you remember where your notebook is kept, you will always have a backup of information contained in it to refresh your unreliable memory. These types of external aids are particularly useful when you are very busy, easily distracted or don't have time to properly learn the material. In these situations, an external aid acts like temporary storage until you can get the information into your head.

External aids can take other useful forms. For example, you may place the movie rental near the door as a reminder to return it to the store. If you think of something as you are falling asleep, you can put something out of place to remember it in the morning. You can tie a string around your finger to remind you to do something. These types of aids only remind you that there is something to remember. Usually, this is enough to jog your memory. If you can't remember why a string is around your finger, then you might need to use the first type of external aid.

If having a string around your finger is too annoying, you can try putting other things out of place. You could put a rubber band around your wrist, move a ring to a different finger, put your watch on the other wrist, put your wallet in a different pocket, etc. You can even use multiple simultaneous aids to remember multiple things. For example, your wallet in the wrong pocket could be a reminder to go to the bank and a ring on the wrong finger could be a reminder to pay your bills.

Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Tyro

noun :: A beginner in something.

Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing used to act like a lunatic to heal people. Sounds crazy, but wait 'till you see the results.

Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing used to act like a lunatic to heal people. Sounds crazy, but wait 'till you see the results.

R.D. Laing was a famous Scottish psychiatrist, most famous for his approach to treating his patients as sane people reacting to an insane world. In some cases, Laing believed that in order for a psychiatrist to understand his patients—he must empathize with them, and act as they do.

In one bizarre scenario, in order to understand his patient, R.D. Laing took off all his clothes, and sat on the floor next to a naked schizophrenic woman who was rocking back in forth. Laing started to mimic the woman, rocking in the same rhythm as her - and he didn't stop until she spoke. What makes this story so incredible, is that it was the first time she had uttered a single word in over 9 months!

R.D. Laing paved the way for humane treatment of mental illness patients, and his legacy is forever etched in stone. However, those who knew him personally, such as his friends and family, have a much different story to tell about him—one of alcoholism and neglect.

In certain Super Mario games, Mario can swim through lava! Do you know which ones?

In certain Super Mario games, Mario can swim through lava! Do you know which ones?

Mario and Luigi have saved the mushroom kingdom over and over again, yet their games never seem to bore the average person. Perhaps it's because of the legacy that great games such as Super Mario Bros 3 left behind that people feel nostalgic and kiddish when playing the games of the franchise. However, Super Mario Bros 3 left behind a number of 'legacies' that most people don't know about! Here are some examples.

After 47 lunges at Mario, the chains of the Chomps will begin to flash. On the 50th lunge, the Chain Chomp will break free and attack Mario! Don't hang around too long taunting those massive creatures!

In one of the Mario levels, the second stage in World 8 to be exact, Mario can successfully swim in the lava without losing a life! With enough practice and patience, you can have Mario swim under all the ships until he reaches the end of the level!

Scientists can turn stem cells into bacon! You won't believe how it's done.

Scientists can turn stem cells into bacon! You won't believe how it's done.

If anyone deserves a Nobel Prize this year, it's the scientists that have been able to create bacon strips from the stem cells of pigs. Bacon, the most beautiful food in the history of man kind, may now be readily available from green alternative to raising livestock and slaughtering delicious animals!

The Dutch scientists behind the great bacon discovery admit while the texture is a little off, the flavoring is spot on. With the ability to grow bacon in a laboratory, millions of people around the world without access to food may soon be able to enjoy the deliciousness that is bacon. Who knows, perhaps bacon in a test tube will be the solution to world hunger!

The Dutch scientists explain that "If we took the stem cells from one pig and multiplied it by a factor of a million, we would need one million fewer pigs to get the same amount of meat," This food experiment should remind you of the recent test where scientists were able to grow a hamburger in a laboratory.

But the question still remains - would vegetarians eat the stem cell bacon?

An Australian ex-prime minister held the world-speed record for beer drinking! Guess what that did for his political career.

Bob Hawke is an Australian politician who was the 23rd Prime Minister of Australia and the Leader of the Labor Party from 1983 to 1991.

Besides their nature, if there is something Australians really love is beer. If you are down into the beer culture you’ll be able to make new acquaintances around the country.

Ex-Prime Minister of Australia Bob Hawke once held the world-speed record for beer drinking. In his memoirs he suggested that this single feat may have contributed to his political success more than any other by endearing him to a voting population with a strong beer culture.

He drank a yard in less than 11 seconds!

A man was nominated for the Nobel Prize 35 times, but he never won!

The old adage "it was just an honor to be nominated" probably wore out for Gilbert N. Lewis at some point. Lewis was an American physical chemist and was known for his discovery of the covalent bond, the Lewis dot structure, and his concept of electron pairs, among other discoveries.

He attended Harvard University and studied abroad in Germany and the Phillipines. Lewis then went to teach at the University of California, Berkeley and remained there for the rest of his life.

Though he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 35 times, he never won. In 1946, he was found dead in his Berkeley laboratory. While he had been working with hydrogen cyanide, many believe his death was a suicide.

The Mercedes-Benz logo has a secret meaning!

The Mercedes-Benz logo has a secret meaning!

Car logos are meant to be memorable, visually appealing and some even mean something. The Mercedes-Benz logo is one of those meaningful ones. In 1926, Emil Jellinek, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz founded what would become one of the world's foremost luxury car companies.

The logo is a three-pronged star meant to symbolize universal motorization. The three prongs stand for land, water and air. The Mercedes-Benz name comes from Jellinek's daughters name, Mercedes, and Carl's last name, Benz.
