In order to land safely, a pilot had to shoot his own fuel tank!

LCol. A.J. D’Amariotook his plane to Korea in 1952. Immediately after takeoff, he felt that something was not right with his plane.

Afraid it might fall off and rupture during landing, potentially melting asphalt on the runway, the tower wouldn’t let him land with a full tank.

He was not able to get rid of the tank by moving switches and not even manually, so he decided to shoot his tank in order to create holes that would help his fuel go out. Luckily, he did not set up his tank on fire and was able to land safely.
