Vocabulary : Word of the Day : Bromide

bro-mide

noun :: A person who is conventional and commonplace in his habits of thought and conversation.

"She was so used to hearing Sellers lash the Philistine and hold forth on unappreciated merit that she could hardly believe the miracle when, in answer to a sympathetic bromide on the popular lack of taste in Art, Beverley replied that, as far as he was concerned, the public showed strong good sense." --Wodehouse, Pelham Grenville

Creativity : One Word Problem Statement

We discussed how to get new ideas by morphing your problem statement. Here is a related exercise to help you find new ways of looking at a problem.

Take your concise problem statement and reduce it to one word. For example "How can I hire qualified employees?" might be shortened to "hiring." What other words can be used? Is there a better word that expresses what you are trying to convey? Now, make a list of all the words that pop into your head in association with this word. Aim for at least 20 different associations. Do you see any patterns? Explore the patterns and ideas that come from this exercise and then re-write your problem statement.

Memory : Long Term Memory

Long-term memory differs from Short-Term Memory in several ways. From a practical point of view, it is mostly permanent and has an almost unlimited capacity. The recollection of childhood memories through hypnosis or other methods shows the permanence and large capacity of long-term memory. Additionally, it cannot be disrupted by things that can affect short-term memory. From a biological point of view, each type of memory has a different nerve chemistry and is affected differently by various drugs and diseases.

There are three types of long-term memory. The first is called "Procedural Memory." This is how you remember skills such as riding a bike or dialing a phone. The second type of memory is called "Semantic Memory." It helps you remember facts such as the color of your hair or your mother's name. The last type of memory is called "Episodic Memory." This kind is how you remember personal memories such as your last birthday party.

Each type of memory can benefit from different memory techniques. Most students are interested in improving and using their semantic memory. Elderly people are frequently more interested in their episodic memories and babies are very active in using their procedural memories.

Canopus-amps. sazh katzroy’s upgraded guns from the video game final fantasy XIII, so I’ve been told.

I have never played the game or any in the series. It took about three months of research just to find some pictures and get the size right. The client had a grainy pic from within the game and I found a pic of a to-scale toy sold in Japan with the guns by his size 12 boots. They are for a cos-play event (if you are young enough to still play video games but are too old for Halloween) (not to be taken as mean) Lucky for me the guns in the game are made of wood. People spend anywhere from $500 – $1,500 on costumes but use spray painted Nerf guns and cardboard swords, which is odd but so is everything else.

Made from oak, oak ply, poplar and various swear words with ebony wood filler from Minwax . the pic with the pink background is the final sketch-up , without this free program I would have lost money, hair and a lot of time on this, instead I just lost hair. Have never had a client so happy before

Mustang Box

Mustang Box

This was one of my first scroll saw projects. I just cut the front mustang out of the same piece so it is more like a puzzle piece than an inlay. I made this from just some scrap hardboard that was around. The rough surface of the hardboard makes for a neat texture on the inside. The picture and the harsh flash doesn’t really do it justice.
